Hydrotherapy tubs at the infamous Greystone Psych Ward.
They used this kind of hydrotherapy mostly during the 30s and 40s (During the 50s, psychotropic medication was introduced, so the practice of hydrotherapy as straight-jacket fizzled out).
Supposedly, dropping patients in 45 degree water calmed them down. Apparently, it did help, at the expense of the comfort of the patient. It was most useful in cases of mania, or manic psychosis. The treatment consisted of a series of baths that brought the patient a little bit too close to hypothermia for comfort with continuous running water.
Actress Frances Farmer underwent this kind of therapy. She said it worked, but she called it "an icy hell". You can read all about it in her autobiography "Will There Really Be a Morning?"
