gosh ive been reading all of shuzo oshimi manga and almost all his work SCREAMS trans woman. He isn't out publicly that I can find but I hope in his private life he's at least looked into the idea of being transgender

I feel so bad for Oshimi. LGBT rights and acceptance have a long way to go in Japan. It's so obvious that he's stuck repressing in the closet. It underlines almost all of his work.

There's this abject fascination with the trans experience in otaku culture -- countless stories in manga and anime where characters are shown struggling with gender ennui, so much so that it's a well-established character archetype and trope, even a whole ass genre. But the dominant cultural understanding of the topic is that this type of person is just a confused gay man. As such, many of those stories feature just that: Warped, duplicitous depictions where a character expresses all the conflict and self-discovery of gender dysphoria in painful detail, only to end up accepting that they're a man.

When you peel back the layers you start to see why such "otokonoko" "femboy" characters are so popular among western transphobic audiences despite depicting stories that are so relatable to trans people themselves.
