Legit starting to wonder if like... i come across as less calm/neutral than I do on my head because I feel like im saying normal things but some people are having weird reactions to stuff i say.
So like... i have that psychosis thing sometimes and I wonder if like... in my head everything is calm and rational but maybe im actually screaming obscenities or something.
Like yesterday a lady complained that the bridge needed services and I told her that that was the services department and she should submit a complaint to the website and she got mad at me because she thought since it was a bike trail it was parks and like...
... what if I accidentally screamed 'thats not my fucking job' or something.
I mean you can record yourself? I know that helps people who have visual hallucinations. Like they hold up a phone to see if the thing they see us actually there
I could start doing that. I mean, I thought i was really calm in the video I recorded of that one heckler at pride, but i also didnt show it to anyone.
But it also happens in written stuff too like... i feel like my tone is getting interpreted as insulting a lot and it could be that people are just haters, but sometimes I wonder, you know?
A friend of mine told me the other day that they’ve started doing “tone checks” with their partner, like if you aren’t sure if your partner is Using A Tone you can ask for a tone check and they can clarify if they meant for there to be a tone, or if they thought they were coming off as neutral. It’s helped them reduce tone-based misunderstandings by a lot!
They didn’t mention if they used it for texting or not, but it seems like it could be useful there as well.
Alas that doesn’t help with people complaining to you at work, or strangers online, but may be helpful with personal relationships! And possibly over time it can give you data points on how people are hearing your tone.
I do have tone checks when im writing like... important emails. I dunno. I think i just end up talking to a bunch of entitled people or something
Ok so I have been told that I sound super angry and pissed off all my life. I have also been told by mental health professionals that I have a naturally flat affect in speaking
I do on a daily basis modulate my tone to be more "energetic" and "upbeat" because I get better reactions when I do. It's also fucking exhausting
So I reach points where I just can't do that anymore and revert to my normal tone. And even my husband tenses up when I start until I say "I'm not mad, I'm just not masking"
So I actually recorded just the audio of myself speaking. Just speaking to myself and I finally heard it
When I am flat affect I sound so very angry and fed up with everything
And now that I can hear it I can account for it when speaking and either mask (with strangers) or just say "I'm flat affect not angry"
I call it resting bitch voice
So I don't know if that's your issue but that's what I got going on and it may be relevant
