most surprising things I've ended up doing ever since moving into my apartment with a little yard:

- digging out a small drain so that the water coming out of the gutter flows further into the yard and not directly onto my lawn, turning it into a green, stinky moss field

- stabbing the ground with a pitchfork and spreading sand into the little holes so that the dirt absorbs water better and allows my plants and grass to grow

- i don't mow the lawn myself (housing management pays for it) but since it's such a small area I've crawled on the ground with long gardening scissors and cut the overgrown grass

- understanding why dads care so much about their lawns

- I don't mind other plants growing among the lawn but I don't like fleaworts. I've, again, crawled on my hands and knees digging them out

- another weed I have a problem with is raspberry that keeps trying to grow absolutely everywhere. its roots have taken over the yard. I did not think a plant could make me this angry

- the yard has shrubs for fencing and within the shrubs lives a nasty-looking phallic-shaped mushroom that smells horrible. research has proven it to be a species of stinkhorn that is rare in finland. I did not think a mushroom could make me this angry

again a lesson about betraying your own boundaries: my apartment has a terrace and a little yard and I've made friends with my neighours in the apartment next to mine, an older gent and especially his 20-year old son. almost every night when I let my dog out in the evening the son wants to hang out with me. his voice is a little loud and I've been too polite to shush him. he also doesn't understand social cues so well so when I try to say that I should be heading inside he often keeps chatting with me. now I got a noise warning from the property manager and I'm mighty embarrassed. who's been a despicable little people pleaser again
