General Guidelines: Only previously unpublished works will be considered for publication. Submissions should be complete, standalone pieces and not part of a larger work. Entries should incorporate the current theme; the integration of the theme is open to author interpretation. Submissions containing hate speech, racism, sexism or homophobia will be rejected as they do not align with the principles the Chicken Scratch creative team endorses. All literary submissions should be sent as an attachment in the .doc or .docx format. Art and photography submissions should be sent as a web sized attachment in the .jpg format.
Submissions offered without all requested information or after the given deadline will not be considered for publication. Please see below for specific guidelines pertaining to each genre. Fiction Guidelines: Fiction submissions should be between 1,500 words and 5,000 words in length. Authors are welcome to submit up to two pieces per issues with the knowledge that only one piece, per individual, per category will be selected for publication in a given issue. Non-Fiction: The non-fiction category is open to personal essays, short memoirs, reportage pieces, interviews, and critiques. Feature submissions should be between 1,000 and 4,000 words; shorter submissions between 400 and 800 words. Individuals are welcome to submit one feature piece or up to two shorter submissions with the knowledge that only one piece, per individual, per category will be selected for publication in a given issue. Poetry: No single poem should be longer than 125 lines. Poems should present a unique voice and perspective, in any style the poet sees fit. Poets are welcome to submit up to five poems, with the knowledge that more than one poem by the same poet will only be published in extremely rare cases. Art and Photography Submissions: We welcome all types of visual art for submission. Submissions should be tied to the issue’s central theme. Up to 10 pieces per artists will be accepted. Each submission should include the following information for each provided image.
The name of the piece
Why you feel it fits our current theme
A link to your online portfolio (if available)
Affirmation that you can supply a high resolution file (300dpi, at least 12 inches on the shortest side) if your piece(s) is selected for publication
About
Chicken Scratch is a quarterly literary magazine with a cursive edge. Inspired by the giddy feeling literary people get every time they stumble across or successfully seek out something in their favorite author’s handwriting, Chicken Scratch aims to embrace and inspire said euphoria by incorporating each author’s penmanship into their literary pieces.
