this one was wheel thrown for me by one of my studio friends, I really love the shape she made

the grass is all overpainted originally, but once it goes through the kiln, the black hides any underglaze on top of it, and only the carved lines remain green

painting with underglaze is similar to using acrylic paint, but they definitely have their own set of rules too

like acrylics

1. you can mix them to get different colours

2. you can apply them with pretty much any tool you can think of; brushes, stamps, sponges, textured things, whatever

3. they dry quickly

4. you can thin them with water to make a wash

unlike acrylics

1. they require exactly three coats or they’re likely to bubble or be streaky

2. the colour on top may not necessarily remain—darker underglazes can devour any lighter colours sitting on top

3. the colour they look when they’re applied might change dramatically in the finished piece

4. they easily wash out of most fabric and don’t stain canvas

5. used brushes can be left out and it won’t wreck them, because underglaze will always dissolve in water

6. old, dried-out underglazes are always able to be resaturated so don’t toss them

“Silflay hraka u embleer rah” is like, incredibly multilayered. It’s great.

The quick translation really is essentially “Eat shit you stinking leader,” but let’s break it down.

“Silflay” is a rabbit term for a specific kind of eating - it’s when you go outside the burrow to graze. It’s a social event, a meal with the rest of the warren.

“Hraka” means “excrement” but it seems to contextually mean, specifically, “final excrement.” Rabbit digestion requires them to poop once and then eat that poop to get the rest of their nutrients out of it, a different means of solving the problem of digesting grass than a ruminant’s four-chambered stomach. This is what “chewing pellets” refers to in the text, by the way. So the first poop is just pellets and should be eaten, but the second poop is hraka and should be left alone.

“Embleer” is loosely translated as “stinking,” but it’s specifically the scent of a fox, one of rabbitkind’s great enemies.

And finally “Rah” is an honourific suffix indicating the warren’s Chief Rabbit.

So! A possible alternate translation might be:

“Eat the shit you’re not supposed to eat, you king of fox stink, and make a meal of it!” Possibly with connotations of “If you’re eating hraka you are maybe not that bright if you can’t distinguish it from pellets.”
