May the tropes be ever in your favor ii.

Tropeapalooza is back for another year! Just in case you missed year one –Tropeapalooza is a community bolstering challenge. It is intended to foster engagement and/or creation from readers, writers, artists, DJs, podficers, etc. It is based on the premise that our community is stronger when all content (new & old, concise & sprawling, etc.) is celebrated and elevated. All were AND are invited to participate in all mediums.

Last year mutual pining emerged victorious, but over the course of the challenge thousands of pieces of content (fic, art, playlist, podfics, trope-based cheese pairings, etc. were created and/or shared). Check out Tropeapalooza 2020 –> X.

So…. once again let’s put the tropes to the test, to see which is best… Starting this July 19th (and lasting over a week) our favorite tropes will be pitted against each other once again. Sixteen tropes will duke it out, only one will survive.

Wallace perks up with a sly grin and nudges Meg. “Not sure who wins weirdest foreplay, these two or our two idiots.” Mac and Corny overhear and the four of them cackle, much to the displeasure of the other three conscious members in the area.

Shared trauma is like a magpie, mimicking the call of something that sounds similar to love. As Hogwarts rebuilt, Hermione sought refuge in The Burrow, keeping a room with Ginny, counting the days until she could return to school. It was a place to hide. A shelter where sorrow was accepted as the norm. During the summer, she would often walk with Ron, quietly, as if not to disturb his grief, all the while wishing she could discuss a book or a spell or a newspaper article with him, anything that would keep her brain busy to distract from her own pain. It was in these quiet moments that she fully realized that Ron was not a boy of words. The awareness that her imaginary musings of a life together would not contain her ideal daydream of two partners -- sharing tea, while discussing the latest translation of Cornelius Agrippa’s masterworks from the original German -- just added to her melancholy. But she carried on.

A snippet from Resilience

A scant few meters away, the werewolf cocked his head and tilted it back, inhaling deeply. Harry turned to her, eyes wide with the same fear that froze her in place. They couldn’t hear what was being said, but it was clear that Greyback could sense them, smell them if Hermione had to guess. He’d be able to pinpoint precisely where they stood.

A few more cracks of apparition could be heard deeper in the woods, but Hermione’s attention was drawn to the figure emerging from the shadows. Where Greyback was large and hulking this person was tall, lithe, and almost graceful, clad in the dark robes and silver mask of a Death Eater. He joined Greyback at the edge of their hasty protections, turned toward them, and the air shivered with familiar magic. She frowned at the recognition. He turned to Greyback and shook his head.  

Hermione took in the appearance of the Death Eater. She reached for the residual magic floating through the air, let it swirl around her. The stirring sensation felt so familiar, but the context was wrong. It couldn’t be—

Draco heard her huff with indignation. “Oh, honestly! You have no idea what kind of pressure I’m under, trying to keep my marks up whilst also keeping you and Ronald safe from yourselves. And to be quite frank, it’s times like this where I wonder why I even bother with that!” 

 She pushed past him as she stomped away, knocking him into Theo, who had managed to catch up to him while he was distracted by Potter and Granger, as she headed up the stairs. He watched her disappear around the corner, hair wildly whipping around behind her. She had no bloody clue what real pressure felt like. 

 He was positive no one ever would.

Just a Peek- All I Want Is You

She smiled with a nod, and a rush of warmth climbed up his spine and down deep into his belly again. “Well- ah- okay. I’ll see you tomorrow night, then.” Breath quickening with the realization of not wanting to leave her. Images of taking the step closer, threading fingers into her hair and kissing her. Working their way to the wall and pressing Veronica against it while he kissed her breathlessly flooded through his mind. Breath hitching, eyes widening, ‘What the hell is wrong with me?’ Stuffing his hands into his pocket before he did something stupid, he wondered if he could kiss her cheek… friends did that. I mean, he kissed Lilly’s cheek. Veronica’s cheek looked so soft and smooth, he wondered what it would feel like to brush his lips against it. ‘Okay, maybe we shouldn’t do that.’ Heart racing, head spinning, Logan realized he needed to leave. Needed to figure out what the hell was going on.

“Tell me more about you.”

“No,” she giggled.  “We agreed.”

“But you get to see my home, my life…”  Logan’s fingers traced down her spine as she lay on her stomach in the middle of his bed, drying from their shower in the warm light of an afternoon sunbeam streaming through his window.

“My life is dull.  It’s boring,” Veronica mused, her skin turning to goosebumps as his fingers reached her buttocks and retreated.  “You are not.”

“How could someone as beautiful as you have a boring life?”

“Okay.  Fine.  You got me.  I work for the CIA.  Now I have to kill you.” Her laugh was husky like an exaggerated character in a bad play.

“I can think of a few fun ways you could attempt to suffocate me….”

With that, Logan slid closer to her, their lips connecting again, hungry for more of whatever she was willing to give him.

Nish waved off her concerns, crammed behind the desk, and tried to lean back but bumped the wall.

“Come on. Do you even know him? It can’t be that bad.”

No, but she didn’t need to. His reputation as a frat boy who only cared about hockey and sex was well known. And she wasn’t going to waste her precious time. She shook her head and glared.

Six Sentence Sunday

Soulmates. The world runs on them, you know? From politicians to media to your local corner store. Everybody needs a soulmate. And if you can’t find yours well, maybe you can buy one. Enough money will get you anything in this world. 

And that’s where we come in. We try to keep it professional. Try to keep it honest. But we weren’t meant for this business. Investigating, digging up secrets, turning up long-dead scandals… that’s the work we’re meant for. But no one wants the skeletons in the closet, so here we are:

“It’s $300 an hour plus expenses. We guarantee results by the end of the week.”

“You’ll find him? My soulmate?”

“We always do.”

And away they go, thinking somehow having a soulmate will solve all their problems. Thinking that someone else can turn their life around. Thinking that “soulmate” means forever. God, it makes me want to puke.
