Begin!
Ok, making Chillertale sprites is a real pain in the butt, so now I'm working on a different AU.
So, I have the sprite done for Papyrus, but the background is taking longer than expected. Turns out making a full outdoor scene is a lot harder than a small corridor. Who knew?
Guess whose battle sprite is next!
Crypttale GUI
Crypttale Sans's sprites
An even better version of my previous sprite art. Been meaning to post this up here for awhile
A pic of what the finished sprite would look like. Still working on all the chest animations.
I made a new sprite sheet for the head of sans. It contains optional animations, and the sweat is there, but it has a transparent background because Iām planning on adding a bulging vein animation for one of the faces.
I had also made a base sprite for the chest and torso, but the program i was using crashed and I had to start all over. So Iāll just be rebuilding sans one bodypart at a time.
Name Change!
I was struck by inspiration today, and thought of a name that more effectively conveys what my AU is. So, from this point forwards, the AU will now be called Undertomb. The reason for this is because i was trying to give the AU a style more similar to one of those old dungeon crawler games. So unfortunately that means I'll have to start over with the battle sprites I've been working on, as this AU would use a different artstyke than undertale. And those new battle sprites will take longer to make as I'll have to make them from scratch. I'll also be changing the synopsis of this AU to fit this new mental image. The good news is; now that I have a clear theme, I can start working in environments as well!
Edit: turns out Undertomb is taken. Along with tombtale, undercrypt, and dungeontale. So I'm going with the only name left: Crypttale.
inspired by old sci-fi movies and antique TV sets. has tank threads and lots of buttons and dials. there is a camera mounted on his head, and he uses B-9 style robot claws, with retractable accordian arms and everything. his monitor is black and white and has a lot of static. His voice box tends to glitch out a lot.
The former head royal scientist, Dr.Ā šš āāš§āāā¼ did numerous experimentsĀ on determination. He was convinced that he could extract the determination from human souls, and use that determination to force open the barrier. He attempted to breed with a human, the soul of Integrity, to be specific, to try and create a human-monster hybrid with enough power to destroy the barrier. However, the result was 1 ATK, 1 DEF, 1 HP Sans, so he considered the experiment a failure. His drive to break the barrier led to the creation of the CORE, a massive generator of power. Alas, his relentless pursuitĀ proved to be his downfall, as at the peak of his madness, he leapt into the core, and was scattered across time and space.
What Is Crypttale?
Undertomb is an Undertale AU where the game was styled after a windows 98 dungeon crawler instead of a JRPG. As a result, the Underground's inhabitants are more monstrous in their appearance and mannerisms, so the protagonist has to overcome their own fear responses in order to see the gentle souls beneath. I feel the main theme of Undertale is overcoming your own prejudice, so Undertomb takes this concept and amplifies it.
Much of the inspiration for character designs comes from stop motion or looking at pictures of actual animals, and I'm trying to go for a "'98 dungeon crawler" feel rather than Undertale's JRPG atmosphere, which should result in an interesting and unique visual style compared to other AUS.
Unlike other AUs, the characters don't change much in terms of personality. Any differences will most likely be caused by their physiology interfering in their ability to express themselves. For instance, Toriel's voice still resembles goat bleating, so she has trouble forming consonants.
Another difference from other "dark" AUs is that Flowey doesn't want to help the protagonist. He's the same manipulative little devel he is in the main game.
Now, there are a couple other, minor differences, that I'll adress here:
When you die and reload, you can see the blood you've spilled in past lives. Only you can see it.
All puzzles are now actually dangerous. Sans and Papyrus are 'trappers' instead of sentries, hunting wild animals when they aren't looking for Humans.
There will be more puzzles that behave like Sans' word search, only you can actually interact with them using your mouse. This is for the dungeon-crawler aesthetic. You can also use the mouse for other things in the game, such as inventory, and selecting buttons on the battle plane. The GUI is different as well, and you have a grid inventory.
inspired by the fangtooth fish (yes, thatās the actual name). Chillertaleās Undyne isnāt quite as talkative as her Undertale counterpart (due to the issue all monsters in this AU have with talking)
speaks inĀ chillerĀ instead ofĀ comic sans. may be named chiller instead of sans. so that the name for this AU seems more like something relevant to it rather than being the only name that wasnāt already taken. anyways: this sansā jawbone is fused to his skull. he also has a circulatory system. this is because heās half human.Ā gasterattempted to breed with patience to create more powerful souls that could break the barrier. unfortunately, that experiment was a failure, andĀ gasterĀ considered sans a failure as well.
Chiller!Toriel
Has a speech impediment where she has trouble transitioning between different sounds. Her voice also has a waver to it; like a bleating goat. Four fingered hoof hand concept by Russell Teller, check out his Deviantart profile if you like your anthros anatomically accurate
Flowey the Flower, as he appears in my new AU: Chillertale! His face works like a pinwall (look it up) of pollen. Inspired by sunflowers and the nomes from Return to Oz.
The Great Puss-In-Boots (Upon!Papyrus) Dreams of being a Black Knight, and comes up with many hair-brained schemes to achieve this dream. Rumpelstiltskin helps him out because, well, he's always game for mischief. Upon discovering the Human, Puss-In-Boots abandons his current scheme in favor of capturing the human.
