YOUNG ROYALS (S01E03)
I don’t want to be a sweetheart. I want to be the fucking love of your life.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (via quotemadness)
There's something beautiful about Simon devouring Wille in this scene. The boy was holding off all his love for Wille and trying to move on the entire season. He was heartbroken, betrayed and he did his best to break things off with Wilhelm.
This moment is him letting it all go, owning his feelings, showing how much he loves this guy. You can see how desperate and passionate he is. Wille is completely at his mercy.
Plus in s1 we see Wille worshiping Simon's body and it was clear how far gone he was for this boy. S2 shows how Simon's love for Wilhelm is just as intense and passionate as Wilhelm's love for him. And I think it's beautiful.
simon loving wille’s bad bitch era
Something I noticed while rewatching is that Marcus and Simon share so many kisses in public, at school, anywhere they want to and nobody does so much as look at them.
It's again so so very clear that the problem is not Wille and Simon being queer, the problem is Wille being a prince. It's actually so refreshing to see again that his sexuality is not really the main plot.
No but even on top of Omar's chef's kiss ✨ acting in this scene (the how-dare-u glare, the pause, the blatant lie, ughh the knowing SMILEE), its just so so well executed.
Right when Wille lets the audience know that he'd let Simon go, with genuine conviction, and complete acceptance in his heart, this scene comes along and sets the gears into motion.
It's a straight up prophesy, like fate personified, walking off into the dark fog of defeat and turning back, ever so slightly, with a smirk, right before disappearing. Like an "Or so you thought" right at the end of a chapter.
When Marcus threatened to cross the boundry of the mental space and memory where Simon kept Wille, something clicked within him. I like to think that in that pause, Simon learnt the truth about himself: that Wille was still there, in his heart. He had never really let him go. And that Marcus was nowhere near what Wille was to him.
"They don't have names" is such a fucking power move. It's the shutting of doors on Marcus' face, the proof of his loyalty to Wille. Unbeknownst to Marcus or Wille, and only to himself, this is the first time Simon stands his ground and speaks his mind truthfully without Marcus' manipulations. And he gets away with it flawlessly.
And man. Nothing gets to me like small subtle actions that hold so much weight and history. I mean look at his smile. He knows what he said.
What I love about Wille changing the script is that nobody can do anything about it. They need to support Wilhelm publicly. We see Jan-Olof trying to cut the cameras… but all the students have their phones up. Kristina can’t react more than her little open-mouth fish expression because if she does, it will be filmed. Jan-Olof can’t do more than ask people to turn their cameras off, to no avail. Malin can’t drag Wille away because let’s be honest, he would put a fight and everyone would see that and dragging him away for coming out would not pass.
By doing the speech live, Wille is making sure that not only can he say whatever he wants to say, but as long as they are in public the Royal Family has to be supportive of his decision. There are cameras everywhere, filming him and ready to film the Queen (and Jan-Olof since he is there). But right now, as we can see in the picture below, everyone is concentrated on Wille. They have to take this moment to regain their footing and look like they support him. They don’t have a choice.
If someone in the royal team was to look like they were against Wille, it will instantly be taken as if they kept Wille in the closet (which they did). However, with the way Wille phrased his coming out, he puts all the blame on himself. He lied because it was something personal to him that he didn’t want to share. With the way Wille phrases the lie, he wanted to protect himself and his moment. The blame isn’t out on the royal family at all (or it is if you listen to all of his talk about traditions, but he doesn’t outright say that they kept him in the closet, he puts himself to blame too for upholding traditions).
If the royal court is smart, they will publicly support their Crown Prince right then and there, and act as if they were only there to support when he wanted to come out himself. This is brilliant and I can’t wait to see how they will handle that in season 3 (give it to me or else🔪). For once, Wilhelm has the upper hand and they need to work around what he wants.
Something happened inside me. A huge and uncontrollable wave ran through me and crashed on the shore that was my heart.
Benjamin Alire Sáenz (via quotemadness)
The funny thing is, Wilhelm for all his anxiety, and insecurities and messy personal life and raw grief is actually the best man for the job. Being king, being a leader comes naturally for him. Because it's not about being arrogant and power drunk, it's not about pulling rank. It's about using the resources you have to your advantage.
He knew exactly how to persuade his schoolmates. He knew when and how to one up August, hit him where it hurts. He knew how to negotiate, with the queen herself mind, and knew when to accept what was given. He knew when to hold his ground and he knew when to let go. It's exactly where August goes wrong all the time because he has a giant savior complex. He has to be everybody's knight in shining armor.
This anxiety riddled boy got up on stage, in front of so many important people, in front of the queen, his mother, and managed to not only take back control of his narrative, but he did it completely impromptu. This boy who didn't even want to speak in front of his class changed his initiation speech midway because he knew he had to stand up for what he believed in. The fact that he has doubts and questions his abilities, if anything makes him uniquely qualified. Because if a 16 year old, royal or not, isn't a little phased by responsibilities that heavy, then they're not the man for the job.
He's grieving the death of his brother, dealing with almost zero parental support and a backstabbing cousin. And he's a goddamn teenager. He's doing better than most people would have. And I, for one, can't wait to see crown prince Wilhelm run the show in s3.
The writers better give us a third season 🔫
This. I feel like a lot of people likes the idea of an abdication trope which is understandable. But I would want to see Wille prove everyone wrong. I want him to show that he can be a king and a great leader. That he does not need to change for the position.
i think some other people have mentioned this but it's the way that when simon first follows wille during the ball this first thing he says is
"i'm just trying to move on"
but he says it in a way almost like he's hoping for some sort of argument? or maybe not an argument but like he originally sounds kind of helpless but pushing for SOMETHING from wille but wille just says "i can see that" in the way he does, and he concedes to simon again even though it looks like simon was hoping for a different response because that is when simon takes the second to breathe and figure out what he actually wants to say to wille
it's like he originally followed wille hoping to still feel like wille was fighting for them, but wille had already accepted the circumstances, thinking that's what simon wanted, and when simon realizes this he recognizes that he has to change tactics
anyways... valentines ball supremacy
The best supporting actor award for Young Royals goes to
👑Wilhelm's Desk👑
This desk has supported Wilhelm when he was having a breakdown. It supported Wilhelm when he was being dragged away. And it supported Wilhelm when he needed to pin down Simon so that he can eat his face. Top tier quality desk, I tell you. They need to let us know the brand. Who am I kidding, it's probably IKEA!
An early but epic scene that I never tire of re-watching is when Simon and Wille first lay eyes on each other after the school break in S2 and the pining goes offfff. For me there are four stages to it and I am so weak for each one.
STAGE ONE: THE SIGHTING
I think what I really like about the moment they first notice each other in the crowd is that Simon is so caught off guard (more so than Wille who probably suspected that wherever Sara was her brother would likely be nearby), so he doesn’t have time to hide his feelings – he just feels them. And noticeably so.
Like the heavy swallow as he stands frozen in place just staring at Wilhelm, clearly unable to process anything other than: Wille! And you know from that moment that Simon is still full of feelings for Wille if just the sight of him through a sea of bodies sends the rest of the world away and makes his heart race.
He even walks towards Wille instead of shutting the moment down. Since Wille’s an ex, it’s not like Simon has to talk to him or anything but still those legs of his move forward to close the gap and be near him even if no words can be exchanged…
STAGE TWO: THE HAIR CHANGE
Seeing Wille up close after Christmas break would have been a strange moment at first… Simon had been thinking of Wille all break by his own admission (and let’s be real, he even has that tabloid magazine of Wille that he probably looked through again in moments of weakness), so essentially Wille has never really strayed far from Simon’s mind. But the Wille in Simon’s mind would have been a different Wille – a static Wille frozen in time who looked a certain way and who could only really speak words of the past. Just a paler memory version of him.
But it is a very different experience being up close again with the real version of that person in your head – the real person who will move and talk in ways you can’t control in your mind; who now LOOKS different.
It’s a much more heady experience being in the presence of that real person who is just…so much MORE than your brain can ever conjure. Someone with a special intensity behind their gaze that is hard to replicate in your head; someone whose little mannerisms come out and add colour to their movement; someone whose smell of cologne or whatever hits you right in the biochemistry…
“I figured it would be easier to see him after the break, but it was just harder!”
Of course Simon, because Wille is more than a static memory; he is a living, breathing person whose proximity near you lights up all of your senses. Never underestimate the physiological response of being around the boy you like *sob*.
And yeh, not only is Simon having to deal with all of that when he hasn’t prepared himself for it at the party, but he has to process that Wille has physically changed from his memories; Wille is displaying a new version of himself that Simon is not yet familiar with.
And we know that Simon does notice Wille’s haircut (or at least allows himself a moment to examine it) when they get right up close to each other and Wille is distracted on his phone.
It is fascinating how Simon forces his eyes away after a moment, like shaking himself out of a funk, and then starts fidgeting through his emotions with the telltale sadness of a lowered gaze. It would be hard feeling things like longing while knowing how futile and unhelpful it is… And adding to his sadness would no doubt be the psychology of seeing someone who was once so familiar to him looking physically different but in a way that has nothing to do with him anymore.
As mild as a haircut/style change may seem, it would still make that person seem a bit more unfamiliar and inaccessible when you know you won’t be able to make memories with this version of them. It would rub it in for Simon, the reality of their moving apart.
(And yes! Like others have said, Simon might also be feeling a little sad that the shorter sides in Wille’s new hairstyle mean he can’t tuck his hair behind his ears anymore in that easy display of affection he used to instinctually like doing. Yet another physical reminder for Simon that their old memories and habits have to remain in the past now…)
STAGE THREE: THE CONFLICT IN SIMON
It’s tough seeing Simon so subdued in these moments, standing near Wille and struggling to get ahold of his yearning and sadness. But it’s also so interesting seeing one of the undercurrents of this season begin – Simon’s inner conflict between wanting to get over Wille and his subconscious fighting against the very idea.
Because the thing is, if Wille’s haircut is a reminder for Simon that they won’t be as familiar with each other moving forward, then that should be a helpful thing, right? Because that is indeed the reality Simon was psyching himself up for over break and now time is making tangible changes to compliment that reality. But Simon’s subconscious seems to be disquieted by this reminder. It’s a pattern that we see repeat itself over the season (like when Wille is forced to leave Hillerska – that is a situation that benefits Simon’s need to be away from him to properly move on, but instead it panics Simon into intervening to try and get Wille to stay).
This is the start of the excruciating conflict Simon has to bear every day this season of his warring heart and head.
STAGE FOUR: WILLE’S HELP
So in amongst all this longing and sadness that Simon is currently feeling as he stands beside Wille at the party, do you know what’s gotta suck? Having to then deal with all the emotions that come with said ex, whom you’ve been secretly pining for, being the one to help you find your sister when no one else could.
I mean, Wille may have a new look, but his classic pattern of trying to help Simon at Hillerska is going to feel familiar as heck to Simon. It would remind him just how nice it feels when Wille has his back at Hillerska instead of the days when he had to fight everything alone. And Wille’s help right now has come during a very stressful family situation! Since family is number one to Simon, that poor kid was never going to feel calm until he had everything under control. It means that receiving help for a situation so close to his heart would probably have had an added impact on him. So now Simon probably has to deal with feeling relieved and grateful towards Wille on top of everything.
(And all of this was before Wille even got to unleash his adorably awkward ‘I got a haircut!’ declaration, complete with self-conscious gesticulating and fidgeting. It would be pretty hard not to be affected by Wille’s earnest desperation to keep the conversation alive no matter how much of a dork it makes him appear.)
After those four stages, all I can say is… Er, yeh, good luck getting over Wille, Simon. That was totally going to be possible…. ;)
I want a moment like this again in YRS3. I want a moment that is sweet and tender and nostalgic.
I want Wille to tell Simon about Erik. About how Erik knew. About how Erik wanted Wille to come home that weekend that they planned on spending together. I want them to laugh about how Erik saw right through Wille's bad excuse of needing to study. I want Wille to tell Simon "You have met someone, those were his exact words." And I want Wille to tell Simon that he didn't tell Erik who he met but that he was right, he had met someone. And I want them to smile knowingly at each other. Because they had.
And I want Wille to tell Simon "He would've liked you". And I want Simon to say "I would've liked him too". That's what I want.
Young Royals : The importance of physical touch. [ P1 ]
Something I thought was so intense and important is the discussion of how Wille and Simon's relationship works, BASED on the language of physical touch.
I am a FIRM believer that both Wille AND Simon both have physical touch as their primary love language. While I agree that Simon is heavily into the words of affirmation as well, I stand by him relying on touch to display how he is feeling towards others.
Consensual Physical Touch
Something so VITAL to Wille and Simon is the agreement of touch between them, and how special that is.
Will you stay with me until I fall asleep again? [ Season 1 Episode 4 ]
This is one of my favorite moments to reference, it is a prime example of Simon expressing himself physically. He has just told Wille that he likes him as well, but in this moment, of him caressing his face and the gentle touch on his neck is when Wille really gets what Simon means, you can really see Wille react to what is actually going on. Yeah sure he SAID it but he's SHOWING it as well.
It's the way Simon is so expressive with his HANDS. If you can see what his hands are doing, odds are we know exactly how he is responding TRULY to what's going on.
Come visit me in Bjärstad sometime [ Season 1 Episode 5 ]
I almost feel like we shouldn't be here, like we shouldn't be allowed in this room with them because of how INTIMATE this moment is and how it's filmed.
Simon genuinely MELTS into Wille and his touch.
the look of consent between both of them, and how GENTLE each touch is PLUS the beautiful golden light?? ITS PERFECT.
They are genuinely so happy with each other, being in the same space. The fact that in this scene they hardly EVER break physical contact with each other speaks VOLUMES.
[shout-out to the intimacy coordinator because I cried during this one I can't lie.]
You're the only person here I can talk to.
[ Season 1 Episode 5 ]
This is one of the VERY FEW times we see Wille break down emotionally in front of Simon and really let his guard down. What is the way Simon responds? Physically. Getting up and embracing him regardless of how pissed at him he is and Wille all but basically pulls Simon into his chest cavity.
If he had just tried to console him verbally it wouldn't have had the same effect, and he knows that. It's important for Simon to respond not only in his love language but Wille's as well.
Again we see here Simon trying to ground Wille back down with very gentle calculated touch. The lack of space between them, the constant communication without speaking is VITAL to the relationship they have created.
Everything just got so messed up between us. [ Season 2 Episode 4 ]
The absolute TENSION between them in this moment is crazy, because they had not let each other get this close the entire beginning of this season because they knew if they did they really wouldn't be able to control themselves.
This is almost a test for them, to see if the other is still feeling the same. When Wille said he understands Simon doesn't love him anymore, that really set shit in motion.
They are CLINGING, CLAWING at each other almost like they need each other to breathe. The motion of Simon's thumb to Wille 's jaw to continue, the hand on the back of Simon's neck to keep him from leaving?? COME ON.
Also I want to note that Simon furrows his brow during this moment, like he needed this so bad it HURTS. He's ACHING. And you can feel it, by seeing just how much they NEED the touch of each other.
what happened? [ Season 2 Episode 5 ]
I could talk about this one until I run out of oxygen because I love it THAT MUCH. This is a memory for Simon, because he's spent MULTIPLE episodes keeping Wille's sweater close, to smell and calm back down. To keep the memory of him and being close to him but now he HAS HIM right there and he is not gonna waste that moment. To really sit in that , to cling to Wille and allow the space of consensual physical touch back into the conversation.
Again, I'm gonna mention the furrowed brow here because that's something we NEVER see whenever we are dealing with Marcus. And that is extremely important and telling on how Simon feels.
[I literally could just gif the whole scene here]
They are mirroring each other, matching each other like magnets. Responding physically, with genuine passion for each other and how much the other means without SAYING it. This scene is beautiful, and the fact the camera stays OFF them when the curtains are pulled closed?
I COULD TALK ABOUT IT UNTIL MY FACE FALLS OFF.
I will be doing another post on unwanted touch because that is VERY important as well.
Young Royals S2: A Summary
Wilhelm: “Wow. Can’t believe I’m going to burn the entire Swedish monarchy to the ground for this nerdy little choir boy I met six months ago.” Literally everyone else: “You don’t have t-” Wilhelm: “No, I’m gonna.”
“Millions of years would still not give me half enough time to describe that tiny instant of all eternity when you put your arms around me and I put my arms around you.” – Jacques Prevert
