Ilya's not just good he's generational. Both he and Shane are supposed to be SO absurdly good compared to the rest of the league that they can drag their teams to cups with ~3-4 years after signing. They're not fucking Tavares man they're like Crosby and Ovechkin but better because fiction.

Anyway a guy like that, moving to a team he has no connection to, in a city that's not appealing for any obvious reason, that he seemingly has never even visited other than for game nights? And he's not explaining why? It's not TJ going back home, it's Rozanov going to a random fuck off city in Canada.

So yeah, no, I legitimately think people would actually wonder if it's some kind of mental break. Like he just couldn't handle the pressure in Boston and picked the worst team in the league deliberately to take himself out of contention for future cups.

I don't even think people would assume he had a partner in Ottawa because literally unless he was dating fucking Justin Trudeau or some other high ranking Canadian government official why wouldn't they just move to Boston, or why wouldn't he just split his time, he has the money to charter flights, like it makes no sense.

i must have seen a gif from heated rivalry of when ilya is pointing out his face on the video game bc last night i had a dream that ilya and shane launched their friendship WAY earlier and mostly by accident via being competitive assholes

the whole premise was that ilya's boston team and shane's montreal team ended up at the same bar, except it was an arcade bar and one of the things they had was the hockey game. and hey, fair game to yell to your hockey rival that you'll beat him on AND off the ice?

and shane is nothing if not a competitive shit, so he sits and plays and beat ilya, who said something like "you only won because you're boring and drink ginger ales while i've had alcohol, i would have beaten you sober" and without even thinking shane says "bet" and essentially invites himself to Ilya's apartment (already the plan) except with the express idea that they will (also) have a rematch of the hockey game and he will wipe the floor with Ilya

the next day they realize that both of their teams, knowing that they are THE competitive assholes of all times, did not even blink an eye at shane volunteering to stay in the lair of the enemy and are kind of like. wait. holy shit. is this... a good excuse? plausible deniability?

so they kind of. keep doing it. sometimes alone, sometimes some teammates come and witness their face offs. they chirp each other and are LASER FOCUSED on beating each other. they make stupid bets on the outcomes. they are even posting (mostly ilya and the teammates that witness this) on social media

and suddenly, they can just kind of. be in public together? and everyone assumes it's because of a lost bet on this game? they go out to eat and as long as they don't split the check then everyone assumes that the one that paid lost their last video game match up

the one thing i remember is them both pushing harder the longer the reactions to them stayed under the radar. ilya literally got flowers that he posted on his social media because they came with a card that said "sorry for your loss(es)" with the es marked on in sharpie after boston lost to them on ice and ilya lost on the game with a caption that said something like 'when did hollander get a sense of humor???'. and then they were on the phone giggling about how shane is literally able to send ilya flowers publicly without anyone batting an eye

i think towards the end of the dream cliff was starting to catch on, or at least was catching on to the fact that ilya was bi and had a MASSIVE crush on shane. on the other hand, i think hayden could have walked in on them making out and his first thought would be "which idiot said they were better at kissing and made it a competition, do i really have to explain the optics of this"

gjflkdsjg'fd I think this might be one of my slightly more unhinged ones, and it's so scattered RN I honestly don't know if it'll get properly done T_T Full disclosure the idea was inspired by a Harry Potter fic I read *decades* ago that saw them create a magical yearbook using the invisbility cloak to record moving pictures of almost all of the 7th years fucking around the castle. It contained a multitude of pairings I'd literally never considered and was unbelievably hot. I'm low key sad I don't know where to find it TBH :D Anyway I liked the idea of Wille and Simon reclaiming the video as their own and turning it from something scandalous that almost tore them apart into a sort of final fuck you to HS.

me: THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT!!! ilya doesn't want him to know!!! ilya was told he's weak and lazy his whole life, and he cultivates a public persona that's the antithesis - hypermasculine, dominant, aggressive, confident. shane and ilya's established dynamic is ilya being the experienced, reassuring, playful dom. he doesn't want to admit that he needs help to manage his depression, doesn't want to admit he feels isolated and resentful and needs reassurance/comfort. admitting that feels like proving he is weak, he does need help, he is needy, and that he's a bad partner for wanting more than he's willing to ask for.

and shane does notice. he says he should spend time with the cens, talks about therapy, even supports ilya when he comes out to troy despite his own fears about being outed. shane also has limited experience being the initiator, feels out of depth with social cues, and doesn't suffer from the same childhood abuse ilya suffered from. they also both are in hypermasculine, violent careers where neither person feels comfortable being who they are - whether that's being queer, having a mental disorder, racial and language barriers, etc. - that affect their communication style.
