8 important Tips for travelling to Bogota, Colombia
Taxis have a card on the back of the front right sit this card has all the prices based on the number of the taximeter it starts from 25, and 25 doesnt mean that you have to pay like this = 25 = 2.500 Pesos.. its completly another value it will be 3.500 Pesos in this case because the minimun ride is 3.500 but lets see:
So if you see there is UNID and VALOR... so be sure the Unidad matchs with the taximeter and just look for the right price (Valor) and pay.. don't ask otherwise they will try to charge you extra stuff...
They will try to see if you know the city asking you wich way to take.. (obviously we wont know which way to take, so they take the long way and charge you because of nothing, they told me more than 5 times that there was an extra charge because he got stucked in the traffic, but if you see the taximetter it keeps running even though we stop there, Thats normal...) so that's why is better to look at the map first so we will have more idea of where we are trying to get...
I didn't use the TransMilenio because it was very full all the time and because you have to be really carefoul with your pockets and stuff (that's what many people told me)
The price of the transmilenio on Jun 7th 2013, was 1700 Pesos (almost 1 American Dollar) and if there is some holiday they charge you 1800 (that is normal too)
If you want to have a good time walking and making some shopping you can choose many different malls but i recommend you to go to "Zona Rosa" OR "Zona T" because there are 3 or more malls arround this part of the city and they are very close from each other.
if you want to go to the place you are staying at, late in the afternoon or in the night, it's better to take a Taxi inside from the Mall it's safer
I've been in 3 different parts of the city and i will tell you my perspective
Chapinero is a good place to stay because you are in the middle of the north and the South, it doesn't take to much time to be in both of those parts of the city because Chapinero is arround the 48Street, (by the way there are many universities arround there),
La Candelaria this is the Historic part of Bogota where you can find many historic places, Museums, the streets are very antique and everything arround there is like you where 30-50 years in the past
Museo de Oro (Gold Museum)
Museo Nacional (Historical Museum)
Plaza de Bolivar and its surroundings(Main plaza..)
La Candelaria Neighborhood..(Oldest part of Bogota)
in the Candelaria are there good handful of museums even one of Botero's (artist with the Fat People pics and sculptures)
Quinta de Bolivar ( Home of Colombian's Liberator Simon Bolivar)
Monserrate: Chruch on top of a peak....Awesome views of the entire city....
Maloka...Science musuem....
There are a tons of Malls....one to really visit is Hacienda Santa Barbara.....very beautiful.....
depends on your tastes....
Casa Vieja is a good touristy type resturant....typical Bogotano food.
You can also try the resturants around Parque 93, Zona Rosa and Zona T.
For Fast Food nothing beats : El Corral!
For good beer....Bogota Beer Company!
6.- Hotels & places to stay
if you are a backpacker, i recommend you www.hostelbookers.com, www.hostelworld.com (its better to see the reviews instead of the price or another stuff)
if you want to be ina family house or something similar, you should use www.airbnb.com (i've used like 6 times) and i had a great time meeting families, and people who wanted to rent a private room, a bed or the entire apartament
or you should check www.despegar.com
The people are friendly and helpful. Just be careful who you begin trusting....unfortunately... there are some of the best scam artist ...but this does not mean to shy away from people...just be cautious....
Zapaquira....for the Cathederal of Salt!! i've never been but all the people told me its amazing.... (takes more or less 2 hours from the city, people told me to take the TransMilenio heading north until you get to the "Portal Norte") and to ask wich bus goes to Zapaquira they told me it is very simple and the people are very helpful...
Guatavita: nice traditional town nearby Bogota...Lake of Guatavita has this whole legend behind it (i couldn't bee there).....
Villa de Leyva in Boyaca is such a traditional town.....its not close(i think 3-5 hours) but its worth a mention.... (i couldn't bee there also)
