he knows that he’s unnecessarily tense ,   irritable ,   driven to distraction by his once - friend’s return.    he shouldn’t obsess over it.    he shouldn’t even allow himself to dwell on it.    christian’s got bigger and better things to think on and worry about than this    –    so why does it bother him so? 

christian is drawn from his thoughts by a tentative nudge at his shoulder ,   one that ,   despite himself ,   causes a sharp exhale born of annoyance as he swings around to glower at the person trying to get his attention.       “   what is it?   ”       he grinds out ,   and then wishes that he hadn’t snapped.    that’s not going to win him any favors.

“Fuck” she whispered as the hot tea splashed onto her chest, dripping down her torso. 

It was the cherry on top to her already fantastic week. She had spent the past week, or had it been more?  With her head buried beneath a mountain of paperwork and research. Not because it was necessary, but because she needed a distraction. She needed her mind to be on anything other than the  Athanas family. 

But ‘be careful what you ask,’ for was a lesson she quickly grew to learn this past week. She wanted a distraction, so she got one--her parents tombstone had been destroyed when one of the groundskeepers accidentally backed into it with a truck. Her mind was now buzzing with deadlines, she’d painted herself into a corner. And now her favorite shirt would most likely require dry cleaning.

opium, friend! when i heard you were coming back i was so hyped to see how you would take on chloe’s character, and i’ve so enjoyed seeing her on the dash! it certainly hasn’t been easy for her (i mean that seance was Not Kind to our girl), but she has taken it in stride and!! i can’t wait to see how she continues to grow among the craziness of vertmoor.

Chloe is a lovely character, she has so much heart and family spirit. You portray her so well and I can't wait to see her around Vertmoor again helping to shed light on the VA foundation and everything that goes on there. Her relationship with Louis and Neek is so interesting and special to me!

Truly the sweetest group I’ve ever been a part of. I love it here.

A biologist? Roman knew bits and pieces about the foundation, he had some friends who had experienced life within the walls but somehow nobody ever seemed to really know what happened. Even those that had interned there (like he assumed, this girl) never seemed to fully understand what went on at the top. While Roman had little interest in his Father’s personal secrets, he did feel strongly that he had some kind of moral obligation to figure out whether the foundation was safe and running properly. He knew that it was very unlikely they’d ever allow him close enough to do that, though. 

“Sure,” he agreed. He wasn’t motivated by the opportunity for a professional in. At that exact moment he was just more than glad to get out of that house and stop the friction that his appearance had stirred up. There was only one issue, “But we may have to regroup for tomorrow because I doubt anywhere is open at this time. Except my hotel mini bar and I’m a little scared of the bill come Monday.”

“Well good sir, the bars of many hotels are still open.” She needed to leave that house, too much weird had occurred. Although she would never admit it, she was scared to leave by herself. It was irrational but part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched or something. “I insist...the first round is on me.”

Ahhh, so it was that. “That’s right. There were so many people there, it was hard to keep track. Sorry but do you blame me for wanting to block out that particular night?” She asked with a slight smirk and raise of her brow. “Not exactly a normal kind of thing.” Not that she’d expected it to be. They’d all gone there for a seance for fucks sake. And apparently with a psychic no one invited. “My story? Are you a reporter or somethin’?” River joked with a small laugh. There had been enough of them roaming around here, it wasn’t impossible. “I don’t have a story. Not like the ones in that house. Compared to that, I’m painfully normal and boring.” 

Tilting her glass towards the other, “I don’t blame you at all. That’s sort of why I’m here. I put in for the rest of the week to be off. And I’ve come here to soak my oats in buckets of liquor.” Finish her glass, she asked the bartender for some water. She wanted to enjoy her night, but be able to feel halfway descent in the morning. 

“Ha! No. I am not a reporter. Nothing against the profession, I just appreciate having some sort of a routine, you know what I mean? Which I suppose also makes me painfully normal and boring.”

Bluebell was taking advantage of the festival in Vertmoor to do her favorite thing: be important on social media. She was documenting all of the aesthetics as she came by them. The strawberry picking was particularly her favorite. Cute shots of her picking strawberries? Followers would eat that up. She placed a perfectly plump red berry on the palm of her hand for an Instagram story. 

“You know they’re saying you should wash these with like salt and water now? Apparently we’ve been eating bugs all this time,” She shuddered at the thought.

“I wash mine in vinegar water. See my mother was from the islands so, washing fruit and all food for that matter has always been normal. ‘You never where anything has been or who has touched it’, is what she would say.” Chloe responded absentmindedly as she played one of those ring toss games over the glass bottles.

Summer Fest had always been Belva’s favorite time of the year. It was the only time that she was really allowed out of the house upon the hill with any sense of freedom; not required to stay by her father’s side and smile idly at his coworkers like she had to do at parties, but instead allowed to interact with actual children. Children like her, except ones that hadn’t grown up with Vidal as a father. It was freeing, and exciting, and even as an adult, she can’t hold back her enthusiasm. Even with the absolute madness of the past few weeks of her life, the most recent event being having to report July missing to the police only a few days ago. The stress and unease are still there, but she attempts to shove it away, to place it in a corner so that she can at least attempt to get back to something resembling normal, where all that mattered was the next thing she posted and whether or not she’d look pretty in a photo.

So here she was, wandering around the booths in the center of town, dressed in a pretty little sundress and sandals with ribbons that were wound up her calves. The sun was shining and there was music coming from just to the right of her, and things finally felt a bit easier to handle. The blonde is caught off guard as a vendor hands her a stick wrapped tightly with pink candy floss, a quick, “Oh, no, I can’t,” about to pass her lips, but they’re already gone. After taking a quick Boomerang of the treat and posting it to her story, she turns to the nearest person with a bright smile. “Do you want this? I can’t eat it,” she explains, holding the treat out in front of her.

She eyed the other briefly for a moment. What was that saying about taking anything, particularly candy from strangers they told children? Not that mattered, because if there was anything that Chloe had a weakness to it was sweets.

“Why can’t you eat it? What’s in it?”

Cassia’s art stall at the festival was as close to their own private art gallery that they had gotten. Which wasn’t saying much when it was better compared to a tiny office cubicle, but it still was theirs. They had figured that it was a good idea - combining a display of their paintings with a  face painting station.  And so far their plan seemed to be working. While they painted kids’ faces, their parents looked at their artwork, and so far they’d already sold four paintings. Which was already double their all-time record. 

However, there was a lull, and Cassia took the opportunity to start working on some of the empty canvases they had brought in case they actually sold something. The painting was simple but made to almost fit the feeling of the festival - primarily focusing on flowers and berries. They were so focused that they didn’t notice that someone had come up to their stall until they heard them clear their throat.  “Oh, I’m so sorry,” Cassia said, looking up as they put the toothbrush they were using to drip the paint onto the canvas into their water jar, “How can I help you?”

With a basket filled with berries and a large stuffed bear pressed against her side, Chloe appeared from from the ideal scientist. She was in full festival mode, originally she was drawn to the stall because of the face painting, it was all she was missing to fully take in the festival. But now she found herself lost in all the art. 

She stuffed her mouth with a few strawberries, before something went down the wrong pipe, forcing her to both clear her throat and disturb the artist. 

“Oh, sorry,” why did I come over here again? “Yes, I’d like my face to be painted. Well half of it, please.”

When she said stranger, it had been accurate - she barely knew this woman except for her face. River had seen her a few times around and she felt like a part of whatever was going on around here. Even if she didn’t know how yet. “River.” She said with a slight nod. “I’ve seen you around, haven’t I? You look familiar but I don’t know how yet, can’t place my finger on it.” Maybe it was the booze or maybe it was that River had a horrible memory, but she was having a really hard time.

Chloe finished her drink, signaling the bartender for a refill. She could knew tonight would go by much smoother if she had a buzz to lighten her mood. “Well, we were both in that freaky ass house with the terrible psychic...but beyond attending seances what’s your story?”

July 9th 2019

River needed a fucking break. After hanging out by the creek after work and doing some lines she shouldn’t have, she found herself back at Ritzies, greeting her favorite barkeep and making herself comfortable at the bar. July was missing. Whatever had happened a couple nights ago had happened, she couldn’t change that and did she want to? No. But that didn’t mean she didn’t want to spend her latest paycheck on overpriced drinks - fucking knobs for jacking it up. Finishing off her second glass, she ordered another one before noticing someone familiar. “Surprised to see you here” River said in their direction, leaning onto the bar top.

It was unlike her but she needed time off. She had the rest of the week to herself and couldn't think of a better way to start it off then by getting drunk. She wanted to forget whatever it was that she had witnessed at that house. 

She sat at the bar, working on her second glass of wine. Wine drunk was the best kind of drunk, in her opinion. 

The young blonde's words registered over the low music, “hmm you do look familiar. I’m Chloe--” like a lightbulb, she remembered where she knew the other from. A small knot formed in her stomach, she was actively trying to forget, yet this was somehow a reminder.

“They’re not really my siblings,” he points out. He’s not being rude but it’s true. He hardly even feels connected to his Father, never mind a bunch of orphans he adopted. Another poor and weird decision. It’s not that he doesn’t sympathise with them; after all, he grew up without a reliable parental figure too but it’s just not the same as a real sibling. 

“Employees?” He knows some of them, it’s interesting the type of person that would work for that foundation. He still doesn’t fully understand what it’s purpose is. 

He goes back to her last question quickly, not really wanting to linger too long on the gritty details of whatever that dreadful place was up to. Judging by what was happening here, it could only be worse. “Yeah,” he agrees, running his thumb briefly over his bottom lip as he thinks. Could it be worse? Normally it would of been time to lighten the mood with a joke, “It was pretty bad. Hopefully that’s the last I’ll see of psychic events.”

She nodded her head and listened to his statements, as an only child, all she ever wanted was siblings. Especially now that both of her parents had passed, she’d love to have anyone around to keep those memories alive. But everyone’s family was different, so she thought it best to not to pry. 

“Yes, I’m a biologist, but I don’t want to talk about work after all of that. Would you like to go and grab a drink or something? Perhaps put some distance and go some place, normal?”

It seemed the theme of the night was almost familiar people showing up out of nowhere, or well the door. Waving the burger towards the seat she already occupied, nodding along. Frowning down at her lack of food, and his otherwise full platter of it. Pushing it towards her in offering, choosing to focus on his fries, burger and drink for just a second longer. He wasn’t trying to be rude, but in that second his mind only had one track.Closing his eyes for a second before washing it all down with a slurp of the shake, ignoring manners for one second longer. 

“Hi,” he answered, frowning. “You were there, right? You seem familiar. That or I’m going crazy, which isn’t far off.”

Normally she would play a game of cat and mouse, but given everything that had occurred and her level of hunger, she didn’t care and went right for the basket of onion rings, a gentle moan escaped her as she ate the crispy and delicious fried onion. 

She leaned over calling one of the waitresses for a tall glass of coke. After washing everything down, she cleared her throat to answer his question. 

“Yes, I was there...whatever that was,” she couldn’t continue to eat from this mans food without knowing, “I’m sorry, what is your name? I’m just stuffing my face without the slightest clue. I’m Chloe.”

“Right now? No one, considering that my boss is dead, well, I suppose whoever comes in after him.” Either way, I don’t really care.
