Jeff Wall’s 1993 photographic recreation of Hokusai’s classic, A Sudden Gust of Wind (1830-5)

“Without passion, all the skill in the world won’t lift you above craft. Without skill, all the passion in the world will leave you eager but floundering. Combining the two is the essence of the creative life.”
-Twyla Tharp, The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life (via mayshi)
Harvey Benge Ways of Looking 1992-2014 Northart Gallery This exhibition was almost a survey of Benge's photographic work over the last decade or so. These works portrays different elements of life; the over looked, the unnoticed and other almost indifferent ways of looking, seeing and capturing the moment. Photographically, Benge's skills are conceptually intense and explorative. This exhibition was full of different elements of Benge's career and interests and I felt that this explained his artistic style as whole within the gallery setting. I can appreciate how different ways of presented these photographs created different themes and notions through walking around the gallery.

“ I paid the writer for each sign, re photographed then enlarged each on to PVC billboard vinyl. I was interested in the aesthetic these of grungy ripped card and scrawling text in biro , the appeal for spare change for “food and shelter”. There are similarities between each beggar’s approach. Polite and to the point, they are in fact advertisements and use the tools of advertising to present a concise message to the street traffic. They gently comment on generosity and the use of public space as avenue to talk about poverty.”

Artist Statement:
She squats against the wall with her head between her knees and her legs in her arms. Her hair tarnished by the light hangs to the ground. It hides the face and whole front of the body. The left foot is crossed on the right. She is the north. It goes without saying that only vanquished hide their faces though not all without exception. Standing or sitting with head erect some content themselves with opening their eyes no more. It is of course forbidden to withhold the face or other part from the searcher who demands it and may without fear of resistance remove the hand from the flesh it hides or raise the lid to examine the eye. The hair of the woman has thus many time been gathered up and drawn back and the head raised and the face laid bare and whole front of the body. - S. Beckett

In this work I have taken the colour scheme from previous investigations and found these colours in the everyday. These monochromatic images create a motif of distinguishable forms in nature.

In this work I have chosen to document a temporary construction in Waitakere, in my efforts to document this I have gone back multiple times and never successfully photographed the construction. These attempts have created a distinct series that references the wider Waitakere area, in moments of overlap and distortion. This work illustrates the unperfected art of an artist. Each photographic work has a distinct and individual colour palette; these have lead to future investigations about colour and became the initial palette for my flower arrangements.

This series of work discuses the notions of mortality and exchange through the creation of the art object. This particular group of found objects has been revived through collaboration between a florist and myself. This is done in order to form a remembrance of a once powerful exchange between two people. This gift of sadness is slowly forgotten to the inevitable wastelands of the Waikumete cemetery of Waitakere. This work is made in honor of this exchange through strict notions of organization and minimalist formation.
