ASK ME ANYTHING PROJECT: DONE.
Finally, after nearly having to apply for an extension because technology kept screwing me over I AM DONE!
For my ask me anything project i decided to create a webpage. As my creative was a cake decorator running a small business from home and does majority of her marketing and business through the internet, I thought it would be a good way to incorporate another element of her practise into this project.
Although id have to say this class would have been my favourite of the course, I found this final project really challenging. As this was our last project my time management went out of the window and found it really hard to find the time to sit down, think creatively and produce quality content. I also found myself struggling to translate concepts and ideas from my head into something real, which ultimately came down to my lack of technical skills.
I definitely believe the outcome of this project could have been better and that i really need to push myself in order to achieve results I am truly happy with. However, I do feel grateful because this project helped me identify my weaknesses as a designer and I think that has been the most important lesson for me.
ANYWAY, enough from negative nelly because I literally have loved seeing ever single one of everyones outcomes and it actually inspires me so much and i seriously cant believe how amazing this cohort is!
Guerilla Girls
Week 10 was one of my favourite lectures. Another discovery of a historical movement that moved me. The Guerilla Girls a group of feminist activist and professional artist who are speaking up on discrimination against women in the artistic world and the inequality of female artists. As well as exposing sexism and racism in the art world.
If you have time read this interview done by Interview Magazine with the Guerilla Girls to get more insight on their stance and movement.
https://www.interviewmagazine.com/art/guerrilla-girls
I also really enjoyed learning about the Guerrilla girls particularly because I support all that they stand for. I think its so important in todays society that we have these activist groups as the majority of people aren’t brave enough to stand up for what they believe in.
Group’s like Guerrilla Girls prove how powerful and influential design can be, and how crucial a role design plays when trying to spark change.
I did some further research and this particular piece caught my eye. The topic of stereotypes resonates with me. In media/film stereotypes play a dominant role and project stigma.

Not sure if its just me, or just the decision of creating a website for my Ask Me Anything assignment, but I’ve been feeling pretty uninspired lately. Hopefully a bit of research can turn things around and get me on track!
Since its Thursday and since we are oh so close to finishing the semester I thought itd be cool to reflect on our first assignment!
(and i also just realised I had never actually posted my first communication design submission..... oops)
“Hello, My Question is... Can Design Fix The World”
The idea behind it was to find typefaces out of tools from around my house to relate back to the question of “fixing” the world, as tools fix things.
Looking back this was such an underwhelming outcome aesthetically and its crazy to think this wasnt even that long ago! Definitely hope my final submission for this next assignment turns out much better
WHAT THE ‘F’
Crafts, illustration, and textile design piece by graphic designer Claudia Aksha of Jakarta, Indonesia
“The name Girls Gone Wild is chosen for this zine because it resembles how radical feminists were in the past, which is out of the norm and have no fear. And this zine will fully talk about radical feminism and the impact of radical feminism in the 21st century. Girls Gone Wild Zine is a little bit different from other feminism zine because GGW Zine criticize feminism (not in a bad way). GGW Zine criticize what feminism or feminist today often to forget and missed in today’s context. GGW Zine is straightforward, sarcastic and out of the feminist norm. GGW Zine is still a feminist zine, just in a different way.
The materials chosen for this zine is very unconventional, it’s not like how zine is normally produced. The reason behind it is because I wanted to discusses radical feminism in a radical way which is going outside the norm of how a zine should be.”
This embroided zine is absolutely fantastic! Unfortunately I think the time constraints for this project may limit my ability to construct something embroided to this amazing level.
Actually love this
Such an amazing Idea. I love it!
Change of interviewee
Unfortunately, I had to change my interviewee due to scheduling difficulties with Heath Gregory which is totally understandable. So, back to the drawing board!
My original list was
- Jessica Walsh (graphic designer/ illustrator/ art director)
-Stefan Sagmiester (graphic designer/ illustrator/ art director)
-Health Gregory (web designer/ art director)
-Debby Leo Hendricks (cake decorator/ small business owner)
-Elroy Hendricks (artist)
But all is well! I have conducted my interview with Melbourne based cake decorator and small business owner Debby Leo Hendricks!
The First Things First Manifesto
Written in 1963 and published in 1964 by Ken Garland.
Would you have signed this? Who will design the things that are not directly attributed to profit and move capitalism forward?
36 years later and yet in 2000 it was all the same. Priorities remain pretty much up for discussion which is why we need criticality in our work.

I am in awe of this woman. So insanely talented
I think week 10′s lecture was one of the most eye opening lectures for me so far. I thought it was really cool to learn about the United Colours Of Benetton’s controversial advertisements. I can definitely understand why people would have taken offence to some of the more confronting images Benetton was shoving in peoples faces all to sell a product. But I think at the end of the day its really important for us as a society to be talking about these issues Benetton were raising. By creating a dialogue I think it allows us to critique outdated beliefs and social “norms” and work toward a more accepting and equal future
design ethics: what i think of benetton’s controversial ads
When Luciano Benetton met photographer Oliviero Toscano in 1982, he was shown that a focus of message over product could be more effective in launching billboards and advertisements. It was during these years that United Colors of Benetton started publishing their controversial ads, with strong messages surrounding race, gender equality, to even world hunger.
Do I fully support putting a corporate brand identity onto an image that speaks in a very confrontational way about certain social issues? Not entirely.
It’s not that I’m offended; these were taken thirty years ago and taking offense to them would be a bit too late anyway. I just think that with this PR reality, as much as the world might think that Benetton was “speaking for justice” and kind of became this social, activist warrior name who confidently pushed these issues forward, I don’t think it was their main focus.
I imagine a meeting room where the executives and creative directors discuss their next campaign, and let’s be real: Everyone’s thinking about how to sell the brand. What message they can use to spark the most public reaction, and therefore place attention on their brand. What picture will be the most talked about for a long period of time so people remember that Benetton did that.
Surely some may disagree but for me, at the end of the day, their motives were probably just 90% marketing and 10% social activism.
But it worked.
And this method still continues to work to this day.
How many times have we seen ads that are controversial these days? How many times have brands poked fun at certain hot topics or news or even political matters? How many times have brands used more “diversity” in their models to make a statement towards the fashion industry?
The nature of marketing and advertising is rapidly evolving more than ever, and this includes them being braver to find unconventional ways to appeal to their target audience. They might still be within ethical rules, but to be fair, they do enjoy floating near the borderline.
Do I hate it though? No. In fact, I respect and admire it. Because at least they’re bringing some meaning to what they’re putting out there. Instead of being bombarded with product sales, I think being bombarded with strong, clear messages that encourage people to think socially is a much better world.
And at the end, if it does the job, which is to sell,
they have no reason to quit.

I totally agree with this. Yes, these ads are making humanity question and think about certain social important issues that we are still facing today, but also the main object/motive behind these confrontational ads are unfortunately all about the marketing strategy. It’s ads like these generates a discussion around certain topics, but also at the same time increases a certain brands popularity, thus increasing sales and convinces consumers that if they purpose something from this company, they are also supporting the brand and what it stands for.
Totally agreed.
In week 9′s class we were given the task to find type faces in the human form. Much like finding type faces out of RMIT’s buildings but we used scissors to frame the letter forms not a camera.
The bauhaus was not an institution…it was an idea.

ZINES
In class we explored the world of zines. We learnt about all the different types of ways to make a zine as well as their use. Zines can be made at any size but they are typically made at an A5-A6 size, which is quite small and compact. In class we managed to get a large A3 size down to a A5 zine whilst also numbering each of the pages, binding the zine and trimming the edges.
Personally, I’d like to take a different approach with the “Ask Me Anything” assignment. The complexity of creating a zine was interesting and would be a fun challenge however I think I’d like to explore web design or possibly even app design.
A variety of letter forms.
