I’m just going through observations as someone who still hasn’t played ZA but I still play showdown and rom hacks but from what I’m seeing…
Yeah, these decisions are getting stupid.
They really gave Garchomp another mega evolution. ANOTHER MEGA EVOLUTION.
And yet I was never a Flygon fan and never understood why everyone liked it so much but you see where I am going with this, right?
Why not HIM!? Megas always felt like they leaned more to helping out some pokémon who needed a boost besides just making popular pokémon be even more cool or overpowered. I think Flygon is a pokémon who absolutely could’ve used one and since Garchomp in this form is made into a special attacker instead; they could’ve done the same with Flygon—preferably without stripping its Ground-type!? Like I never saw Garchomp as a popular pokémon outside of competitive besides being infamously known (Cynthia). A regional variation would be cool, but why another mega form? It wouldn’t be so bad if they gave Flygon one on top of it or Noivern. If anything, fix the original’s speed!
But ngl, seeing the DLC from a glance, I feel like we should’ve gotten more megas. Like I kinda wished they could’ve given Swallot, Noivern hell Arbok one. Ik it feels off but it makes sense logically to give a couple to the two newest generations of pokémon. Baxcallibur wasn’t necessary though.
I think there’s a competitive reason as to why they dropped Garchomp Z’s Ground-typing but I don’t know how to exactly explain it (same reason as to why all general physical Electric-type moves have some kind of drawback). Would’ve been cooler if they went with a jet-engine approach or make it more shark-like but not like another Sharpedo. Water/Dragon instead.
A lot of people give this guy backlash too.
I’m not one of those who cares or likes Lucario that much either, but giving him a Z mega at least makes some sense as it is a fan favourite. I don’t really mind the design either as it always bothered me with its normal form because when I finally played the games all those years, I DID NOT expect this mf to be part Steel. I thought he was Psychic/Fighting from what I saw back when I played SSB: Brawl. This design leans onto that.
So that raises the question…
WHY TF IS IT NOT JUST A SOLID STEEL TYPE!? OR PSYCHIC/STEEL OR PSYCHIC/FIGHTING? I don’t care if it’s essentially another Mega Metagross or Mega Mewtwo X with the type choices. Just make it make sense and make it more different from the other mega! At least Garchomp Z did something “different” with its typing.
Similar issue with Mega Zeraora too who idefk why it of all things got a mega since I swear I only ever see this thing in nsfw stuff if not rarely on showdown. Volcaneon and Hoopa felt more memorable than it, Marshadow was more memorable and it’s a hyped up mythical from the same generation!
But that’s not the thing… and we’ve seen everyone meming about it. We know the issue here.
Why does the rare, forgettable goonbait get a mega that colour shifts into the pokémon who I think—WE ALL think deserves one more? It doesn’t even become Electric/Dark or anything. It’s still a solo Electric-type like most of the electric megas in this generation. Luxray so needs one because he has an interesting stat distribution that could give the possibility of making him more bulkier or maybe making him nimbler. The Dark-type fits its nature and its colour scheme, making Crunch STAB and giving it an immunity to Psychic which is better for switch-ins. Maybe it could learn Sucker Punch too for the new typing which works well for the possible speed reduction. Literally fans were asking for it! I’m kinda glad Zeroroa didn’t get a dual typing after all just for more salt in Luxray’s wound. That would make me wish Marshadow or Phione (yes I said Phione, not Manaphy) had got a mega instead.
And don’t even get me started again on these two pieces of shit
I saw their stats for either form, their shinies… ugh they did my son so dirty. I will make a concluded bitching post about it later.
The DLC should’ve had a few more megas.
On a positive note of things, probably the best megas from the DLC by far is probably Meowstic, Chimeco, Absol and Darkrai. They cooked for those ones. Especially Darkrai cause he actually looks like nightmare fuel. Staraptor is cool too but I feel it wasn’t that necessary imo.
Honourable mentions outside the DLC: Eelektross, Dragalgae, Malamar, Delphox.
I want to like Starmie cause of Patrick lmao but I really wished there was more to it. Imagine being based off of brittlestars or being a giant, rotating star shuriken-gear thingy? I can’t exactly describe it unless I drew it, but in general, I think the mega we got is the only shitty mega design that gets away with it, just ‘cause.
That and Pyroar. I think he aside from the ‘Chus was done dirty and he was one of the megas I was most excited about because he looked cool, I really wanted to use him and could use a buff! I know its mane is supposed to represent Japanese kanji for “fire” but I’m pretty sure this has been done many times, maybe not directly in a pokémon’s design but just look at the many Fire Blast animations. It just sparks confusion in people that don’t know anything about kanji or even recognize it.
Not that I have anything wrong with that concept but there’s other pokémon that could pull it off better. Pyroar is just not one of them for those reasons. Maybe they could’ve made the mane black and the yellow streaks become a narrower, “orange” firy glow or something so they could still use the idea but add to it like what they did for Absol Z. The change could not only fit really well for Lysandre but because lions with darker manes in the wild are seen as more “powerful” which is a nice nod to that with the mega upgrade and maybe with there typically only being one male Pyroar in a pride.
Speaking of male Pyroar, it’s disappointing (and lazy) that female Mega Pyroar doesn’t even get an obvious gender difference either…
