Hello all! I know that quite a few of my followers are familiar with my girlfriend/partner/ride til I die lady - Shawna aka @theresacullens . A few of you followed our progression from new found tumblr friends, to closer than your average friend, to full on gal pals, that took place over the course of the last six years. We’ve never talked a lot about Shawna’s health on this platform…or any other platform really, but over the last two years things have become far more advanced than we ever imagined they would be, and we’re taking to tumblr to start a youcaring, and sell some inspirational lady stickers!
(Us the first night we met in person - 6 years ago vs. us this year. Different hair. Still high key gay)
Close to seven years ago, Shawna was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease called Scleroderma.
Scleroderma is a long term autoimmune disease that results in hardening of the skin. (people sometimes say it causes people to ‘turn to stone’)
For a long time we believed that the disease was of the limited variety aka it would only effect her hands, feet, throat, and face. However, while we were in the process of moving in together, she was given a diagnosis of diffuse scleroderma, meaning the disease was effecting her internal organs, and had begun to manifest as interstitial lung disease, GI tract involvement (esophageal tightening, reflux, loss of appetite etc.), and increased skin involvement (locked fingers and loss of mobility). We began treating the disease aggressively with a number of immunosuppresants, iv infusions, and medications to help with her symptoms. Despite receiving wonderful care, her lung function has continued to decrease, and her skin/joints are continuing to deteriorate.
Her doctors have agreed that an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant is officially our next step. We’ve begun evaluations for the transplant…or rather Shawna has begun evaluations and I have begun spending time in the hospital looking nervous and gassy. They’re checking to make sure her body can withstand treatment. The entire evaluation process will take approximately 3 weeks. She’s had her bone marrow tested and has already proven to be a total badass (SHE DIDN’T EVEN FLINCH!!!!)
(A 24 hour heart monitor test, and two skin biopsies! 100% badass. Should have a medal.)
After the evaluations, if everything looks okay, she will begin treatment. The first step involves neupogen shots. Neupogen is a drug that essentially causes a mass production of stem cells. So much so that they sort of bust out of your bones and fall into your blood stream where they can be collected. It’s not a fun process by any means, but it certainly isn’t the worst part of treatment. Following neupogen, her stem cells will be collected and separated using a cool as fuck process called apheresis. Her blood essentially gets spun at a ridiculously fast speed in order to separate out all of the the different sorts of cells. They then isolate her stem cells, and freeze them for her! After this she will be admitted to the hospital where she will undergo the highest dose of chemotherapy that a human being can handle. It essentially kills you without killing you. It’s a hot pile of garbage basically, but its necessary garbage. Once there is nothing left in her blood (none of her mutated T or B cells that have caused this disease) they will reintroduce her own fresh stem cells back into her blood. When her white blood cell count reaches .1 she is released from the hospital and we begin the ridiculously long road to recovery. (The first 100 days suck the hardest)
What we’re hoping to achieve is a slowing of the scleroderma, an increase in Shawna’s lifespan, and just…better quality of life? Also just a softening of the tissue in her hands so that she can function more easily.
(these are some aesthetic shots lmao)
So. I’m completely oversharing…because Shawna won’t be able to work at all during this time, and the financial burden is mostly on me. I’ve made some inspirational lady stickers (pictured above) These characters have inspired Shawna and I, and honestly they help us through when we’re feeling weak as hell. I’ve put them up for sale, and the link is below this paragraph! A few of the women featured (Emma Decody, Birgitte Nyborg, Laura Roslin, and Cosima Niehaus) are women who suffer from illness, and serve and inspo for Shawna as she goes through this. Some of the other ladies are just generally inspiring, or inspiring to me as a caregiver. We hope they inspire you all as well! (I’ll be drawing other ones as well they’re actually being finished right now, but I wanted to go ahead and post this asap!) Inspirational lady stickers are for sale here!
Any money we make from the stickers will go towards paying for cleaning supplies (the cleaning schedule is INSANE), helping with things like gas money and transportation, general supplies such as hospital masks, gloves, and bleach, helping us make a bit of our rent since I’ll have to take off to be here with Shawna during the first few months that she’s home, and also with any unforseen medical bills that arise during this process. This is a huge thing to ask of you all, but even if you can just signal boost for us we would be eternally grateful. We’ve set up a youcaring in case anyone A. Hates stickers, B. Wants to donate more, or C. would like to see at least semi regular updates/pictures of us.
Youcaring can be found here!
Scleroderma is a rare as fuck disease and an unpredictable one. If you’re curious about anything please feel free to send me an ask. I’m also linking to Johns Hopkins as they have it all summarized well. –> What is Scleroderma?
just friends… yeah right

National City may have lost faith in Supergirl, but I haven’t. And you shouldn’t either.
