Everyone's like "Oh Chowder is so open, Chowder is so sweet, everyone knows stuff about him" in the OMGCP universe but do they really? Do they really?
Because if you've met any super nice person for a LONG time and become really good friends with them, you notice things. Namely, that if they don't know someone well, they don't willingly give anything away
It's kind of hard to explain and sounds contradictory, but we open with Chowder being introduced to us as really open with everyone and sharing himself, but if you've ever met anyone who is nice but doesn't like people in their business, they have TACTICS
Like Chowder is really open about stuff! Inconsequential stuff!!
He'll talk about being from California, going to private school, loving the Sharks, and its a lot, it's a lot to greet someone with so you're like, oh okay, but you never know he doesn't go into specifics. You never notice he doesnt tells you exactly where he's from. You never question it
It's because he's bombarding you with all the intro questions people usually have, and then when you forget maybe a few things, he'll remind you, but it reinforces that that's really open, that he gave you "A lot" about himself
You know enough to describe Chowder to someone else without sounding like you're missing anything! No one will question that Chowder never tells you about high-school so much
Unless you're his friends of course, but by then, they get slowly introduced and bond with Chowder and so they don't notice that they seem to know Chowder a lot better
And maybe when Chowder goes to the NHL you see him sitting and smiling and rambling about his time with SMH but he never says anything incriminating, just things that are "potentially risky" but really aren't, but they think he's too nice to tell
But he can tell. He knows what to say and what not to say and his sunshine demeanor never will change off the ice.
After Bitty and him address that stuff in college a lot, later, after Chowder is in the NHL, a reporter tries to make a snide comment about Jack, but Chowder does the "play dumb to insult the other person" tactic but Bitty's head snaps to look at Chowder because he immediately realizes it.
After that interview is over and the reporter is effectively running away, Bitty and Chowder share a look, shake hands, and walk away
