Mad Vs Sad Speech for English
In today’s society, there is an unnecessary amount of pressure brought upon all people, no matter their age. We all have an image that we are expected to stand up to, and we are always being compared to this image. Teenagers especially, feel the brunt of these expectations. Learning about ourselves and who we are as people isn’t enough. We deal with high school, a place where you can’t make one decision without being judged or talked out. We live in a society where it is more “socially acceptable” to be mad, rather than sad.
Men, of all ages, face the same dilemma. Through all the movies, magazines, health products, and “enhancements’, men have been given an image. The image of being big and strong. The protector. My grandfather, who was diagnosed with clinical depression in his teenage years, told me something when I was about ten years old. He put his hand on my shoulder, and said: “Son, it is always better to be mad, rather than sad.” I have lived my life going by those few simple words. I recently came to the realization, I’m human, you’re human, we are all human. How is it fair that men are looked at as “less of a man” for crying, or showing emotion. But when a man gets mad, it’s entertainment. People will pay hundreds of dollars to watch two men fight in a cage, but heaven forbid a man gets upset! Men have an image that we are expected to live up to, but we aren’t the only ones.
Women face the same dilemma that all men face. They have the image of a supermodel that they are compared to. This causes more problems than I think anyone really notices. In today’s standards, the “average girl” would not be on a billboard. These girls see these “supermodels” and wish they could look like them. But only because the media has made men expect girls to look like that. Instead of a girl being sad that she doesn’t look like that, she gets mad. Mad at herself, mad at her parents, mad at her “better looking friends”. This anger then turns into eating disorders, drug addictions, and turns them into completely different people. I have witnessed the angst that teenage girls go through, trying to “fit in”. If a girl was sad, she would be judged. People would call her an “emo” or say she is only looking for attention.
Anyone in today’s society, who doesn’t meet the “expectations”, is judged. Whether it be that they don’t have a six-pack, or that they are over weight, or that they aren’t a “supermodel”, they are judged. The pressure that is put on everyone makes me sick to my stomach. When a man is sad, he is viewed as, and as I have been called: “gay”, “queer”, or “a girl”. But when he is mad, it is acceptable, and some people find it amusing. When a girl is sad, people think she just wants attention. Holding in emotions causes you to harvest your feelings and that only leads to more problems. In the year 2000, approximately one million people died from suicide. A global mortality rate of 16 per 100,000, or one death every 40 seconds. If that isn’t a problem, then I don’t know what is.
Being mad is more “socially acceptable” than being sad. We are given so many images that we are expected to live up to. Men have an image of being the protector, and when we cry, we are viewed as “weak”. Women have an image of being a petit supermodel, and when they aren’t, some are sad. When they are sad, they are viewed as attention seekers. A change needs to be made. We are all suffering, you just won’t notice until it’s your time. What do you think?
