Day 4 - A quick spin, an old friend and home (26th October 2016)
It was our last day however we had until midday before we had to check out of the hotel so we decided to hire bikes and go for a ride around Central Park. Armed with Liam's Go Pro we set off looking for Alice in wonderland and the Carousel and of course we had to have hot dogs from a street vendor before we left New York (not so hot but still very good). Back at the hotel we finished our packing and said our farewells to the big apple and traveled east on the subway to JFK airport and to meet a Mark who had arrived at the same airport earlier that day. On route the train was delayed, however as we waited, 3 males entered our carriage and started to play loud disco music, they then started to perform acrobatics around a pole. We were impressed but the locals were not very amused. We arrived at JFK and after checking our bags in, we went to find a taxi to travel the 2 or so miles to Mark's hotel. We enquired with the driver about the price and he said with, a straight face, that will be $59. I like Mark but not $59 worth (after questioning the price, the driver thought we were going to the Manhattan hotel and not the JFK hotel.) We had an enjoyable hour with Mark, catching up on all the gossip before it was time to say our goodbyes. We used the hotel FREE airport shuttle to get back to JFK and sat down with a Chinese meal to wait for our flight. We flew back to blighty with Delta airlines, although not the most comfortable of flights, we did enjoy the food and the entertainment and the views of the sun rise above the clouds at Heathrow was magical.

Day 3 - Out and about in Manhattan (25th October 2016)
In April we completed 3 marathons in 3 days, I didn’t realise this was only a warm up for New York.
Today we were going to hit Manhattan, so we were out of the hotel and in the queue for our visit to the Top of the Rock at 0830. It was well worth the early start as we had fantastic views south of the Empire State building and north to Central Park. We even managed to share the views via Facetime. Next it was across to Grand Central Station for more photos and to see where many films were made. Whilst walking around the food court Anna asked a stupid question, so at 1000 we sat down to a sweet and sour Chinese. A must for Anna, was the New York National Library. Not just to see the stunning architecture but to pay homage to the original Winnie the Pooh and friends. We had read on line the Central Park Zoo should take around 90 minuets to walk around. So we paid our $24 to get in and with the film Madagascar in mind we entered the zoo. I will simply say that it took us 45 minuets to walk around and that includes visiting the Tropical House twice. To end the day we visited a packed Times Square (including shopping at the Disney store) and enjoyed a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Day 2 - A day with Lady Liberty (24th October 2016)
We’re thoroughly enjoying New York, we spent the day exploring Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We had read previously to allow 3 - 5 hours for the visit. We arrived at 8.30 am and after security was on the first boat out. We ended spending 8 hours there and caught the last boat back (and we still didn’t finish it all). Going up to the crown of Lady Liberty was amazing and is a good reason to return one day ….
We had to abandon our plans of cycling back to the hotel as it was getting dark and started walking to try to find somewhere to eat. After a diversion to see the 9/11 memorial, we found a lovely bar called Church Publick and enjoyed a very expensive bar meal. There was no tourists in the bar, only locals so we felt pleased with ourselves.
After the meal we decided to walk back to the hotel; from the boat to the hotel was 5 miles which after a day exploring, we were shattered by the time we finished. It was worth it as we passed Wall Street, Madison Square Gardens and Times Square.

Day 1 - Adventure in Central Park (23rd October 2016)
In one word, amazing. We were up and out of the hotel by 7am and walked north, up Broadway, dodging the steam coming from the sidewalk to our 1st destination Central Park. As you can imagine, the park was quite empty apart from a few hardy dog walkers and joggers, so we set off to explore. As we meandered around the park we enjoyed the peace and quiet of the early morning and was even able to take lots of photos without people spoiling the background. I was surprised how quickly the park filled up over the next couple of hours with dog walkers, cyclists and joggers. We made it to the north end of the park and after a welcome break at Dunkin Donuts, we managed to grab a photo with a fine officer from the NYPD. We made our way south towards the American museum of natural history and enjoyed the autumn sun and stunning skyline that is Manhattan. We spent the next 4 hours in the museum, enjoying the dinosaurs, dioramas and even the geology exhibits (sorry). We did have a first however. We decided to have lunch in the food court (found by following the stickers on the floor.) As we were examining all the delicious options in front of us, Anna noticed it was priced per weight ! You fill your plate and they weigh it to tell you how much it will cost (we had pulled pork, rice and salad, the lightest option). We left the museum and went back into the park. Sunday afternoon was in full swing and the dog walkers and joggers had been replaced by families and a lot of tourists. People watching is a fun pastime, we stopped to listen to a trio of musicians playing by Bethesda Fountain, watched the New York roller skating society having a disco and sat on Sheep's Meadow watching the world go by. Then back to the hotel after a slice of pizza and a very expensive Christmas decoration.
