Still my favorite TV moment ever.

I keep thinking about how the writers managed make Kurt depict every single gay stereotype their is. They didn't even try to subvert any of the stereotypes, either. I don't understand how people could think that Kurt was progressive in anyway except for being out in high school. Now that I have deleted my glee blog and stepped far, far away from the glee and chris colfer fandoms, I have to laugh at how incredibly bad of a character Kurt was.

Kurt was a massive stereotype, and note that his stans all shipped him with every other gay stereotype on the show as well? Either they wanted him to turn one of the straight guys (closeted gay stereotype/predatory gay stereotype), or they shipped him with Dave (closeted and self hating gay stereotype), Sebastian (slutty/sexual predator gay stereotype), or Chandler or Elliott (flamboyant gay stereotypes). The only exception was Adam, because he never even got enough personality to become a stereotype.

Meanwhile they all hated Blaine who subverted a lot of stereotypes, and was actually a pretty progressive gay character for a prime time show. I can’t think of many others that introduced out gay teen characters and had them be happy and confident with that despite all of the other struggles in their lives. But I guess the writers (and kurt stans) prefer to follow the same offensive stereotypes again and again.

Kurt was an awful character, because he was just a young version of Ryan Murphy, who we know is an awful person IRL. It’s not surprising his self insert Gary Stu was completely intolerable.

Wow… this post is so awful that it’s rather hard to decide where to begin…

First of all, the level of disdain that you’re showing for any gay character that doesn’t fit neatly into what you think is desirable or appropriate is rather disgusting. That for you, only straight-passing “nice” gay characters are worthy of portrayal, and that if a character is flamboyant (Kurt & Elliot), closeted/confused (Dave) or “slutty” (Sebastian), they are poor examples and must be seen in a negative light. You, of course, ignore Blaine’s less than sterling qualities. That while he might be “straight passing” (and only in the Glee universe would anyone think that Blaine would be such), he was selfish, a cheater, manipulative and self-centered to the point where it’s amazing that he didn’t walk around with shit in his hair all day because his head was so far up his own ass. 

As for flamboyant, you apparently completely missed Blaine’s wardrobe the instant he left the Warblers, because he dressed like a color-blind Pee Wee Herman clone (with his bow ties and high waters). Elliot was a glam rocker type and outside of his stage persona was hardly “flamboyant”. Kurt’s wardrobe ranged from the extremely fashion forward to absolutely normal (and it’s telling that his NYC wardrobe was infinitely more “masculine” than the nursing home wardrobe that Blaine sported most of the time).

You also choose to ignore that while Kurt’s character might have been written with a lot of traits that we often take as stereotypically “gay”, that the show and Chris spent an enormous amount of time and storylines subverting those stereotypes. And that Kurt became recognized as one of the strongest and most confident of characters. He stood up to bullies, knew who he was as a man and didn’t need to be reassured at every turn that he had value as a person. 

If there was a character who was a Gary Stu, it certainly wasn’t Kurt. Kurt was the guy who had to fight for every little thing he got. He fought for recognition of his talent, for every goal he tried to achieve and for the right to just exist and be himself. He got absolutely nothing handed to him and each of his wins, no matter how small, were hard struggles. Contrast that to Blaine, who seemed to get everything he sought simply be existing. In some ways, Blaine was even more of a Special Snowflake than Rachel was since she at least had some talent to justify some of her special treatment.

Blaine, as far as being a character, was little more than a cardboard cutout devoid of layers or nuances. That is partly due to the writing (since he was written to be the kind of guy that Ryan Murphy wanted to fuck) and due to a large degree to Darren’s crap acting. Darren was completely incapable of giving Blaine any nuances that Chris, Max, Grant and Adam were able to give their characters on their worst days. Unlike Kurt, Blaine never matured or grew as a person because Darren wasn’t capable of letting us see that he was more than the gay bro-dude that you seem so enamored with. 

And it’s telling that when Glee is referred to as producing an iconic gay character, it’s never Blaine that’s brought up. It’s Kurt, for all his strength and complexity that you ignore and gloss over. And if Blaine is mentioned at all, it’s because of Klaine and his connection to Kurt. On his own, Blaine was little more than a badly dressing human jukebox who’s only impact due entirely to his relationship with the character that you show so little regard for. So stick that in your pipe…

To defend an Anon. Specifically, this Anon, who tried to reason with mleigh:

It’s cute how Michelle threw out some half-assed (”Because I SAID SO!!11!!”) answer, backed by only her “word” and no actual facts whatsoever, and then tried to distract from her utter bullshit with pretty pictures of Chris. She also obviously has a very hard time distinguishing between CHRIS (looking devastatingly hot in leather, above) and KURT. (looking pissed off in an episode of Glee, where he was a main CHARACTER)  But is anyone surprised?

Anyway, moving on. Anon is quite correct. Spencer Liff , who so thoughtfully documented the New Year’s Camp Podwall outing he attended with Chris and Chris’ boyfriend Will:

Spencer was, indeed, the “Lead” Choreographer (credited as “Musical Staging“) and he was brought onto the project BY Neil Patrick Harris, FOR Neil Patrick Harris:

“Liff was brought on that project by star Neil Patrick Harris, a fan of SYTYCD who had previously tapped Liff to choreograph dance numbers for his sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.“ X

See, Spencer is a very talented, very busy boy. He’s in demand and doing a ton of projects. So, he worked, as the Anon stated, almost exclusively with NPH. He was credited, rightfully, as the “lead” or “head” and the Associate Choreographer, Paul McGill, (Wow, Michelle managed to get THAT right, at least) did the work and rehearsals with the other Hedwig actors. As a professional courtesy, Spencer would obviously meet with each actor, as he did with Darren. Darren got what amounted to basically a meet-and-greet with Spencer and, of course, the obligatory photo op. Broadway.com, of course, featured that moment:

Now, it may just be me, but something like this generally doesn’t result in a BFFs5eva relationship. You know, something at least in the realm of those that get you an invite to a very exclusive NYE trip to Miami. But that’s just me. ;)

As for Paul McGill, he spent plenty of time with Darren:

As for the Anon’s assertion that Darren “flirted” with Paul, we’re going to have to agree to disagree there. I can’t see straight, dudebro, “bullying is something people make up in their minds”, “Trevor isn’t for queer people it’s for PEOPLE”, Darren Criss flirting with a man. I will agree, however, that Darren will most likely do anything it takes to stay relevant and keep himself from sliding into well-deserved obscurity.

So, yeah, here’s how to put forth a theory and actually back it up with, Y’know, facts and sources. I sincerely wish that Michelle’s (and Lynne’s) dwindling number of sheeple would simply take the time a just a bit of initiative to ask these CrissColfer den mothers for proof and maybe question most of the batshit tripe they spew, rather than simply swallowing and spreading ignorance and bullshit. It would certainly serve them in real life. But, again, not holding my breath.

So, six minute cameo rather than an actual role and oh man, he still can’t act.

I dunno, there’s just something… off… about his timing. His emphasis is always on the wrong word or at the wrong time or the pauses between words is too long, and it makes him sound stilted and wooden. And his movements tend to be a distraction rather than a part of the character. In this instance you can actually see him ‘thinking’ too much rather than acting the character. The girl was good, in that standard obnoxious character way, and Kathy Bates is Kathy Bates. He did not look good beside them… but it was only six minutes, I guess.

Based on what you said here, it sounds like his delivery was similar to the incident back on Glee, when he was playing Bozo, and got that call about a bear being in Dave’s apartment. It would’ve been great material in better hands, but the while time it sounded like he was bored af and was reading the lines from cue cards only a few feet from his face.

Actually, yes, that’s it. He always sounds bored as well because he just doesn’t get how to speak the actual lines and sometimes it even seems like he hasn’t even bothered to understand them as well as in relation to whatever character he’s playing. I sense that his acting might have been, or be a little better on stage because he has to over-expand himself there (certainly what I saw of his Hedwig wasn’t great but was actually better than his tv or film work). I’m not saying he should fall into the trap of over-acting on screen but he often falls into the trap of under-acting instead to the point where you actually sometimes miss his lines. There’s just no instinct in him to find the right balance and so I don’t think he’ll ever be a really good actor. But he’s probably better off on stage where it’s not so up close, I guess. Don’t know if any of this makes sense but it does in my head ;-)

Yep, have to agree, he just can’t find the balance - he either overacts grossly or he underacts when he should be showing a bit more emotion. In Glee I think he more often overacted, particularly when angry or singing, but in the AHS thing I think he underacted… well, maybe that was the right choice and could have worked for that character but with his line reading just all over the place, it didn’t work at all. Basically, he can’t act very well at all and I really don’t think he’ll ever improve. He just doesn’t get it.

Showing Darren in a trailer would not be method for attract viewers anyway because most people don't know who he is. It only makes sense to show a guest actor in the promo when it is someone who is much known (if it is to attract viewers). Outside of Glee and Starkid fandom Darren is only a blip on the radar. Only his stans act like he is as big as Beyonce.

Yup. Totally agree. Only Darren’s stans (and his sugar daddies) actually believe that Darren is some kind of huge draw.

Putting him in the trailer probably would have made more people want to tune out than it would have made people want to turn in to see him.  

Truth be told, they could have cast any young no-name actor in Hollywood to play the role.  It was a minimal role, and it did need or warrant a guest star.  It was just Sugar Daddy Ry Ry giving his favorite a bit job.

Classic example of different rules when Darren is involved. They can shout from the highest roof top about what great allies they are, but given proof that Chris is with someone other than Darren, and they attack. 

Not surprising consider there favorite Darren likes to go on and on about what a great ally he is, but then turn around to pose for inappropriate pictures and make offensive and homophobic statements (that he and his fans often pass off as jokes). 

Darren and his stans deserve each other.
