I think your threads experience is a great example of how sometimes we maybe just need to take a leap and just try things out for ourselves without the opinion of others. If what you've seen speaks to you, give it a go. Honestly, it was such a great show. Don't let your fandom experience take that away from you.

I’m sorry you had that experience with the heated rivalry fandom, it’s such a shame because as a queer man I find it to be really good representation. Whilst the book was written by a woman, the director and some of the actors are queer men and you can tell they put a lot of effort into respectful portrayals. All of the main characters have nuanced journeys and experiences that are told really well for such a short series. I totally get being turned off from watching something because of the fandom though, that always sucks.

Heated rivalry fandom ??? More like heated rivalry CULT. And every reply was a middle aged white suburban mom too, fyi. Obviously the people here on tumblr are different, but WTF?! Are they stupid?! Are they just fucking crazy?!
Needless to say I will NOT be watching heated rivalry. The fandom tells me alllllllllllll I need to know about the show. And nobody even confirmed that it wasn’t stereotypical 🥴 they just glazed it…
For a second I didn’t realize it meant “high” as in a stoner–I thought “High Geologist” was like a rank of geologist or something and he was insulted you would challenge him to naming stones
Hot take: this movie isn't half bad. I actually really enjoyed it- and I'm pretty critical when it comes to movies.
I had my issues; Sokka being solely comedy, Suki having a split second of screen time, certain characters just plain not being written right...the denied? Questionable.
But overall? Good movie. Beautiful visuals and soundtrack, it kept me interested, and connected Atla to Lok very well.
Tagah was a really cool villain, actually. I thought so, at least. His ending was beautiful, and while I could tell he was going to be a villain, I really enjoyed when he was "good" at the beginning. He was believable as a villain and I honestly want to see more of him.... though he's dead now. So not really possible?
I really loved all the Kataang we got to see, too. (Sorry Zutara shippers) I feel like their relationship is just so important to the story and it was nice that Katara was an important factor in the movie. (She could've been more front and center, but Aang IS the sole focus here.) Katara got plenty of badass moments, my only complaint is we didn't really see much attitude from her, which is pretty important for her character.
That leads me to my biggest complaint with the movie, and basically the only REAL problem I have with it, is the portrayal of the Gaang.
They were all so? Flat? So backround-charactery. It felt kinda off. Sokka actually had not a SINGLE serious moment in the entire movie. He's so much more than comedic relief? And that's all he was used for.
Zuko had like five lines, which is strange for him. Zuko isn't exactly QUIET. C'mon guys.
Toph was all badassery, which....very HER, but she's also an amazing teacher and a pretty wise figure. Most of her lines were also comedic relief, lol.
Suki literally was not there. Y'all. She IS PART OF THE GAANG. SHE IS ON TEAM AVATAR??? LIKE??? WHERE TF WAS SHE???
However despite my complaints, the main theme of the movie, and Aang, were written fairly well. I liked Aang's voice acting, I liked how he was portrayed- 👌
He was the one you'd call when you wanted someone trustworthy to water your plants and watch your house over vacation. He was stacked in volunteer hours at the soup kitchen, and sometimes just dropped by the local pet shop to play with the dogs and cats because he didn't want them to feel alone (which ended up with him getting very attached and naming them all and then also getting his first job... it's a long story but one John loves to tell :)
But war and life, like it does for everyone, changed him.
On the outside, he was rough around the edges. Rugged and jaded, not that sweet kid knocking on your door offering to mow your lawn.
But the people that knew John, and I mean, really knew him? Know that sweet guy is still in there.
