Neil saw the slap coming from a mile away. Offering Christy a sort of smug smile, he reached out a burly hand and caught her dainty wrist, gently but firmly holding her arm still, while taking care not to cause her any pain.
He gave a little chuckle â a low rumble that erupted deep from within â and, with a mirthful twinkle in his eyes, he jokingly chastised her, saying, âNow, now, Christy⌠Itâs nae so dire as to have to resort to violence, aye?â
After a moment, Neil let go of her wrist, leaving Christy free to do as she would.
Narrowing his eyebrows a bit, the doctor gave a hint of a frown and asked, âIt wasna so bad as all that, now, was it?â
You see, Neil had rather enjoyed the kiss, himself â and he was fairly certain that Christy had, too (even if she wasnât about to admit it).
âNot that bad?!â Christy silently fumed, unable to meet the doctorâs gaze. âNo... It hadnât been bad at all!â she silently lamented -- and she wasnât entirely sure how to feel about this -- about Neil -- about the two of them.
Yes, the kiss had been -- surprisingly -- quite nice, but it had also been completely unexpected (though, not entirely unwelcome, which only served to add to Christyâs rising sense of confusion and discomfort). She was struggling with this because she had feelings for Neil, and there was no way she could deny it any longer -- and, she didnât feel that she was ready for what would likely come next.
She hadnât planed for this... Sheâd never chased after Neil or given him any reason to think that she might have feelings for him... never set out to win his heart. Heck, sheâd never even intended to like the man!
And, yet...
Christy thought sheâd had her whole life planned out, and sheâd just been proven wrong, and she felt a rush of emotions hit her all at once. She wanted to scream... to cry... to... to ...
... to rush back into his arms and have him kiss her all over again!
âNeil, I...â Slowly, Christy turned her still-crimson face up to meet the doctorâs gaze. âIâm sorry -- I need some air!â she blurted out, and then she darted out of the room to the missionâs wrap-around porch. She leaned heavily against the railing and stared at the distant mountain tops, while she tried to clear her head and regain her composure.

The schoolteacher wore her heart on her sleeve â even if she didnât mean to â which usually made her true feelings quite known to anyone paying enough attention, and based on her reaction, it seemed that Christy really would miss him. Neil smiled, feeling quite pleased at the thought of being missed Christy Huddleston.
âOch,â he uttered, âShouldnât be more than three days âtill Iâm back,â he advised, already eager to already be back on his way home to Cutter Gap from Low Gap.
This was probably going to be a very, very long three days.
âWellâŚâ Neil thoughtfully went on, âThat is, provided no medical emergency breaks out, ken?â he asked, knowing that sheâd understand. âAnâ, should that happen, Iâll send word tâ thâ mission, aye?â
Christy sort of forced a smile and resignedly replied, âAlright. Iâll see you in a few days, then.â She really was going to miss him.Â
âWhy donât you stop by the mission on your way home -- rest up and have some supper with us?â she heard herself ask -- except, what she was really asking was for him to stop by to see her upon his return to Cutter Gap -- to have dinner with her. Everyone else was incidental, really.
It wasnât at all an odd request, though. Neil did often drop in on his way in or out of the area, after all. Granted, it was usually to visit with Miss Alice, or to replenish the missionâs medical supplies, but still...
âIâll set a place for you,â Christy said, dripping with optimism, while she ensured that he would, indeed, be welcome and expected.

âI only worked there because I wanted to make sure I could get out.â
âDrink this. It will help you sleep as it helped some of the others sleep. No dreams.â
âI heard you were shot. Do you need my help with your hair? Or your shoes?â
âI wouldnât blame you for being curious.âÂ
âHow will we conduct ourselves in this time of conflict as people who pursue peace?â
âThey donât care about efficiency, they care about agreement.â
âIt makes them care, it makes them kind. I think thatâs beautiful.â
âI donât trust anyone anymore.â
âIâm a naturally curious person. Donât change the subject.â
âYouâre nothing but an arrogant, lying piece of garbage.â
âWeâre all right, you know. You and me. Okay?â
âNothing else is alright. But we are.â
âSleep, Iâll fight the bad dreams off if they come to get you.â
âItâs not like youâre particularly stable these days.â
âGive it to me, or so help me, I will kill you in your sleep.â
âPeace. Yes, Iâm sure it will be very peaceful when we are all either dead or cowering in submission under the threat of mind control or stuck in an endless simulation.â
âPut the gun down. I have very good aim, and Iâm betting that you donât.â
âI helped you when no one else would, remember?â
âChoices can be made again.â
âI am not in the mood for guessing.â
âDonât you dare try to apologize. This is not something you can bandage with a word or two and some hugging.â
âI am his family. I am permanent. You are only temporary.âÂ
âIâm sorry, but we were instructed to arrest you upon your arrival.â
âCan you please calm down? Youâre making me nervous.â
âBecause I was selfish.â
âBecause I realized that one of us would have to kill the other, and I didnât want to kill him.â
âI shot him, while he was under the simulation. I killed him. He was going to kill me, but I killed him. My friend.â
âSo I figured, if I donât look so much like a girl, maybe they wonât look at me that way.â
âI think you could have used being underestimated to your advantage.â
âYou donât always have to smack people in the face with how strong you are.â
âWe canât just kill everyone.â
âNo people means no one left to create prosperous conditions.â
âItâs not your job to ask questions.â
âWeâll decide which ones to kill and which ones to bring back later.â
âThereâs a staircase about three yards away. Iâll tell you when no one is watching, and then you have to run, understand?â
âI donât understand how you could possibly be stupid enough to come up here with no gun.â
âWhatâs the matter? Afraid of a little girl?â
âIâm not stupid. That little-girl act may have worked on me before, but it wont work again.â
âYouâre the best attack dog theyâve got. Which is why Iâm sure youâll be put down soon enough.â
âThe rest of you are to be executed.â
âYou can put the knife down now.â
âI might throw up if I have to answer that one more time.â
âI donât have a bullet in my head, do I? So Iâm good.â
âYour jaw is so swollen you look like you have a wad of food in your cheek.â
âIâm not allowed to ask if youâre okay?â
âWhat makes you think I didnât have a gun?â
âItâs not brave, choosing the position you were in yesterday. Itâs beyond stupid - itâs suicidal. Donât you have any regard for your own life?â
âKilling you is not the worst thing they can do to you.â
âI donât want to stop you, I want you to stop yourself.â
âWould you like me to tell you your crimes? Or would you like to list them yourself?â
âDo I deserve to die?â
âWe have the right to execute you.âÂ
âWe donât take requests from criminals.â
âSo you can live with the guilt of knowing you usurped me and shot me in the head.â
âThere wont be any guilt.â
âBe brave.âÂ
âThey promised safety to anyone who wants it.â
âThis is not a negotiation. It is a warning.â
âEveryone two days until one of you delivers yourself to headquarters, this will happen again.â
âIâm not really in the mood to feel more guilt right now. So go away, please.â
âYou told me you had to do it, or he would have shot you, and I didnât believe you. I believe you now, and⌠Iâm going to forgive you.â
âI love you.â
âYouâll have to do better than that.â
âGet up. We have to run.â
âSpare me your blubbering, okay?â Â
âSometimes, personality has nothing to do with a personâs choice.â
âI donât mean to be insensitive.â

With a wide grin â Neil couldnât help it, you see â he smiled down at his lovely lady friend.
âMistletoe,â he jovially explained, sort of giving an upwards nod at the sprig pinned to the ceiling above them.
âI hope ye dinnae mind, Christy â âleast, nae too muchâŚâ He simply could not wipe that grin off of his face. Neil had been looking forward to kissing Cutter Gapâs young teacher for some time, now â and, until now, there had not been such a convenient excuse as mistletoe.
âMind?!â Christy exclaimed with disbelief, outraged that she had been so taken advantage of. He hadnât even asked her permission! Heâd just held that sprig of greenery over her head -- and conveniently out of her sight -- and just went for it.
But... sheâd secretly rather enjoyed it.
Visibly upset about the candid kiss -- or, was it that she was excited by it? It was hard to say, for both emotions tended to leave one with a ruddy face, fiercely sparkling eyes, an increased heart rate, lungs heaving with breath, and a rather irritating inability to remain coherent -- the schoolteacher raised her right hand and moved to slap the doctor for daring to be so bold.
Her speedy reply was all Neil needed to hear to fuel him on before he hit the road for the next several days.
Sheâd M I S S him!
Of course, sheâd backpedaled a bit, too, and tried to clarify that everyone in Cutter Gap will miss him while heâs gone⌠but, she wasnât fooling anyone, least of all the doctor.
However, Neil was determined to be a gentleman and not press the issue. He didnât wish to upset Christy, nor otherwise make her uncomfortable.
⌠But, then again⌠Heâd caught wind of Davidâs proposal earlier this morning, thanks to Creed Allen and some other of the children who had dropped by the doctorâs cabin. Theyâd been worrying that David would take Christy away from Cutter Gap after they got married, and â most notably â the perceptive little buggers could tell that their teacher wasnât really in love with the preacher.
Neil could tell, too.
Why Christy couldnât â or wouldnât â see it, was rather a bit of a mystery.
âWell⌠Good,â he said, wearing a wide, sure grin. âIâll try tâ hurry back, then,â he promised. âWouldnât want tâ make anyone worryâŚâ
Her cheeks flared with redness almost as soon as the words had left her mouth. There was no way the doctor would have missed it -- he was far too astute for that.
At least his reaction had been gracious, and Neil hadnât pressed her for further answers regarding her feelings; though, that smile of his was far from what one might call âmodestâ. He was clearly reveling in the fact that -- without even actually trying to -- heâd rattled her, and it seemed that he was enjoying watching her squirm.
âOh,â Christy managed to utter, blinking dazedly in the sunlight, while thinking desperately of something she could say to shift their topic of conversation onto something a bit less personal. âOf course.â She offered Neil a kind, closed-lipped smile and tried to will the blush on her face to fade -- to no avail.
âAnd, how long do you mean to be gone?â Christy asked. It wasnât that sheâd be pining away for him in his absence, but... it would be good to know when she could count on his return -- in case anyone in Cutter Gap had need of their local physician, of course. Not because sheâd miss him.
But... she would miss him. Very much. And, not because she was in need of any doctoring, either -- she wasnât, in fact -- Christy was as healthy as a horse.
My muse is having a nightmare and is reacting physically to it by screaming...
⌠send âItâs okay, itâs just a dreamâ for my museâs reaction to being woken up by yours.
