China: Rainbow Mountains at Zhangye Danxia National Geologic Park Image credit: imaginechina.com ‘Geology: sandstone and siltstones. Deposited before the Himalayas were formed. Sand and slit contains iron and trace minerals that are largely responsible for the colouring. Process: Collision of tectonic plates (Indian and Eurasian, 55mio years ago) uplifted mountains and exposed sedimentary rocks. Weathering and erosion removed the overlying layers of continental siliciclastic rocks and exposed underlying formations with different mineralogy and chemistry. Precipitated groundwater and trace minerals. The primary colour is a deep red sandstone, iron oxide coating and cementation between the sandstone grains. Like rust on metal. Weathering, mixed with water and oxygen oxidises elemental iron into iron oxide, which is notable for its dark red colouring. The Rainbow Mountains are largely characterised by iron oxide staining of its sandstone. Oxidised limonite or goethite will produce brown or yellow staining of sandstones, magnetite can form black staining of sandstones. If there is iron sulfide present, you will get a metallic yellow colour imparted by the sulfur. Meanwhile, green colouring is often due to chlorite or iron silicate clays.’ ~ Forbes
Cosmic wings of the Butterfly Nebula by NASA Hubble. ‘This nebula formed after a star like our Sun used up most of its fuel and shed its outer layers of material. Planetary nebulae really have nothing to do with planets! They were misnamed by early astronomers looking through small telescopes when they thought that these objects looked like planets.’ Image credits: X-ray: NASA/CXC/RIT/J.Kastner; Optical: NASA/ESA/AURA/STScI
