Hello! I just wondering about your prints, doesn't it have to be CMYK in order for the colours to be shown well? If you work only in SAI (which doesn't support CMYK), how does the colour of your prints turn out well? Do you edit it in Photoshop, if so, how? Sorry if this has been asked before, and thank you for reading!
Heyo! Sorry for this belated response. Cmyk printing is something I’m still trying to figure it out myself so I can only give tips from personal experience. Yes, I only work in SAI and it doesn’t support CMYK unfortunately. I always edit in Photoshop afterwards. What you can do it ideally test print your images at home with your own printer or there are some online printing companies that allow you to order actual hard copy proofs of your images so you can edit accordingly which is super helpful!
In Photoshop (I’m using Photoshop CS6), there are several ways to do this. One method is to covert image to CMYK mode under Image > Mode > CMYK Color. This usually merges all your layers though.
Another is if you’re working in RGB profile you can go under View > Proof colors. This sets the profile you want to simulate or test with overriding normal display color management so basically it’s showing you the CMYK colors as it would print on paper. Not super exact but gives you an idea. It appears duller than RGB profile.
You can edit your colors as and keep checking the Proof Colors option on and off to try to get it to how you like.
Something to keep in mind while you’re working with cmyk printing is the gamut colors. Gamut is basically the range of colors that a color system can display or print. Most RGB colors are too vibrant, thus out-of-gamut, and are unprintable.
You can see which color won’t print under View > Gamut Warning. Click and Unclick to see which colors are out of range.
You can also color pick a color in your drawing, open up the color picker and it should give you this warning icon that shows you it is out of range. Clicking on it will give you the CMYK substitute which is usually much duller. In regards to my illustration, the bright blue color of the sky will be replaced automatically with a color replaced within the CMYK scale if it prints.
Clicking View > Gamut Warning while in color picker, shows you exactly where the printable color range is (image below). So in regards to the blue sky of my sousuke drawing, that color will not print.
OH Another thing… my colleague gave me some tips with Color Settings when I printed out assignments for school. In Photoshop, go to Edit > Color Settings and select Adobe RGB (1998) for RGB. It provides a larger gamut range for RGB which helps when you’re converting to CMYK! And it prints fairly true to what I see on my screen! YAhoo!!!
Adjusting colors is complicated and it takes some experience to get right! T_T GOOD LUCK! I hope this was somewhat helpful! There are way more helpful links and explanations online too so yeah don’t…take my word on it because I’m still learning myself…. Eep.
Happy 5/6 Day!!! ʚ♡⃛ɞ(ू•ᴗ•ू✿)
I made a little tutorial for my supporters over patreon some time ago of how I generally get my base colors done in SAI (you can do this in other programs too!), and decided to share it here too!
It’s really simple, but it has saved me from a lot of work before! I hope you guys find it helpful! ( ‘ v ‘//)
Finally!! It took me forever! (a week) Here’s a video of me painting, it is as boring as it sounds ^^u, I hope you like it anyways :D
Everything that there is to know about the process is in the description of the video, other than that, there’s nothing but choosing brushes and drawing/painting.
ATTENTION ALL ARTISTS JESUS CHRIST
THERES THIS WEBSITE CALLED IRADUKAI AND ITS FUCKIN AMAZING BC VARIOUS JAPANESE ARTISTS POST THEIR STEP BY STEP ON FINISHED WORKS STARTING FROM SKETCH UP TO FINISHING TOUCHES
IT ALSO SAYS WHICH ART PROGRAM THE ARTIST USED FOR CONVENIENCE PURPOSES YEAA
ITS IN JAPANESE THO BUT ITS MOSTLY IN PICTURES SO ITS NOT TOO HARD TO UNDERSTAND
YOURE WELCOME
So remember how I was spazzing about drawpile earlier today? Just tried it out right now and … SUCH A GOOD.
It’s like if OpenCanvas 0.86 got an upgrade to the modern world.
It’s free, it can record your art, there are actual layers and actual brushes, and uvu I’m just so happy. Like, you can use it as a drawing program on the regular, BUT ALSO you can invite your friends to draw or to watch.
(Like, you can do that fun thing where one person pencils, another person inks, and another person colors, etc etc. Or just draw and chat.)
Seriously – download it (it’s got Mac, Windows, and even Linux versions!) Then we can draw stuff together!! :DDD
DO IT AND COME PLAY WITH ME!!! <333 Seriously, it’s like pchat of old days except with a way more beefier tools, colours and layers section. It’s a collaborative Painter Sai. It’s fekkin’ awesome, is what!
REALLY IMPORTANT - NEW PAYPAL UPDATE - PLEASE READ
THIS NEEDS A HELLA SIGNAL BOOST - PLEASE SPREAD THIS UP
EVERYONE needs to start using Invoices. This is very important. Paypal has recently updated their TOS and it’s something that everyone should pay attention to. “10.3h If you violate the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, … you will be liable to PayPal for the amount of PayPal’s damages caused by your violation … You acknowledge and agree that $2,500.00 USD per violation … is presently a reasonable minimum estimate of PayPal’s actual damages … PayPal may deduct such damages directly from any existing Balance in the offending Account or any other Account you control.” DO NOT SEND PAYMENTS AS “GIFTS” You will be risking your commissioners account and that is really really bad. Artists, REQUEST PAYMENT THROUGH INVOICES. It lets YOU control how money is sent. Commissioners, DO NOT SEND PAYMENT unless you send it through “for goods and services.” If your artist requests ‘send as gifts’ BEFORE you send payment, tell them about the $2,500 fine per violation, as they probably do not know about it. Yes, paypal fees suck, but it’s better to have a few dollars missing than to get fined $2,500 for a $20 purchase.
PAYPAL IS TRYING TO SLIP THE RUG UNDER US. Or they may have said this and just no one read about it or noticed/knew.
OKAY SO BEFORE YOU SEND ANY MONEY FOR THAT AWESOME COMMISSION YOU WANT TO BUY FROM THAT AWESOME ARTIST. PLEASE STOP AND READ THIS.
Paypal changed the look of how you will fill out information and send money. Thus, you need to be super careful. Don’t go all willy nilly through and be like “Yeah yeah yeah send” you need to stop when you see this screen right away.
Before you proceed, you will first notice one major thing: your address is showing. What you need to do if you are ordering a DIGITAL WORK (aka, it is being sent to you via the interwebz) is you need to click on your address and there around be a drop down menu of 3 (or more) options:
No address needed
Your Current Address
+ Add a new shipping address
Be sure to select “No address needed”, it is very important that you do. If you leave your address in there, Paypal will assume that you are to receive a physical package. A physical package which needs proof that exists physically. Paypal will want the artist to provide shipping labels and tracking info on said package. This is bad, very, very bad. Artists can get in trouble if they cannot provide these things.
Please, if an artist asks to send you back your money so that you can send it again correctly, do not be offended. You are paying them to do your commission, how can they do your commission with no money?
Reblog this, send this around, if you want to make a proper tutorial go ahead, I hope this was clear enough as it is.
I also made a visual look (click for full view) at where you can select “no shipping required” for both the classic and current views of Paypal’s site. ^^
These pictures are from Dec 2014 so they are a bit old, but a while ago i ordered some charms from ChillyPig because I’m always interested in new companies operating in the clear acrylic space XD.
This is a comparison between Chilly Pig and Ink it Labs, with my charm designs. I paid for these at the market rate, so they are not free promo/gifts. There were also other finishes included but I’ve picked the most similar to compare. I also can’t sell them because the colors and finishes are different from my regular product XD (make use of that info as you will lol)
A few notes:
The colors are different because I use Ink it Labs spot colors, and Chilly Pig does not use the same palette, so the colors came out as they were on my monitor which is pretty accurate (just not accurate to my intention). If you have all your files set up for ink it labs palette, you would have to redo them so keep that in mind.
The gloss in these chillypig charms spill over the edge of the images but since then chillypig’s owner has let me know they re calibrated the machine to make it fit the image. The original spill over was intentional as the owner thought people would prefer them so it’s not a mistake on their part.
Chillypig’s site currently offers only extra white or no white, no more 3 2 or 1 white layers noted here, I haven’t since got samples so i don’t know how opaque their one white layer is! EDIT: My friend squidyjen did little comparison with their newer samples HERE
Otherwise! Compare this review with my old comparisons: Zap 1, Zap 2 and i would personally say ChillyPig definitely is more worthy of comparison to Ink it. The printing DPI looks similar, the white edge is about the same (slightly peaking out but sharp and not.. pixelly or feathered out like zap) and the edge clarity equal as well.
The only worry I have is on one of the chilly pig charms i happened to notice that there’s a captured dust speck in the gloss. I circled it in red on the 3rd picture but it’s visible in the second picture too. I worry because basically I’ve had Ink it Labs throw out entire sheets of charms because of captured dust like this on their own accord, they have impeccable standards and although this is probably an anomoly that just slipped past CP early on, it will be something CP has to keep an eye on.
The price difference for the largest quantity of charms is about 20 cents per charm in the end.
For me I’m sticking with Ink It especially since all my colors would be redone, but also because I know their standards first hand and don’t mind paying a little more for that :). However again, ChillyPig is definitely a closer competitor that’s also based in the USA and hopefully these home grown companies can motivate each other to produce their best work!
