ethel approached macy first because she thought she had god-given beauty. and then the more macy listened to and validated her, the more ethel’s thoughts evolved. she thought her and macy would live a long holy life and die by each other’s side before the massacre and ethel’s suicide happened. just before ethel died, she wished she would’ve stabbed herself to death and bled out in macy’s arms so she could at least die warm

shelley raised ethel more than their parents did

however, ‘raised’ is being used very loosely here. he had a much bigger role in her life, he was more present. her parents were emotionally neglecting her, and once she’s in psychosis and feeling severely trauma bonded with shelley, she starts to tell people that he raised her.

ethel’s religious delusions were ultimately fueled by guilt. she prayed that shelley would leave her alone and thought she was responsible for his death in a way. and she never really wanted him to die. so to cope with this she starts to believe that he became a saint and that he never died, he was just saved.

they’re both violent. they’re both very violent.

but shelley has no justification. he knows that what he does is wrong but he has no care in the world. he thinks there’s no point in being good, nobody really benefits from it according to him. his sadism is the only thing that can truly bring him pleasure.

ethel, however, is doing everything to justify it. she mercilessly kills in the name of religion. she does it all for god. she firmly believes that what she’s doing is good. god is pleased, her big brother is pleased, so she must be doing something good.
