Behold my bad gaming logic/functions and fun designs!!

They don't swap backstories or anything, this leans more into the in stars and time universe and qualities of them were just swapped. Stranger has the ability to forget in exchange for more strength while Siffrin has the ability to remember snippets of two vague pasts that make him more determined.

They kinda share pasts with each other, they both lost a family they didn't really know all that well but miss it anyways, they are familiar with the consequences that come with remembering and forgetting, and they have been in a place where time is still.
