Thinking about khrome
I already stated this before in one of my posts but I legit can’t imagine how lonely Jaxon has felt his entire life
His talent and genius already separates him from a lot of people (whether it be due to jealousy or the comparison between the person and him) but then we get to his personality. His carefree and easygoing attitude, the way he’s very blunt with what he says, his unpredictable nature, it’s a lot to keep track of. Especially when his nature clashes with other people so easily (including his friends or people who love him in general), Multi and Robin being examples since they’ve worked so hard to get to the top of the X while Jaxon had to do little to no effort.
And while Robin is pretty much the default person to understand Jaxon the most, even he can’t get understand Jaxon’s behavior at times and gets extremely frustrated.
Jaxon isn’t very good at communication either which makes it about a bajillion times more difficult for people to interact with him. Imagine losing to him with one hit and he’s celebrating and basking in the happiness of the bey battle, before running up to you and saying he wants to do that again. Imagine you scoff at him and swat his hand away and leave angrily. Maybe he’ll know what you’re feeling but not WHY you’re feeling it. In Jaxon’s mind he just thinks bey battles are fun and you two should keep on going because there’s endless outcomes. But now a person he could have fun with leaves his side.
It looked like Jaxon didn’t interact much with other kids his age when he was an itty bitty kid either. Ginro was the only person we’ve seen him hang around when Jaxon was tiny. And most of that time was spent training to become a good Blader and hone his skills (though it looks like it took little time for that to happen). So the chances of Jaxon interacting what society defines as “normal” are already low.
Not to mention we never saw where Jaxon left after his time with Ginro and before his time with Pendragon. I assume he was a loner wandering around having bey battles before he was recruited which means he also doesn’t have any ongoing or stable friendships by the time he joined Pendragon.
(We saw he had a phone in Episode 43 so I assume he had it before he joined Pendragon or else he could get lost. Plus there are many convenient apps on there, and Ciel was recruited onto Team Pendragon via a message from the team’s scout. A MESSAGE. So I will also assume Jaxon was recruited the same way. Jaxon was stated to have gone to the Amateur Arena in the first episode so he must’ve competed at one point to be noticed and then contacted or offered a spot on Pendragon later)
^ ALL THAT TO COME BACK TO THE PHONE POINT being that Jaxon always seems to notice when he gets a message (Episode 77 when his phone pings and he immediately checks it to see it’s Chrome) and he has never been shown to check it or keep in touch with anyone. So. No prior formed friendships I believe.
He hasn’t had a true mutual friendship with anyone until Persona came along and that makes me sad.
We also have to mention Jaxon’s time on Pendragon. He was also REALLY lonely then too.
When Chrome and Jaxon first interacted, Jaxon was happy because Chrome was super strong and Jaxon didn’t think he’d find anyone better to battle against. And when Chrome promised time to him he was very happy because well, Chrome wanted to spend time with him. And although this trait is applied more onto humans (though I don’t believe Jaxon is fully human), any living species really has the need to socialize and interact with others. It’s just in their nature. And Jaxon probably had that need deep within him that wasn’t satisfied until Chrome came along— a strong Blader, someone who liked Jaxon’s company, someone who’d understand Jaxon’s love for Blading. Because before anything, Chrome is also a Blader and he knows the thrill of it too! (though his focus is more on winning than having fun)
And then, Chrome became distant in his eyes. Interviews, exhibition matches, other matches, Chrome’s attitude once they reached the top and he didn’t wanna go anymore (not understanding Jaxon’s need to go higher)— Jaxon was left alone. What seemed like a promising life standing besides someone who would fulfill his needs and get the way he felt, was all a lie once Chrome started to get busy.
In Episode 43 we really see this a lot.
And it’s not like Jaxon only cared about Chrome just as a Blader— he really did care for Chrome. When Sigrid and Chrome did their interview then came out to Jaxon at the front waiting for them, he had sushi for all of them. Sushi. Think about that for a moment. Jaxon really loves sushi and we know he likes sharing it with others (specifically Robin though we saw that once instance of him shoving it in Multi’s mouth during the Blader Y fiasco). He brought sushi for Pendragon because he wanted to share a thing he liked with them. Plus, sushi represents happiness so in a way I think he was just trying to share his happiness among them, especially Chrome. Jaxon was sitting at an angle where he could talk to Chrome more easily despite being between Chrome and Sigrid. And although Jaxon’s priority was Blading, you gotta think about what we’ve already discussed. Past itty bitty Jaxon never had anyone like Chrome in his life. And again, Jaxon likes sharing what he loves with people he likes, so it makes sense for him to continuously yap about Blading.
So broken promise after broken promise, Jaxon felt lonelier and lonelier. He doesn’t know what’s going on. Chrome never tells him directly he should be doing his part of work for Pendragon, and Sigrid never explains any further what that has to do with Jaxon. She just says Chrome is making up for what Jaxon is lacking. But Jaxon clearly doesn’t understand because NO ONE IS EXPLAINING IT TO HIM. And why does someone need to explain it to him, you ask? Because he lacks SOCIAL SKILLS, he’s some flavor of neurodivergent (this alone contributes a lot to why he could be lonely too but that’s a whole other post), and he needs people to tell him things at face value because he thinks and acts differently than most people do.
So Jaxon is essentially being isolated from Chrome and he’s confused as to why, and Chrome is being very vague with what’s going on, and Jaxon has to pretend he’s okay with Chrome continuously lying to his face about having time for him. Jaxon feels like the person who once understood him so well and was a pillar of light is suddenly submerged in darkness and Jaxon can’t see Chrome as clearly as he could.
We have to add onto the fact that Sigrid also didn’t have much time for Jaxon since she’s also a supermodel. Handling two professions is not for the weak. And the times she does hang out with Jaxon, they don’t really click but they coexist in a way, you know? Jaxon was never as fascinated with her as he was with Chrome either.
Jaxon’s time on Pendragon was overall miserable the more he got into it. He still cares for Chrome up to this day but you can see how confused he gets and slightly pushed away with every action Chrome does. Especially during the Blader Y and Z incidents. Jaxon and Chrome had this weird bond that made Jaxon feel happy but lonely and due to all that conflict in his heart, it’s no wonder he asked Multi and Robin to not get in the way between him and Chrome.
Part of the reason I think Jaxon left Pendragon was because he was feeling lonely too. Some emotion has gotta be brewing deep inside you to quit your team like that so easily. I think Jaxon wanted some distance from Chrome because Chrome made him feel weird. Though that thought was overridden by the emotion of giddiness to battle the strongest Blader other than Jaxon himself. Like what they had at the start before everything got complicated.
Now his time with Persona. Jaxon clung onto Robin rather easily because Robin is basically the embodiment of fulfilling his needs (sushi chef, someone who never gives up, a Blader who can seriously become a threat, fun to battle) and because Robin wouldn’t lie like Chrome. Robin wants to battle? He’ll say sure! Robin doesn’t wanna battle? He’ll say no! Jaxon warmed up to Multi and immediately liked her because she was the type of person he could read well enough and she also usually got whatever he thought. During Invitation she basically translated what Jaxon said for Robin because she could understand his words. She figured out Jaxon wanted to lure Blader Y and Z out so that’s why he caused a whole panic across Xenon City.
So why, may you ask, does Jaxon Cross continue to feel lonely despite having two people he clearly adores who adore him equally back?
There’s a lot of reasons (like for anything else) but the main one is this; Robin and Multi will never understand how much Beyblade means to Jaxon.
Dubbed as “someone who was born to Blade” by Chrome himself, Jaxon’s purpose and whole existence in life revolves solely around Blading.
“Jaxon’s a monster who sold his soul to Blading.” — Ginro (Episode 88)
Something as grand as that cannot be overlooked. He doesn’t think there could be anything as fun as Blading and he loves having fun. Jaxon’s love for Blading cannot be understood by anyone, and I mean ANYONE in the Blading universe. Not Chrome, not Persona, not Ginro, not anyone. To some extent I believe Chrome could understand sacrificing his life for Blading (Shadow Pro stuff) but he doesn’t know. If Chrome couldn’t know, how could Robin and Multi?
This is especially prominent in Season 2. After Jaxon achieved his goal and his dream battle, he fell into a sort of… funk. But that was because he didn’t know what to aim for next in Blading and that was troubling to him because Blading is everything to Jaxon along with sushi. Robin thought Jaxon was worried about Chrome which hadn’t even popped into Jaxon’s mind. And when Jaxon started focusing on making the Ultimate Redbean and Cream Sushi, everyone was baffled. But that’s because they didn’t understand how much Jaxon cared for sushi along Blading. Episode 20 let us see how important both things were to him since Jaxon said he could do without anything else.
But that’s not the only time they’ve read him wrong and started to get him less and less. More and more, Jaxon has been misinterpreted in different ways. Even Tenka who was analyzing Jaxon all this time, couldn’t fully understand him. She didn’t get that he didn’t only care for himself. Robin didn’t get why Jaxon wasn’t worried for Multi. Multi didn’t get why Jaxon ran off or why it seemed so important for him.
Episode 77 really highlighted for me how far Jaxon had started to drift from Persona. During Jaxon and Robin’s short conversation before bed, Robin said he felt lonely without Multi and Jaxon pointed out that must be why he cried so many times. I have another post explaining why Robin felt lonely without Multi (I’ll find and link it later) but here’s the simplified version of my theory: Robin feels like Jaxon is acting in a way he can’t understand anymore and as hard as he tries to do so, Jaxon feels further away from his grasp, and that’s why when Multi leaves, Robin feels like he has no one to talk to about this. How does this relate back to Jaxon feeling lonely? Well: Robin feeling like Jaxon is isolated from Persona —> we view Jaxon’s actions/attitude —> oh crap it looks similar to Pendragon —> Jaxon is drifting —> he feels less understood and lonely.
Also while they were talking, Jaxon said “Aren’t you gonna ask what happened?” (Meetup with Chrome) which lets the viewer assume that Robin always asks and Jaxon is more than happy to respond. But this question points out more than anything how their relationship is straining. Jaxon WANTED Robin to ask. He craves to interact with someone. He doesn’t wanna feel the way he did back in Pendragon.
But it seems like that is what’s happening. Jaxon’s behaviors point to him being a bit more avoidant and evasive in Season 2 too. Remember when Robin was training with Reaper Incendio? Jaxon hesitated in another battle and stretched the truth saying that he needed to take a break. He didn’t want to speak what was truly on his mind lest it pushes Robin away even more and makes Jaxon feel more lonely even though Jaxon’s actions are causing him to push away those around him.
That’s another thing. In another post of mine, I pointed out how Chrome seems to put up a wall around him because he’s afraid of letting people in like he let in Jaxon and get himself emotionally hurt again. Well, I think Jaxon is doing the same thing here— though not entirely on purpose.
I think Jaxon’s beginning to realize the emotion he felt with Chrome is the same one occurring right now with Persona. And so that’s why he’s being more distant. Jaxon deep down probably thinks he couldn’t bear to feel that again. I mean, it made him so miserable to the point it became one of the reasons he left Pendragon and why Jaxon and Chrome have the relationship they do. I wouldn’t want TWO relationships like those with any person in my life— that’s emotionally draining. And for a person like Jaxon who always relies on his heart rather than on his mind/logic, that’s a heavy blow. Especially since he isn’t used to feeling negative things and just wants to have fun. This viewpoint is causing him to push people away and making him feel already lonelier than he already was.
I have two last points to point out Jaxon’s loneliness, though I didn’t know how to bring them up since they’re much shorter but also very important.
Blading means the world to Jaxon. That’s obvious. But have you ever thought why something means so much to a person? With Jaxon, most of you probably have. I personally don’t think I could crack the code but I think I know part of the reason why.
Has anyone been a consistent figure in Jaxon’s life? No. Everyone we’ve seen has only recently been in Jaxon’s life. Sure, Ginro came back, but quite a few years hace passed since Jaxon last saw him. Chrome and Jaxon have been on and off in their strained friendship… or whatever that is. Persona is always there for Jaxon but he’s been in a faraway land in his mind.
You know what HAS been consistently in Jaxon’s life though? Beyblade.
Jaxon always had Blading in his life. His source of fun and joy, his space to channel out everything he feels. It’s been there ever since he was an itty bitty kid.
For those who might not understand this: People who are lonely or isolated from others for most of their time in childhood often have an activity they get attached to. For me, it was drawing. I always had something to create art with. It was me and my own little world on paper against a harsh reality. I still draw often, perhaps even more than I used to nowadays. It’s a world where I can create whatever I want, whenever I want, and I can have fun doing so even if times are tough. It’s always a good time to draw, there’s never a wrong place to draw, it’s my safe space. I had little to no friends so that’s why I got so heavily invested in drawing.
People came and went but Beyblade never did. And though it is an activity and not a sentient being, it’s still what Jaxon treasures the most. It was there for him. No matter how lonely he felt he always could ignore those feelings with the fun of Blading.
And for my final point which is the reason I came to think about this: Blading requires more than one person to have fun.
I don’t care what you say about playing solo but Jaxon Cross would never truly have fun Blading by himself.
“Oh, but remember that 3215 launch he was doing by himself?” Sure he was giggling to it by himself but tell me he wouldn’t get tired of that.
It’s funny how lonely Jaxon is and how Blading requires him to essentially NOT be lonely— but the only thing it’s caused him is to become lonelier as a result. It’s a torturous cycle over and over. Jaxon has to have fun in a sport with others while continuing to feel lonely and even if he does connect with others, it only leads to that feeling becoming stronger.
And no matter how silly he acts or how carefree he seems on the outside, he still has inner turmoil going on within.
I would also like to add how Jaxon represents Salvation and Chrome represents Damnation. Jaxon salvages those he meets while slowly becoming damned himself.
That’s why I could not be in Jaxon Cross’s shoes— I do not want to imagine the loneliness he has experienced his entire life from the start to the present.
ramble alert:
I always thought about this but why the hell does Chrome hog all the good animation
