â Oppa, huh? â he sticks his tongue out playfully. âYou better be nice to me then.â Growing up, their friendship had been characterized by pranks and teasing, and heâs glad that there isnât any awkwardness, especially after so many years apart. â Of course Iâm treating you. What do you want? Pancakes? Porridge? You pick. And then you can tell me what youâve been up to all these years!âÂ
âItâs the crack of dawn,â she perks, a slight pep in her step. âPancakes!â When he mentions wanting to know about the years missed between them, Cindy freezes subtly. It didnât occur to her that Jaehoon had no idea about her pregnancy---- frankly, she had been trying to block out such trauma. She tries to evade the topic, a pressing smile presented before her. â---Why donât you tell me first? Your stories have always been a lot more interesting than mine.â
At her comment, Drew chuckled, nodding in agreement. To him, his world had always been alive. Ever since his childhood he was surrounded by all of the liveliness that the city had to offer. âIt is a different world. Iâve never really left the NOLA bubble but, I like it that way. I canât imagine living anywhere but here.â
âIt is a good place to not leave,â she replied with light laughs in between. She looks down his son. âWill you also stay in NOLA?âÂ
Alexander followed her with small steps thinking in his own schedule, he liked the mornings when he could go to run because he knew the day would be long, even working late night. That made he took time and enjoyed what he was doing. âI believe we are very close. I work in The Advocate. I am not sure if exist a salon close⌠maybe is what the girls from office spend their time.â He thought if he could go to his house for a moment. âI live close, can you go with me? I need to pick up a suitcase, I need other clothes. And I can leave you at the salon.â
She laughs, her hand politely hovering her mouth of habit. âI think I have seen those girls,â she says, recalling women in suits getting their hair done after work. The fact that he had requested her company made Cindy feel less of a nuisance, smiling softly. âYes, that sounds like a plan.â She gestures subtly, her body motioning in a swing, waiting for him to lead the way.
There were very few times throughout Savannahâs journalistic career where she felt she had writerâs block. It just wasnât something she experienced often, yet when she had, it was the bane of her existence. Looking down at the laptop before her, she let out a long sigh. She could feel the migraine setting in, the frustration showing on her face. âFuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you.â she mumbled out, before realizing the words she was speaking, had actually not just been inside her head. Looking up from her laptop, hardly ashamed of her choice of words, she smiled sheepishly âSorry, wasnât talking to you. I meant to say that to my laptop.â
The blondeâs coarse words had been rubbing Cindy uncomfortably, as she sat not too far from such heat. She was about to leave, but only moved an inch when she apologized after acknowledging her presence. âIt is okay,â she replies, shifting in place. âI did not thing it was me. Colorful choice of words, I think your laptop is sorry.â
Everyone has a chapter they donât read out loud.

âWhat do you mean, what are you doing here? I emailed you that I was coming to the States when I entered college!â he tilts his head to the side. âGosh, check your emails once in awhile!â
Inwardly, heâs really happy to see a familiar face from back home, especially one of his dearest childhood friends. Because their families had always been close, she was the only one he hadnât lost touch with after he started spending more and more time at math competitions.Â
âBut anyway, Iâm also here to ruin your life.â he grins. âDo you want to get breakfast?âÂ
She widened her eyes, frantically pulling out her phone. â---Really?â Her brows knit into confusion, feeling bad that she had missed his email. She then sighs, pouting a bit to realize she would have to scroll for hours before finding it. Cindy didnât exactly have the worst habit of checking her emails, but after arriving in NOLA, her entire being had made a complete 180. She smiles softly, nudging him playfully. âRuin it? Impossible--- itâs already ruined,â she played along, despite it being the truth. âOnly if youâre treating, Oppa.â
Everybody had a story behind. Alexander learned long time ago through the interviews he did with time. And he knew Cindy had one in particular but for once in a long time, he didnât want to ask it. Found a person like her in the city it was not easy. Everybody was into life, running all the time, and she seemed so calm and different. Even Alexander felt more in calm in the conversation. âDonât worry, was my pleasure.â He smiled. âI donât want to hold you, but were you work? Maybe I can walk with you or at least help you to get a cab.â
She started getting on her feet, bringing her belongings to her side. His offer is sweet, a kind smile gracing her features. âI am..â Cindy pauses, unsure if she should use the word custodian. It wasnât exactly a glamorous job. âworking in salon in the central business district. Is it not out of your way?â she asks, liking the idea of a peaceful walk. Normally, she wouldâve hailed a cab, catching a few minutes of downtime before catching another one to work. Checking her watch again, she quickly realizes that the walk would kill enough time before her shift.

Thereâs a certain comfort in having a steady routine in your life, and Jae Hoon feels no different. Each morning is methodical, meticulous to a certain extent.Â
6AM: Wake up.Â
No matter how much sleep heâs gotten that night (or not), he still drags himself out of bed at an unholy hour so he can prepare for the day ahead. Optional: Blare classical music & disturb all your neighbours if you really feel like starting the day with a bang!Â
7AM: Open shop and-- wait a second, doesn't he know that girl?
Heâs just drawn all the blinds in the shop & made sure the flowers werenât dead when a familiar head of dark hair swishes past the glass windows at a markedly swift, determined pace. He furrows his eyebrows, thinking hard, tapping the back of his head thoughtfully when it hits him all of a suddenâ Ara?Â
He knows sheâs in the United States too, his mom sent him an email when he was still in college last year, but where on earth is she stayingâ? OH!Â
And then thereâs no time to wasteâ heâs dashing out to the street, shoes barely put on and daylight just breaking, to catch up with her.Â
              âYAAA, Ara! Ara Lim!âÂ
Itâs early morning, a time Cindy is not accustomed to. If it werenât for the money she was in desperate need of, Cindy wouldnât have taken that early morning appointment. Life has been like that lately--- accepting odd work hours and taking on appointments for clients that needed her before morning events. With tired eyes, clad in sweats and unmade hair, she trudged her way down the sidewalk. Thankfully, the client lives near the salon, giving her the ability to drop off her supplies. All she wanted to do now is go home and catch a few more hours of sleep before getting up at 10.Â
Then, she pauses abruptly, alarmed by her Korean name being yelled at from the top of his lungs. She turns, eyes nearly bugging from the shock. She smiles, jumping with glee to see her old friend Jaehoon, giving him a light pat on the arm. âWho are you yelling at..,â she trails, slipping in a laugh. âWhat are you doing here? Itâs so nice to see you!â It feels unbelievably good to speak in her native language, unable to hide her happiness.Â
The little boy nodded his head not one for many conversations with stangers. Hearing her apology, Drew shook his head. âOh, youâre fine! We were just heading back home. No big deal.â He smiled at the woman. âSo, how long have you been here? Are you starting to like NOLA?â
âIt is very much... alive,â she laughs, widening her arms for emphasis. Cindy looks around, smiling sweetly as she catches a glimpse of how live NOLA really is. The music, the food, the people... the vast difference from Seoul making her feel like sheâs living a different life--- which, she technically is. âI am really liking the food, music... and everything, pretty much. New Orleans is like a different world. Almost not real.â
He felt grateful Cindy didnât continue asking things about his past. He could do an explanation about Boston, in the end he lived for long there, but he was still trying to understand where he was come from. And also, until the moment New Orleans proved be friendly, and that was exactly what he wanted. Alexander was a talker but that didnât mean he didnât like the silence, was comfortable be with the young lady. âYes, helps me to organize my thoughts, and begin properly the day.â Then he turned to see her: âThis is your usual routine?â
She shakes her head along with a soft chuckle. âOh, no. I am not usually outdoors. But, if the weather is pleasing, and I need to...,â she ponders, trying to think of the word. â....think, then I will.â Her choice of words is rather vague, but she finds herself in this same spot when certain triggers remind her of why she came to New Orleans in the first place. Her doe hues fall from his, remembering those triggers. Though, she pushes through, a small smile remaining. Cindy exhales a sharp breath for some pep, straightening her back. âThank you for your company. I should not keep you from your exercise.â She checks her dainty watch on her slim wrist, looking back up. âI have to get ready for work.â

Seoul. Alexander had an intrigue about Asia, he thought the life should be different, as she said, from western civilization. He was intrigued about her story but he felt can be rude if he continued asking questions as nothing. Good thing, she was happy there, because the change could be hard. With the question, he knew the answer was a yes or not, but for him was not simply. âBoston.â He felt awful about not confess the truth, but he couldnât. âBut I like New Orleans, has some differences but the city is great.â
âBoston,â she nods, evidently fascinated by the place--- well, from what sheâs seen in movies. âYes, I feel same way.â Looking down at her finished meal, she puts the containers away, brushing the hair out of her face. She takes a moment before speaking again, appreciating the moment of silence. It was calm and not desperate to fill in the quiet gaps, something Cindy greatly appreciates. âDid you enjoy your morning exercise?â she asked, recalling his attired and the fountain, catching a glimpse of it prior to asking.Â
