@cineminimized
Dionysus “Dio” Brillo, I'm Drunk, I Love You
Caridad Sonia “Carson” Herrera, I'm Drunk, I Love You
I started this project in June 2012 via Tumblr. Titled cineminimized (or simply Cine Mini), the project aims to recreate movie characters (and later on tv characters, musicians, artists, and other pop culture icons) using a signature minimalist style. The style is inspired by Lego figures, the Russian matryoshka dolls, and the kawaii aesthetics of Japanese anime.
I set the target of 1000 characters, and finally reached the goal! It took me more than two years because I need to watch the movies (the music videos of the singers, the tv series, etc) first to get to know (and fell in love with) the characters well before illustrating them. This cineminimized project serves as an illustrated directory of my favorite film and tv show characters, musicians and artists, models and athletes, and other pop culture icons.

Vivian Maier, Finding Vivian Maier
My 1,000th cine mini!!! After 20 months, I finished the challenge. I chose Vivian Maier (from the documentary Finding Vivian Maier) to be the “final” piece because of the lessons we can learn from her life as an artist. To know more about her, read photographer Eric Kim’s blog post titled 5 Lessons Vivian Maier Has Taught Me About Street Photography.
Here is an excerpt from the blog, and it’s really worth sharing: “Sometimes we forget the most important person to impress with our photography is ourselves. With the proliferation of social media, we always feel the need to impress others. We want to get tons of followers, likes, favorites and admiration from others.
If Vivian Maier started shooting street photography nowadays, she would have probably stayed off social media. She would have shot purely to satisfy herself– and not worry or care what others thought of her work.
I think the beauty of street photography is sharing it with others. Even with Vivian Maier– I think it would have been a shame if nobody ever discovered her work. Her images inspire, in their simplicity and beauty of everyday life. While it is admirable to create images to inspire other people– don’t forget that you want to impress and satisfy yourself. First shoot for yourself, and if others happen to enjoy your work– that is an extra plus.”
