This is so important.
I will always reblog this
Yes yes yes
Do you think the Bible was purposely translated incorrectly to include anti-LGBT passages? I personally do, but those around me disagree and cited online sources to show I'm wrong.
There’s 6 clobber passages commonly used against gay people.
———————————————————————
Sodom & Gomorrah - Genesis 19:1-38
The Hebrew word for “people” was put into English translations as “men” of the city.
None of the prophets/apostles in the Bible mention homosexuality as the sin of Sodom, not even Jesus. This idea comes later because the translation says “men”.
—————————
Levitical Laws - Leviticus 18:22; 20:13
These verses condemn male-male sex done as part of pagan worship rituals.
This passage is forbidding something done as part of the worship of Molech (see verse 21). This context usually is missing when people talk about these verses. Worshiping a different god is against the 10 commandments, which is why it earns a death penalty
There are 2 words for of “wrongs” in Hebrew, one that is wrong for everyone and usually translated as “abomination” and the things forbidden to Hebrew people and that’s usually translated as “unclean.” For some unknown reason, the King James translators chose to translate this word in this verse as abomination when the rest of the time it’s unclean. Why is this forbidden to Hebrew people? Because it’s worshiping a foreign god.
—————————
Pederasty in Corinth - 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Paul is speaking against prostitutes or random hook-ups, where sex is being pursued for sex’s sake.
Included in his list of things that can keep you from the Kingdom of God are the young (effeminate) male prostitutes and the men who buy their services. Rather than a condemnation of homosexuality, this is more about pedophiles.
—————————
Pederasty in Ephesus - 1 Timothy 1:9-10
These verses are referring to boy prostitutes, the male customers who used them, and the slave dealers who procured them and sold them into prostitution.
In both this passage and 1 Corinthians, if Paul was referring to homosexuals he would have used the standard Greek term at the time for sexual activity between males. So we can be fairly certain that this is not the meaning that Paul wanted to convey. I think he’s wanting to condemn what we would call pedophilia.
—————————
Strange Flesh - Jude 6-7
This is the least used of the clobber verses because it’s weird and unclear. It is referencing Sodom & Gomorrah and how the people lusted after strange flesh, meaning angels.
If someone believes the story of Sodom is about anti-homosexuality, they can interpret “strange flesh” to mean man-on-man sex.
—————————
Cult Prostitution - Romans 1:25-27
These verses are about behaviors involved in idol worship, which is forbidden in the Ten Commandments.
For centuries, unnatural sex acts meant anything that couldn’t result in pregnancy, such as oral sex, anal sex, dildo play and so on. It wasn’t until about 4 centuries after Paul wrote his letter do we have the first John Chrysostom discuss gay & lesbian sex and desires in reference to these verses.
—————————
None of these verses are about 2 gay people in a loving relationship. Not even just 2 gay people. They are anti-gay when they get pulled out of context.
Some of these verses are about straight people doing gay sex acts as part of the worship of false gods. Some are about men who are pedophiles.
October 14, 1977, Anita Bryant is pied for her antigay bigotry at a press conference in Des Moines, IA.
It was 40 years ago today…
Never gets old.
40 years on and it still is gratifying
Anita’s still alive and kicking and being anti-gay. Thom Higgins, who threw the pie when he was 27 – and was poetically from Beaver Dam – passed away 17 years later at 44. Info on his life is here. The pie throwing was a big deal. In an age before the internet let gays feel connected, and long before ACT UP, the pie showed small pockets of gays that we could fight back.
