“This is your fucking fault, Potter,” Regulus said in an accusatory voice swaying slightly as James took another hit from the spliff he’d snuck up to the top of the Astornomy Tower.

James, delighted, coughed a little and beamed. “My fault?” he asked, passing the joint to Regulus.

Of course Regulus, who had never smoked before, didn’t cough when he inhaled again. “Yes,” he agreed, probably trying to look prim but just frowning in a way James could only describe as adorable. “You’re just trying to get me…re–re–relaxed,” he murmured, struggling with the last word like it tasted odd. “So I’ll tell you things.”

“Tell you what?” James pressed, absolutely thrilled that Regulus was, in fact, more relaxed than he’d ever seen him. “That sometimes you mismatch your socks?”

“No! No, that…” Regulus lowered his voice looking around conspiratorially. “That I fancy you. And,” he sniffed, “that’s a nice try, Potter! But I’ll never tell you that! I’ll keep that secret until I die!”

He’d never been more excited before in his entire life. “But Reg,” he said, mouth stretched so wide his cheeks hurt. “You did tell me. Just now!”

The Slytherin looked like he’d been hit over the head with a large stick. “Buggering fuck,” he muttered, before bursting into laughter. “Just…erm, just–”

“S’okay,” James murmured comfortingly, wrapping an arm around him. “Lemme tell you a secret, yeah? Then we’ll be even?”
