↳ Lugh, Celtic God of Sun and Craft
Lugh is known as the Celtic god of the sun and crafts. Both in Celtic and Irish mythology, he was known as a fierce warrior. Accordingly to legends, Lugh had miraculously survived a slaughter run by Balor, the leader of the evil underworld group, Formorii. Having said that, he was able to kill Balor by throwing an eye that had the ability to kill whomever looked at it.
Outside of the Emerald Isle, he wasn’t very well known. Perhaps, he preferred it that way. He was now a young man, but one thing that hadn’t changed since he was a boy was that he was quiet. That didn’t mean that he hadn’t already gained a reputation as a formidable, thoughtful, and loyal fighter and clansman who fiercely protected his people and his lands...
Christopher had spent years by his father Clement’s side, learning from him and protecting their borders with him and the rest of their clan. Troubling times had made father and son become very close. While his Aunt Deirdre’s death had ultimately changed and marked his father, it was his twin sister Lena’s sudden departure and his mother Nichola’s actions against her that ended up breaking him. Chris worked to become his father’s confidante, someone he could rely on and trust. Clement would later on credit Chris for encouraging and motivating him to continue forward after the separation between him and Nichola.
Despite her actions, Chris didn’t hate his mother. He was once close to her when he was a little child, but once she held Lena back from training with him, and began to dote on her in other ways, Chris began to feel a distance begin to form. Perhaps that was why leaving with his father on important trips and missions became easier for him -- he felt like the two were in their own world together, and he was just intruding. That was also why Lena’s sudden departure shocked him- he had no idea that the relationship between his sister and mother had soured so badly. Chris had tried to remain close to his sister then. He always wrote to her, telling her how much he missed her and telling her about his adventures. But, she just left Connacht without a word to him, and it hurt him greatly. He was angry for a long time, but his anger waned when she returned and he was told what happened. Their reunion, however, was lukewarm; he was happy Lena was safe and sound, but still, he felt that the bond and trust they once had in each other was now broken.
Regardless, when Lena went to live with their Uncle William for a while, Chris completely supported her decision. He felt that if his sister was to forgive their mother, some space was required. Their father, however, could not, and when they separated, Chris already knew it was coming. While Lena was far away, he was there when the marriage between their parents imploded. He was there to see how gutted his mother was, and how horribly heartbroken his father was. Still, his father didn’t divorce her -- he kept their separation a secret from the rest of the clan. Only their immediate family knew. Clement told Chris it was because he still loved her as the mother of his children, and Connacht provided a safe haven for her. He didn’t want to take that away, despite how angry and hurt he was. Ultimately, Chris never showed any anger toward his mother whenever he got to see her -- he remained kind and nice to her. She was his mother, after all, and she never once hurt him directly. She had disappointed him, but he still loved her, and he made sure to let her know that he did manage to visit her.
All of these events led Chris to become very close to his cousin Slania, whose warmth and broad-mindedness made Chris feel like it was easy to open up to her. It was easy to bond with her, as they constantly traveled together while she worked with his father. They trained together, hunted together, and she even taught him some Latin, which she was fluent in thanks to her late father. It was because of her influence that he eventually found himself becoming more easygoing; He could be himself around her. When he told her he loved to draw, maps in particular, she encouraged it, and eventually, he was able to make maps for the clan to use. Unfortunately, his cousin’s relationship with their father deteriorated. That was one of the things Chris strongly disagreed his father with; his harsh treatment of Slania. Eventually, she left for Wexford, and they kept a frequent correspondence with each other. Her absence was greatly felt. He eventually began to bond more with the other person who missed Lani: her older sister Riley.
He knew by then that Riley was his trueborn older sister, as his father told him the sad tale of Riley becoming adopted by his Aunt Deirdre and Uncle Maxim. Such information didn’t exactly change his view of Riles; he grew up seeing her as a cousin, and that’s how he still saw her. Now, Riley was lively and loved to have long conversations -- the complete opposite of Chris. But, he found himself not minding it at all. Riley had a way of telling stories, and he liked to listen to her speak. She’d always chided him on how many girls in Connacht eyed him and informed him that she could easily set him up, which he always refused with a laugh. Riley was funny, and it helped him forget whatever woes plagued him for a short while.
When his cousin Eamonn, whom he got along decently with, left his family for good, he comforted her, as his departure greatly affected her. He began to stay at her house more often, as his father and Uncle William, who were now busier than ever, wanted someone to check in on her every now and then.
One night, after being away with his father and Uncle Will while they negotiated with a clan from Mide, he found his way to Riley’s home under the hill. He knocked on the door and eventually, she opened it. Right away, her mouth dropped open upon seeing him.
“Chris! You grew a fuckin’ beard!” She pointed out with a big smile. “Ooh, and you grew out your hair -- You look so good!”
Chris smiled bashfully, giving her a hug before she let him in. After some time, they were both sitting on the table by her kitchen, with Riley drinking some mulled wine and Chris drinking a cup of ale.
“I got lazy and just let my beard grow in,” Chris told her, rubbing his bearded chin with his free hand, “Same with my hair.”
“I think you should stick with that look,” Riley replied with a knowing nod. “So, what’s going on with you? How are the dealings by Mide?”
“I’ve been well, thank you for askin’. And they’re going on. Father met with a Chieftain and they’re mulling over some terms.” Chris said, sipping his ale slowly, as he didn’t like to drink too much. “Things are a bit slow, so he suggested I come in for a quick visit. He says hello and hopes you’re doing well. Uncle Will says you better not be causing any trouble.”
“Me? Cause trouble?” Never...” Riley said with faux indigence, a hand on her chest dramatically before she scoffed. “My sisters have fought battles and nearly gotten killed more than once, but I am the problem child?”
“You know what they say about you short women and your wild tempers...” Chris casually said, unable to help himself. That earned him a sharp look from Riley, who promptly smacked him on the top of his hand with a quick motion. Chris pulled back his hand, chuckling away.
“Shush, you! I open my door to you and this is the treatment I get?!” Exclaimed Riley with a pout, but there was a hint of a smile, followed by a roll of her hazel eyes. “But anyway, I’ve been just fine! Been regrowing the garden. Aiden sent over some seeds and I planted some this morning.”
The garden his Aunt Deirdre grew over the years burned down when Eamonn’s enemies attacked the home. Riley had been devastated by it, so he was glad to see her work on it again.
“That’s great! It’s been long overdue,” Then, Chris squinted his eyes. “You and Aiden have been, uh, speaking a lot huh?”
Riley turned a bright red, but she grinned. “I guess you can say that. We’re just friends, but I dunno. My mother used to say, ‘where there was once a fire, the ashes left behind could burn again.’ I don’t want to pressure him into anything more, but I don’t know...I think there still be something there.”
She then waved her hands around. “Let’s change the subject. This is making me anxious!” She took in a deep breath, calming herself. “How are your mother and sister?”
“Dunno. If I have enough time tomorrow, maybe I’ll stop by her home. She hasn’t written back, but she has had these bouts where I don’t hear from her for a long time.” Chris said, looking down at the cup of ale in his hand. “I’ve heard Lena’s been around her more often again, so I’m sure she’s keeping an eye on her.”
Chris drank the ale, trying to ignore the sad look Riley offered him. She was aware of the drift between the twins, just as the rest of their family was.
“You mean to visit your mother, but not your sister?” asked Riley, carefully raising her brows.
Chris shrugged, putting his cup down. “If she’s there, I’ll say hello. I dunno, there’s not much to say.”
Riley nodded slowly. “No, I get it. You’re not the only one with a sibling who caused a great stir in the Frankish Kingdom...”
Chris smirked a bit at that, but then, sat back, eyes towards the ceiling. “Yeah...what’s important is that she’s close with Father now, and hopefully, getting on better with mother. I know that matters to her a great deal...I know being around you helped her a lot. Uncle Will told me that.”
“Hm...Sometimes, it’s better to love someone from afar. But, are you alright with that?” asked Riley, her voice full of concern.
Chris thought about it for a long moment, then, he let out a shallow sigh. “I’m used to it now. I also got you cousins to fill in the gaps, so I’ll be fine.”
Riley smiled, reaching over a squeezing his hand. “Glad I could help her and you... Oooh, speaking of cousins, Lani said she plans to visit soon.”
That definitely perked him up. “Really? When?”
“Soon, she says. She’s got to do some work, but once she’s done, she’ll be headed our way! I’ll let you know so you can be around! She says she misses you a lot.” Riley replied.
“I miss her too. I’d appreciate that a lot. I mean to be here when she is--”
There was a knock on the door. Both he and Riley went still. Then, there was another knock. It was late at night now, so someone knocking on Riley’s door at that hour was strange right away.
“Are you expecting company?” He asked quietly.
When Riley shook her head no, Chris slowly stood up, reaching for his sword that was upon his belt. With his sword out, he approached the door, with Riley not far behind him.
He opened the door slowly, and there stood a messenger, with an extremely urgent message...
After her two sisters arrived from the turbulent trip to the kingdom of Snow Mystic, Riley had visited Fay right away, who had told her all the happenings of the trip. Riley had planned a visit to Slania in Wexford, but Slania revealed that she was very busy during those days. There were new projects happening in Wexford, most of which Slania was in charge of overseeing. Riley decided to postpone her visit, and told Slania via letters that she should visit Connacht instead. Slania, to Riley’s surprised, agreed that a visit was long overdue, and promised to visit once she got the chance. She herself was busy helping Clement with Clan affairs.
Since their closest allies had a new chieftain, Cathal mac Conchobair, Clement became more busy, and Riley helped him with things such as corresponding to messages for him, and recieving important visitors in his absence. Chris, her ‘cousin’, helped her with these tasks when he could, and they became a little closer as a result.
Eventually, she recieved a letter from Snow Mystic. Riley hestitated to open it, but strangely, her gut feeling told her to read it. In that letter, she learned that Layla, a girl who had lived with her family in Wexford for a few years, had died after childbirth. There was a quiet sadness in Riley. She felt surprise, but at the same time, she wasn’t entirely shocked. It was as if her death had already happened to Riley, and the letter only made it a reality. She meant to send a reply, but got caught up in the Clan matters once again soon after.
Aiden Ó Móráin and Riley had kept in touch despite his busy schedule. Aiden worked directly with Cathal, so he only managed to visit her twice since the reconciliation of their friendship. Riley found herself absolutely joyful when she recieved his letters, and would write him a response right away. So one particular cloudy and rainy morning, a letter had arrived for Riley. She was excited at first, but when she saw the seal, her excitement instantly waned. She put the letter on her kitchen’s table rather than open it right away. That afternoon, there was a knock on her door, and there stood Fay, a hooded cloak covering her from the rain.
“What a surprise! Come in, come in!” Riley greeted with a smile, shuffling her sister out of the cold rain. Fay removed her cloak and boats, then hugged her hello. They made their way to the kitchen, where Riley began to warm up some wine for them both.
“You cut your hair.” Riley remarked right away as she fetched some cups.
Fay touched her white-blonde hair, and smiled.
“I did. I enjoyed having long hair, but I don’t have the patience to deal with it.” Fay told her with a shrug.
“My hair refuses to grew back, can you believe it?” asked Riley incredulously, pointing at her own head. “Luckily, I like having my hair this way, but if I ever desire long hair again, it will be a challenge.”
“I think that cut suits you,” Fay said with a low chuckle.
Riley poured the warmed wine in cups and as she went to give Fay hers, Fay held up the letter she had recieved earlier that day.
“I came to visit to show to you a letter I recieved but I think you may have gotten one too.” Fay said with raised brows, taking her wine as Riley sat down.
“Ugh. Letters from that place have never been good ones.” Riley bemoaned, nursing her cup for a moment before she gestured to the letter.
Fay handed it over and Riley opened it, reading its contents.
“...Caspian’s wife is dead?” Riley blurted out in surprise.
“That’s what mine said too.” Fay stated quietly, rising her cup to her lips to take a drink.
Riley read the rest of the letter, but when she reached the end, she scoffed, and placed the letter down. “This wasn’t even from Caspian, so I don’t know why we were informed.”
“Didn’t you meet his wife?” asked Fay. “I didn’t get the chance to the last time I was over there.”
“I did once -- on their wedding day. She invited me, not Caspian.” Riley replied with a roll of her eyes. “She was very quiet, kept to herself. But she was a nice girl.” Riley pursed her lips, glancing at the letter. “What a shame. She died young.”
“It doesn’t seem that queens fair very well in Snow Mystic,” Fay commented thoughtfully.
“No,” Riley agreed, “Maybe I’ll send a letter formally giving my condolences. His now late wife was kind enought to invite me to their wedding, so perhaps I shall return the kindness.”
“If you do, you can put my name in there as well, seeing that they also sent me a letter about it.” Fay suggested.
“If you say so.” Riley said with a shrug. Then, she pursed her lips as a thought came to mind. “Do you plan to let Katy know or does she know already?”
Fay hestitated and leaned back against her seat.
“I plan to give her the letter and let her decide to read it or not. There’s a lot of bad history between her and Caspian. She never speaks about him, and the last time she did years ago, she was very upset.” Fay frowned.
“Has he even apologized, as he?” Riley flatly commented, pausing to take a drink of warm wine. “The fact that he hasn’t speaks volumes.”
“I know.” Fay mumbled. “But, Katy is a lot more caring than she likes to show. So, I don’t know what her decision will be.”
Riley eyed the letter before her again. Then, she asked, “Who is Lucas Duncan again? He’s the one who wrote this letter.”
“I believe he is Carolina’s cousin.” Then, Fay paused, eying Riley. “And he was Layla’s husband.”
“... Oh.” Riley simply said, feeling that quiet sadness again.
Fay also looked quite down when Layla’s name was mentioned. There was a silence between the two sisters for a moment.
“Can’t believe she’s actually dead.” Fay sighed, tracing her finger upon the cup’s brim.
“It’s strange. To me, it was as though she was already dead, and this only made it more real.” Riley revealed. “It’s like with Eamonn...“
Fay nodded somberly, understanding what she meant.
“It’s a twisted sense of irony that those two ended up the first to leave us.” Fay sadly remarked. “They were so close once.”
“Althought seperated eventually, it was both of their destinies to leave us behind.” Riley muttered, feeling a mix of bitterness and downheartedness. “At least she left her husband a child.”
“It won’t be easy to raise a child on your own. I experienced that for a few years, so I know how difficult it can be. But, it can be done. Let’s hope he manages.” Fay remarked.
Riley looked at Fay, then, her gaze went upon her mug. She and her sisters had lost so much those past few years. But, they still remained, and that was important to Riley. So she rose her mug with a hint of a smile.
“To moving forward.” She declared.
Fay blinked, but soon, a small smile displayed upon her lips as she rose her own cup.
“Yew Trees were sacred to our ancestors. They no doubt observed the tree’s qualities of longevity and regeneration. Drooping branches of old yew trees can root and form new trunks where they touch the ground. Thus the yew came to symbolise death and resurrection.”
Cathal mac Conchobair’s visit to Clan Conan’s territories was a lot longer than Riley thought it would be. What she thought would be only a couple of days turned out to be weeks. Cathal spoke a lot with Clement, and according to her Uncle William, there were a number of disagreements. One of the bigger ones was their views concerning Northerners. Cathal loathed them, and wanted them off the isle. Clement had a more neutral stance, which caused much tension between the two leaders who were trying to strengthen and redefine their Allied relationship.
This worried Riley, but the good thing about having Cathal around meant Aiden was around for much longer. Aiden’s duty was to accompany Cathal, as he did his late older brother, Chieftain Áed, so most of his time was spent with Cathal. But, there were moments when Aiden had some free time, and it was spent catching up with her. Aiden revealed that after she had ended things with him, he spent a long time alone. He became involved in the army of Conchobair’s, which is how he caught the eye of Áed, becoming someone close and trusted by him, and he also updated her about the happenings within his own family. Riley told him about the death of her adoptive mother Deirdre, and how difficult it was. She told her about all about Eamonn, and how he would randomly show up, and the things he did that hurt her and her sisters. Riley noticed that they both avoided asking each other about their love lives, and she tried to resist the urge to ask him about his, until one night, when Cathal was busy speaking to Clement again, leaving Aiden able to have dinner with Riley alone at her house.
As they cleaned up, Riley kept eying Aiden from the corner of her eye. It still surprised her how giddy she felt around him. She had tried to surpress it, but the more they spent time together, she felt it grow and grow. This bothered her, and she didn’t want to find herself yearning for the impossible once he went home. So, she cleared her throat and finally asked the question she dreaded to ask, even if she already knew the answer:
“I heard you got married.” She said, trying to sound as casual about it as possible.
Aiden had been wiping their plates dry with a cloth and he paused. There was a rather conflicted look on his face before he continued to wipe the plates.
“I did. To Áed‘s and Cathal’s cousin. My family advised me that it was best to marry before I got too old, so I agreed. I have a son -- his name’s Eoin.” Aiden replied calmly, not looking at her.
Riley felt happy about him having a child, but alongside that, there was a jab of jealousy as she washed the cups they had used. Still, she did her best to look content. “A son! Congratulations! I’m very happy for you, Aiden!”
“Thank you. I heard you’ve become involved with someone.” Aiden remarked while he kept his eyes upon the plates.
Riley tilted her head. “Who told you that? Áed?”
When Aiden nodded, she scoff lightly, surprised that the man would carry such news to him.
“His name was Elidyr, and there was a brief romance, but he chose to leave with my brother rather than to stay with me.” Riley grumbled, crossing her arms.
Aiden paused, then turned to look at her with surprise. “Wait, he chose your brother over you?”
“Yes! He couldn’t even tell me himself. Eamonn was the one who declared that he was leaving with him!” Riley complained. She had intially felt sad his departure, but once time had passed by, the sadness vanished, and she found herself feeling rather offended about the matter. “That’s why I’m convinced that it was my brother he truly wanted, but he was too ashamed to pursue him, so he went after me instead!”
Aiden pursed his lips, but Riley could tell he was holding back laughter.
“It’s not funny!” She insisted indignantly as a chuckle escaped Aiden, but he shook his head, holding up a hand.
“It’s-- no, it’s not. I’m sorry. It’s just, your theory sounds ridiculous at first, but then again, your brother did look like your twin, so... I’m just amused by how plausible the possibility is. You’re probably right, y’know.” Aiden explained sincerely before he gave her a frown. “But either way, good riddance. The man was not deserving of you.”
Riley stared at him. His kindness cut into her heart like a knife. She had broken the heart of this man terribly so many years ago, and there he was, telling her that she deserved better. In fact, he had been so damn amicable and nice since their reunion. She looked away, blinking away tears.
“You’re sweet, Aiden. Wrong, but sweet.” Riley told him as she put away the cups in her cupboard. “Your wife is a lucky woman.”
“I’m not wrong.” Aiden replied quietly with a shake of his head, and then, he turned to fully face her. “Our marriage was one of convenience, Riley.”
“...Was?” Riley asked, catching on that he strangely spoke about his marriage in past tense.
“She died about two years ago.” Aiden revealed after some hestitation. Riley covered her mouth. She hadn’t heard anything about that, so this came as a shock to her.
“What? How?” Riley asked urgently once she lowered her hands.
“Our marriage wasn’t one created from passionate love. But we got along well. We had something in common, and I think that helped us form a strong friendship. But after she had Eoin, she changed,” Aiden told her, a great sadness in his eyes. “She was so detatched from him, as if she resented him. I tried everything I could to make her feel better, but she became detached from me and then everything else. One day, I was called to come home immediately. Her mother had gone to visit and found our son alone, crying and hungry. We looked for her for days, and we found her dead, most likely by her own hand.”
Riley, feeling a great sorrow for Aiden and the terribly hardship he and his son went through, put a comforting hand on his back. “That’s terrible, Aiden. I am truly sorry for your loss.”
Aiden nodded softly, falling silent for a moment. Then, he moved to stand closer to Riley, until their shoulders brushed against each other. “I didn’t mean to keep that from you. I just didn’t expect to have the chance to speak with you like this again. I didn’t know how to bring it up.”
Riley offered him a half smile. “You don’t owe me anything, y’know. So, don’t worry. In fact, I didn’t think you’d ever talk to me again...” The guilt from before returned, and now, she felt overwhelmed. Unable to contain it any longer, she turned slightly and looked him in the eye, not caring if he could see her tears form. “Aiden, I’m so sorry for hurting you.”
When Aiden shook his head and began to protest, Riley grabbed his hand. “Please, let me finish.” Once he seemed to relent, she released him.
“I’ve criticized my brothers Eamonn, Ryan, and Tristian for leaving me behind, for not considering my feelings, but I’m no different. I did that to you.” Riley’s voice broke, and those tears fell, but she pressed on, as this was something she had wanted to tell him for years. “I... was so convinced I was so undeserving to be loved, to have love... I made a choice I thought was best for the both of us, but I didn’t even stop to consider how you felt, what you wanted. I didn’t let you have a choice, or even a voice in the matter. That was so incredibly wrong of me.”
Aiden’s eyes went downcast, and he looked woeful, as the memory of their break up was clearly still a painful one to him as it was for her.
“I apologize for all the hurt and heartbreak I’ve caused you. I didn’t mean to do that to you, but I did and I hate myself for doing that to you...”
A great sob escaped from her, causing her to cover her face with her shaking hands. As she wept, she felt Aiden’s hands grab her wrists gently. It didn’t take him much to pull her hands away from her face. For a brief moment, she felt embarassed, feeling that she looked ugly crying in such a way. She even felt her nose become runny. Yet, Aiden didn’t seem to care. He had tears in his eyes, and he looked distressed.
“Don’t hate yourself, Riley. Please. Don’t do that anymore.” He pleaded, “It breaks my heart to know you still feel that about yourself.”
That worsened her guilt. She began to pull away from him, her voice taut and high pitched as she sobbed. “Oh no! I didn’t meant to do it again -- I’m so sorry!”
“No no no, Riley. Listen.” Aiden replied in a soft tone, putting his hands firmly on the side of her face, “I accept your apology. I truly do. But I already forgave you a long time ago.”
“You did?” Riley sniffled, tears blurring her vision.
“Yes. It did hurt me greatly when you ended our relationship suddenly. I was angry, but it was because I thought you let Svejn Kveldulf win.” He explained, wiping tears away with his thumbs as they fell. “ With time, and especially after what I went through, I came to understand the type of guilt and grief you felt. I wish I knew then what I know now. Maybe then I could’ve handled things better.”
It was now Riley’s turn to shake her head. “No, you did the best you could. And I’ll always appreciate you for it.”
She took his hands and pulled them from her face, but she kept holding them as she tried to smile, but she ended up frowning sadly.
“I miss you. There were so many things I’ve wanted to talk to you about.”
Aiden smiled slightly, and gave her hands a warm squeeze. “I miss you too. We’re talking now, aren’t we?”
Riley nodded, but once again overcome with emotion, she couldn’t help but squeak when she asked: “Can...can we be friends again?”
Aiden chuckled lowly and wrapping his arms around her, hugging her tightly. “Of course we can.”
Riley now sobbed into his shoulder, but this time, it was out of relief, and happiness.
----
Not long after, Riley was wiping her face with a cloth as Aiden watched.
“...You’re still the only man who’s seen me ugly cry like this. I’ll have to kill you if you ever mutter a word about this to anyone.” She muttered, glancing at him as she wiped her nose.
Laughter escaped from Aiden. “I won’t tell a soul. And you call that ugly? I thought Conans were incapable of being ugly.”
Riley couldn’t help but smile as she lowered the cloth from her now cleaned face. “Some of us come close when we cry.”
Aiden looked away, still laughing, which caused her to let out a laugh too. Soon after, he eyed her quietly for a moment.
“Now that we’re friends again, I feel as though I should warn you about something.” He began, looking troubled.
Riley’s brows furrowed. “About what?”
“It’s Cathal. As you may know, since the death of his older brother, he’s become incredibly hateful towards all Northerners, especially those who live on this great isle. He’s become incredibly angry with the fact that Slania chose to support her Northern cousin. In fact, he’s been insistently asking Clement about when she’ll be back in Connacht, and how he could let her ‘run off’ to aid ‘filthy Northerners.’ It’s so much that I’ve been wondering if this just about the death of his brother at the hands of Northerners. ...Do you know of anything that may have occured between him and your little sister?”
Riley felt unsettled. Not so long ago, she had talked with Fay about how little they knew about Slania’s personal matters. Clement thought it was strange that Cathal had asked for Slania, and apparently, so did Aiden.
“...Slania’s been very private when it comes to her personal things. I think a reason is because of what happened to me. Eamonn would always criticize me for my choices, and kept trying to intrude in my personal life. He did that with Fay too. He kept blaming me for Svejn’s death.”
Aiden right away began to look angry.
“It was a shitty thing he did, but there’s no use in becoming angry towards someone who’s long gone.” Riley insisted. Once Aiden relaxed, she continued. “I became someone unreliable to her once mother died. I isolated myself for a long time, so whatever happened to her during that time, I don’t know about. Still, I don’t like the feeling I get when I’m around Cathal. He was basically interrogating me before.”
Aiden nodded solemnly. “I was always closer to Áed, but I do know that Cathal changed a great deal after his death. Don’t get me wrong: He’s been a decent leader thus far. Áed was a better warrior, but Cathal is a better politician. Still, he’s got a strong vendetta against Northerners, and he means to act upon it. Many back home support this cause.” Then, there was a pause. He took in a deep breath. “I think you should warn your sister when you get the chance.”
Riley pressed her lips together. Her gut told her this had the potential to be a problem not only for Slania, but for possibly the people of Wexford.
“I will. I’m going to go visit her very soon.” She told him.
“Alright.” Aiden replied, looking more at ease. “I don’t think we’ll be staying for longer, by the way.”
This caused Riley to pout, but then, she remembered about his son, and instead, she gave him an understanding look. “I’m sad about that, but I understand. You do have your boy to get home to. How old is he, by the way?”
“He’s lived through four springs.” Aiden told her proudly.
“Ooh, a spring baby like me!” Riley said excitedly, feeling solidarity with a boy she hadn’t even met before. Then, she bumped her shoulder into his. “Maybe I can meet him someday.”
“Of course you can.” Aiden said with a warm smile. “Maybe I can visit more often, especially since we’re friends again and all...”
Crows on the battlefield are harbingers of doom. They await the battle’s end to feast on the fallen. The Irish warrior goddesscalled the Badbh is a crow goddess. Badbh literally means “crow.” “scald crow” or “raven” but it also has the added connotation of “-witch.” She is a mysterious spirit.
Badbh may be a title, not a name. It is used as an epithet for other Irish warrior goddesses, like Macha, the Morrigan and Nemain. The Badbh is very closely associated with the Morrigan; some perceive Morrigan and Badbh as two names for the same spirit. The Badbh may also be the same spirit as the Gaulish deity, Cathobodua, in which case her veneration was widespread in the ancient Celtic world.
Her power on the battlefield is psychological: the Badbh doesn’t actually fight on behalf of devotees. Instead, she terrifies, intimidates, and confuses their enemies with her presence. The Badbh appears in the epic Ulster Cycle. She is closely associated with the hero, Cu Chulain, assisting and encouraging him on several occasions. In addition to her responsibilities on the battlefield, the Badbh is associated with death and the Otherworld.

Aiden Ó Móráin stood in front of her, staring at her as she, with her mouth agape, stared at him in return. His once long hair that reached his shoulders had been cut short. His once clean shaven face now sported stubble growth. He had aged, but it suited him very well. A faint smile appeared on his handsome face as he approached her and without warning, he wrapped his arms around her.
“I’m so glad you’re safe...” He said sincerely, giving her a squeeze as Riley simply stood there, too stunned to move.
Riley’s hazel eyes darted in all different directions as her mind became overwhelmed with thoughts. The last time she had seen Aiden was ten years prior, when she tearfully told him she could not be with him any longer. He begged her to reconsider, but Riley, broken at the thought of Svejn Kveldulf throwing himself upon the spears of his enemies because of her rejection of him, ended her relationship with Aiden, believing that he was better off without someone like her.
As a older, more knowing woman, she then realized that breaking up with Aiden was not neccesary, as she truly had no fault in Svejn’s death.
The last time she saw him, he had a desolate look on his face, caused by heart break. But there he was, hugging her and relieved that she was out of harm’s way. Eventually, she felt herself ease into his embrace, closing her eyes for a moment. She felt relieved to see him alive and well too. Then, worried she had hugged him too long for it to be appropriate, she pulled away from him, clearing her throat as she managed to give him an awkward smile.
“I...Yeah, I’m safe.” Riley stammered, frowning right away as she realized how nervous she suddenly felt with Aiden there. That was something new. “You -- Uhm ...You cut your hair.”
“As did you,” Aiden said, his eyes on the sides of her face where the ends of her hair rested, “It actually suits you well. It brings out your features more.”
Riley couldn’t help but smile at the compliment. “So many years later, and you still can’t help but boost my ego, hm?”
“It comes naturally.” Aiden smiled, and Riley’s heart lept upon seeing it. He had such a friendly and inviting smile, and it always made her feel content to see it.
She felt undeserving of such a smile, and feeling guilty, she looked away. “Why are you here?”
From the corner of her eye, she could see Aiden frown. He also looked elsewhere, his gaze towards the hills seen at a distance from her home. “I heard about what happened with you and Eamonn. I had the opportunity to at least see from a distance if you were truly safe and sound, and I took it.”
Riley winced, and tried to ignore the painful pang in her chest at the mention of her brother. It was still a painful subject for her, especially after what her younger sister Slania had revealed in Wexford.
“It wasn’t neccessary, Aiden. But... I appreciate your concern. So, thank you for checking on me.” Riley said quietly, and she could see Aiden nod his head gently.
“You’re welcome.” He said.
Riley wanted to ask him so many questions, and her guilt protested against it. She felt like she didn’t have a right to ask him about his life, especially after the way she broke his heart. But this was the first time they had seen each other in a decade, so her curiousity was eating away at her. But, before she could finally give in to her impulses, Aiden beat her to the punch.
“I heard your brother caused a battle here and then left for good. Is that true?” Aiden mentioned, keeping his gaze away from hers.
Riley blinked. “Who told you that?”
“The Conchobairs... My family has become closely allied to his in these recent years. I’m currently serving under Cathal.” Aiden revealed, which made her look at him in surprise.
“You serve Clan Conchobair now? Well, that’s certainly something new.” Riley replied with a brow raised. But then, she let out a sigh. “It’s not that he caused it, but my father’s former right hand man had other sons after the war. Apparently, they promised their father on his death bed that they’d take revenge on us for ... for Svejn.”
Saying his name in front of Aiden all those years later left a bitter taste in her mouth. After so many years of feeling sorry for the man, Riley now resented him, his father, and even the half brothers he never knew. Aiden frowned and cursed under his breath. Riley wondered if she had rekindled the resentment Aiden felt towards Svejn from all those years ago, starting from the days when Svejn would refuse to accept her rejection.
“But, they’re dead,” Riley continued, “But the damage was done to my brother. He left because he feels we’re safer without him. We couldn’t change his mind, so we let him go.”
“Damn. That’s rough. I’m sorry you and your family went through that. Truly.” Aiden leaned against the wall of her home, looking at her sympathetically. “...I know this may sound shallow, but you look good. You seem ... less burdenered, more at peace. It’s a good look.”
“Heh. There you go with the ego boosting again,” Riley pointed out with narrowed eyes.
“I suppose that despite the time that has gone by, some things don’t change,” Aiden retorted with a smile.
Riley smiled back, and before she could ask him a question about his life, the door of her home opened and out walked Cathal mac Conchobair, not even looking their way but still, he spoke out towards Aiden.
“Let’s go. We’ll return here in the afternoon,” Cathal told him, with a rather sour look on his face.
Riley and Aiden watched him go and Aiden let out a long sigh.
“I better get going then. Uh, do you want to have a drink tomorrow evening? It’s been such a long time and I’d like to catch up.” Aiden said, raising his brows.
Riley smiled a bigger smile, unable to help herself. “I’d like that, Aiden.”
“Great! See you tomorrow then,” Aiden flashed her a grin and he walked towards where Cathal had gone.
She watched him go, feeling her heart beating fiercely in her chest. She never thought she’d see Aiden again, and not only did she see him, but he wanted to talk to her! She thought he hated her all those years, so it was a great relief to know that it wasn’t the case at all ...
She was so busy being happy about her surprise encounter, she didn’t even see Clement walk outside and stand next to her.
“Everything alright?” Clement asked curiously, causing her to jump a bit in surprise.
“Huh?! Oh! ...Oh yeah ...I’m good.” Riley replied nervously, “Uh, everything alright with you? Cathal didn’t look so thrilled.”
Clement crossed his arms. “I don’t know. We’ve been allies with Clan Conchobairs for many, many years. I just hope that dealing with this new leadership doesn’t prove to be too difficult, but I’m already not so optimistic... I don’t like that he’s so friendly with the man whose plan led to his brother’s death.”
“It is weird that he trusts him so much,” Riley agreed.
“Do you know if Slania has ever mentioned him before? He asked again when she’ll return, and it’s just strange that he kept asking that.” Clement asked.
Riley agreed with that too, frowning as she nodded. “It is. And no, she’s never mentioned him to me before... Maybe I should ask her why he keeps asking for her?”
“If you get the chance, you should. Or tell her to contact me as soon as she can.” Clement told her seriously, “Because I don’t think he’ll be happy to know that one of ours is living amongst northerners.”
“I think I fall in love a little bit with anyone who shows me their soul. This world is so guarded and fearful. I appreciate rawness so much.”

Once it was all over, her stare remained on the “leeches” — all slaughtered first by Slania, and then by Keiran. Her breathing was just as heavy as his, but hers was labored and more shallow. She turned her head to look at him, her stare wide-eyed and intense.
Then, her eyes inched upwards towards the tall trees above them that were swayed by a cool breeze...
“The tall, redheaded woman was just as stunning in elegant clothing as she was in armor. While she looked terrifying on the battlefield, there was a grace to her movements then.” [x]
One of the Irish names for a Scald/Hooded Crow is ‘Badhbh’. This is derived from an ancient Irish war goddess known as badb, who often took the form of a crow as she flew over the battle field
[ The following is a log of a scene involving Layla and Slania. ]

: a soft knock, followed by a loud knock. Layla hasn’t any experience with Slania, and she was just a kid when Riley and Fay all lived in the same household. There was an uneasy feeling caught in her throat, as she bent over and coughed into one of the marble statues. “ Slania, you awake?” She forced herself up right “ let’s go for a walk, okay?” (D)
my-sensorium
Now, there was noise coming from the room Slania and Carolina shared -- including a sleepy grunt that sounded a little too masculine to sound like either woman ... "I wouldn't that if I were you. Not unless you want someone to chew your head off." said a rather familiar voice. It sounded just like Deirdre's, just with less of a Celtic accent. Once Layla turned to her left, she'd see Slania walking towards her, holding a half empty bottle of ale in her hand. Last time, Lani looked on edge and exhausted. Now, she looked a little more at peace and the circles under her eyes looked less dark. Someone had gotten some sleep! And there was a reason for that, but that reason had gone to speak to Destiny. "You're Layla, right?" Slania stated once she stood in front of the woman. "You said something about taking a walk?" [d]
thedawnbeauty
“ hey.” She turned looking at her “ I can take another minute in this place going through every hall, this place is a maze. But I did see they have forest, and yes please a walk in needed.” She gestured her head knowing the way “ atleast you got a room, I was given a pillow. He doesn’t like me much “ (d)
my-sensorium
"Hm... Alright." Slania replied with a raised brow. She and Layla were practically strangers to each other, so it was strange to her at first that Layla would want to take a walk with her. She took a quick swig of ale before she began to walk side by side with her. Slania took a moment to eye the shorter woman (assuming Layla did not stand at six feet like she was.) "I actually slept in the kitchen last night. I only slept for a little while, but it was the best sleep I've had since being here." Slania said with a half smile.[d]
thedawnbeauty
“ this place will do it for you, it’s haunted I’m sure.” She turned down the hall, pushing open the door, that lead towards the garden path. She gave her a weak smile, she was indeed shorter, taller than Riley, but shorter “ How’s everything been.. since we’ll tell me. The last time I saw everyone Eamonn” she paused and titled her head a little unsure but continued “ he was stopping me from hurting someone, told me I should keep what I had to myself - my gifts “ she tried to clarify. (D)
my-sensorium
Since Slania had finally gotten some rest, and had spent some quality time with someone she completely trusted, her normal friendly demeanor was in full display. She seemed relaxed, and in a better mood. But as soon Layla brought up Eamonn, a somber expression instantly replaced her amicable one. Just the mention of her brother's name brought a wave of sadness unto her. "Is that so? Ah. I've forgotten he used to be wiser..." Then, she frowned deeply, realizing she'd have to be the bearer of bad news. "Lots of bad events happened, and some were caused by him; Including the fires of Wexford." Slania hesitated, pressing her lips together. "Uhm... he's gone. Not dead, but he decided to leave our family forever." [d]
thedawnbeauty
She stopped again her tracks and frowned “ He was special, you know, made you heard and nice. He used to smile, and I remember your mother loved his smile. Leaving behind your family, is the most selfish and loving decision a person can make. You think it’s loving because you assume everyone will have such a great life without you, and it’s selfish because you leaving only makes everyone miserable.” She took a deep breathe and continued their walk “ I Should know, I pretty much made that decision more than once. I’m sure he wakes up everyday in pain and wishes he could take back everything he did, but knows it’s impossible and heartbreaking for everyone. Did he start the fires?” (D)
my-sensorium
Slania looked away, uncomfortably trying to withhold as much as her sadness as she could. But, she couldn’t hide all of it. Just the look in her bright blue eyes was melancholic. “That’s the Eamonn I remember from my childhood. The one that came back after my father’s death, however, was not that.” Then, she offered Layla a sad smile. “You are fortunate enough to only have the good memories of him.” She let out a long sigh, looking up as they continued to walk. “The former jarl laid a trap meant for Jacob. Eamonn, who had just learned that Jacob is our cousin, overstepped him and took over as Earl, effectively taking the bait. The enemy used that an excuse to burn down the city. Carolina almost died and so did I… the last I saw Eamonn, he called me stupid and shit so…” And it still hurt. Slania winced when she repeated the words said to her. “But… Wexford has been rebuilt. He said farewell to my sisters and sent me a letter so that’s that.” It was clear she wanted to move on from talking about her brother. “I think my sisters mentioned a letter about you during their last visit though…” [d]
thedawnbeauty
She rubbed her arms listening to how he changed “ He offered to marry me once, it wasn’t going to be any sort of real marriage. But a chance to get me out of things my family wanted from me. I couldn’t escape my fate, I couldn’t escape my mother title, even if she had given it all up. I.. I just can’t believe he would be so stupid, so “ she rubbed her eyes as the garden trail finally lead into the woods “ I suppose I should say all the things that happen, so perhaps you can get a better idea of what went on. My mother, she was good to others, but not good to me.” She began slowly
“ I suppose the best thing she ever did was ask your mom if I could stay with her a for while. She was really scared my father was going to find me, and make me like him. He’s a powerful mage, and he didn’t do good things” he murdered a lot of people in golden horn…
I stayed for a long time, a few summers and winters. But when I was sixteen, my cousin Ryan said it would be best if I came home. He had intentions of giving my hand away to a prince named Norbu, and at the time he assigned me two guards, Lexington and Luca” she continued to tell the story “ your mother knew it was time for me to leave, but wanted to make sure I knew I could always come back. Riley and Fay were like sisters to me, and my aunt Nichola also pressured me into accepting my responsibility.” She rolled her eyes at that “ I was supposed to get married but Ryan called it off, said it wasn’t a good move for me. He maintained his alliance but he told me, I should remain in the castle until I was needed. I fell in love, with Luca. Who desperately wanted nothing more than to get his home back. You see at the time, the Blackwood weren’t allowed in their family home, Ryan was still upholding his uncle decree. But then my brother .. took the throne and everything changed. Luca was given the option, if he left me, his family would be restored. Matthew, my brother hated me. He hated how I treated his wives.” She chucked now, as his wives were insane “ Luca took the bait, and gave it to his cousin Michael, and in the end we moved to Wexford and we stayed way out of town, so we didn’t.. stay near Jacob snd Carolina, it was complicated. Beside us being linked together, we share a nephew together, and I hated the way the boy worshiped Jacob. So I kept Luca away from everyone and everything he loved. Then .. we’ll, then you know, the fire.” She took a deep breathe as she felt she was taking endlessly “ I honestly didn’t come to see you Riley and Fay after your mother passed because I didn’t know how to look them in the eye and show them how much I changed, how much I became this disappointment. I made really, really bad choices. Choices that people will never forgive me for, I literally took a dagger and stabbed Caspian, when I know he was on his way to Katy. I literally killed marcus brother, because I wanted i strength to protect myself. Trust me when I say, Eammon telling you goodbye was decent, and kind. I’m, an asshole, I’m jealous ex wife, who having a baby, and freaking out.” (D)

Slania tilted her head from side to side while her blue eyes held a weary expression. It wasn’t the first time someone expressed that type of shock when learning about her brother, and she knew it wouldn’t be the last. Now, as she listened, Slania would take occasional swigs from the bottle. She didn’t know why Layla had decided to suddenly open up and basically tell her everything that happened to her. She did grimace a little when she mentioned what Nichola had pressured her to do, and she was mid-swig when Layla mentioned her pregnant. She stared at her, lowering her bottle from her lips. “You’re pregnant? Oh…” Well, Layla was certainly in a stressful situation and no doubt the pregnancy made her emotional state more overwhelming. Slania let out a long sigh and surprisingly, she wrapped one arm around Layla’s shoulders, effectively giving her a rather warm, one armed embrace. She held her there for a while, then pulled away, and continued to walk forward,. As she did, she gave her a shrug. “It seemed like you needed that, even if you did make irreversible, stupid choices.” She told the woman sincerely.
As they finally walked into the woods, Slania looked ahead, taking a deep breath in. Just around the woods made her feel even more better — more in tune with herself. “Listen, I didn’t know you. I’ve just started to get to know you, so your absence wasn’t something that affected me. As for Riley and Fay… mother’s death was really hard on them. Riley cut off her hair in grief and Fay stopped visiting because being in the house without mother was too painful.” She frowned once more. “I think they’re worried about you but after this whole thing with Eamonn, I don’t think they know how to approach you. Or me, for that matter.” [d]

Her shoulders lowered feeling, the warmth of someone hug, something she hasn’t experienced in a long time. “ No we don’t know each other, that was my mistake. But, we can always speak to them together, and maybe they get their years of reasonable anger “ one of her bracelets hooked on a few of Slania strands “ I didn’t even think I could have kids, I made a specific arrangement for this never to happen. But, my father said.. some curses have loop holes.” She turned back hearing something in the distance as she extended her arm across Slania torso “ we aren’t alone in here.” (D)

When she pulled away, the strands of hair caught on Layla’s bracelets were left behind — Slania did have very long hair, after all. The thought of speaking to her older sisters with Layla made her appear to consider the idea. She tilted her head back and forth, thinking about it. “It would be… less awkward if someone else was there,” She told her thoughtfully. As for the curse, she nodded. “I’ve heard that. Curses are funny like that…” She trailed off, also hearing something. She furrowed her brows, looking towards that direction. “…Hopefully it’s a deer or something.” She mumbled towards Layla, although she suspected that most likely, it was not. [d]

It had felt like time around this was standing still, what seemed like a casual walk on the garden, came to a halt, to the sounds of dozens of footprints crashing there way. At first she thought it was just dealers in the area, but there was no movement in the trees, she immediately thought of her child as protective hands moved to her stomach, and she dared to think maybe, tossing Slania to them first and running could save her skin. “ I’m counting twelves heartbeats coming this way, and they are out for bloo-“ she couldn’t finish as a man can leaping out of the bushes, forcefully tackling her to the ground- d-

Slania didn't have her sword. She had left in behind in the room she had shared with Carolina. But, Carolina had now shared it with Jacob, and she, in her exhaustion, hadn't thought to retrieve it when she had the chance. And now, the only thing she had was the small knife in her boot. But, before she could retrieve it, Layla was tackled to the ground. Without thinking twice, she dropped her bottle, and kicked the attacker swiftly on his side. Even tired, a kick from Slania hurt like hell. If it landed true, it may have even cracked a few ribs. Slania then knelt down and took out the small knife from her boot, and looked around. [d]
thedawnbeauty
The attacker went flying, as the crushing sound of ribs cracked followed next. He wore a black mask so his identity was hidden. As Layla sat up “ what the fuck.” As she extended her hand. “ Don’t breathe.” As the man would begin to feel his lungs closed, gasping for air, her eyes turned seeing two men now appear behind Slania “ Behind you!” (d)
my-sensorium
Just as Layla began to warn her, the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. She only had half a second to turn and as she did, she turned the small knife in her hand. The attacker on her right had the unfortunate luck to get stabbed right in the eye by Slania’s short blade. As the attacker screamed and she pulled out the blade, that gave the other attacker time to tackle a weary Slania, and that proceeded to knock out the now bloody knife out of her hand. They went down hard, and Slania felt a striking pain on her upper back. She turned her body to try and take the knife, but the man wrapped heir arms around her and tried to pull the other way. Slania proceeded to jab the attacker’s chest with a sudden backward movement by her elbow. The attacker grunted, but didn’t let go, so she twisted her arm inward and jabbed again, this time, hitting them right on the gut, causing them to heave and let go. She scrambled to get the knife and as she did, the attacker attempted to strike a second time. Slania suddenly turned in time and impulsively thrusted her small knife forward, getting them on the left side of their gut. There was a painful scream and Slania withdrew her knife, scrambling to her feet. Eyes darted back and forth, trying to think of an escape plan.
In the meantime, she tried to stay close to Layla, keeping an eye out for the pregnant woman as her weary mind tried to process a plan. [d]

Layla watched in horror, as they seemed to be come directly towards Slania, as she wobbled herself back to her feet. Even as the men were screaming in pain, she flinched her wrist, and muttered words underneath her breathe, as they sequential knocked out at once. " We need to head back to the place.' she felt a tug on her hair, as lifted her hands over her head, grabbing the next attack arm, as she flung him over her shoulders, shifting her body to pull on his shoulder, dislocating his arm " Who sent you." she tugged again, as she looked up and saw another men running towards them " look at Slania!" [e]

It hadn’t even occurred to her that they weren’t after the silver tongue, the woman connected directly to Carolina Adair, the currently leader of the dealers. All Slania could think was to fend off the attackers, and try to get herself and Layla back to Marcus’s estate. It’s all her mind could manage to think of. She didn’t even want to know why; she just wanted to get back to safety.
Layla’s words made her head turn, and she managed to dodge the attacker by moving backwards quickly to get away from attacker’s reach, but the attacker actually knelt down and managed to make a slash on her upper thigh. It wasn’t deep, but it still hurt, prompting her to yelp out in pain. Seeing the attack come at her once again, in desperation, she threw her knife, and it landed right into the attacker’s forehead, causing him fall back. She staggered back as blood began to run down her leg, staining her brown pants. She would have gone to retrieve her knife, but she heard more people closing in quickly.
“We should make a run for it.” She finally said, realizing that with Layla being pregnant, and she in her sleep deprived, weakened state, it would be too risky to simply fight them all.
The estate wasn’t too far, she reasoned. They could make it… right? [d]
thedawnbeauty
Suddenly there was a loud roar, almost like thunder was closing in. The attackers she had put to sleep, were waking up and hissing at them, one was even trying to drag himself towards Slania leg. “ Blood. Give me the pure blood.” The man hissed, as Layla took a deep breathe “ There a hunting lodge nearby, it belonged to my mother, we can make it there. “ one by one the leafs began to fall from the tree, until they were bare, that’s how many footsteps were approaching and coming after them, “ We need to go now, this way!” Wrapped one of Slania arms around her neck, to help her way in that direction (d)

The blood travelled down her leg, but lucky, it didn’t drip unto the ground. But still, the attackers screeching for blood perturbed her, especially since she was the one bleeding. Slania didn’t like the idea of going even further away from the estate, but with all those attackers, they would either be caught before they even reached the walls of Marcus’s home, or they would bring violence to the weary group inside…
Slania decided to trust Layla. Besides, Slania was keen on making sure she and her unborn child were safe and sound as well. So, with a nod, she followed her, running as fast as she could right behind Layla.[d]
thedawnbeauty
A firm nod, as she pressed her weight against her, as she carried her along side her towards the hunting lodge, which was on the way back towards the manor. She turned back seeing w group of attackers were now right behind them, as she hopped on one leg turning down as she lifted her hand up, watching as three men lifted into the air, as she swung her hand to the side watching as their back slammed into a tree trunk. She was getting tired, and she hadn’t used her gift, in a long time. She didn’t need to before, as she nodded to Slania it was okay, and continued sprinting towards the lodge, a wooden cabin, with a blue door. Just as they were getting to the steps, she felt a hand on her leg, tugging her back. She was quick to release Slania, pushing her into the lodge step, as she flung back on her side. As an attacker crawled ontop of her, hands moving to her throat, squeezing it (d)

Now, the magic use by Layla didn’t surprise her too much. She had done a mini quick course on the supernatural a while back. But still, Layla’s magical maneuvering garnered a look of surprise from the redhead. But seeing the woman get tired did concern her. However, they had to press on.
Seeing the cabin made her feel relief. But just as they almost reached it, she was pushed in. Slania didn’t even think twice to head back outside. That was the soldier in her; she’d be damned if anyone was left behind. She rushed at the attacker, and landed a punch right on the side of their head. Now, Slania wasn’t a swift as Layla or the other dealers. She wasn’t graceful in her movements like Eamonn or Fay were in battle. But, her kicks, punches and swings, when contact was made, were incredibly powerful. Her fist handed right on the attacker’s ear, leaving them to stagger to the side, and once they did, Slania delivered a heavy kick to the side of his head, which knocked the poor soul right out.
“Are you alright?” She asked Layla, pulling her up to her feet. Slania didn’t have to turn around to know that the others were just a few steps away, so she told Layla: “Go inside!” [d]

Her cheeks flustered red, as he squeezing watching Slania begin to attack him, with each smack to his ear he released his squeeze against her neck, the full kick to his rib cage staggered him to the side “ You can’t hide from us forever, we smell you, just as the one before” Layla watched in horror as Slania helped her back up to her feet. “ we both go inside together!” She took a hold of her arm “ once we step foot inside, they can’t touch us. “ she gave a face not knowing why it would work, but only it would. As she moved slowly with Slania up the lodge steps, as she kicked open the door. “ Dad..” she called out, as sitting at the table, sipping his tea, and older man stood, eyeing the pair. “ Layla, get my kit, your friend is injured.” He ordered, as Layla nodded (d)

Slania went right to the windows, looking out. She was on high alert, and being in a “safe” cabin would not settle her down. She was so distracted, she didn’t even greet the man Layla had called her father.
But, as she had a chance to stop and think, a thought disturbed her. It made her head hurt and she winced, holding the bridge of her nose with her thumb and index finger. But, once Layla returned with the kit, she turned around. She didn’t look panicked, and she actually didn’t feel it, much to her surprise. She was sure she would have entered a panic, especially after the lack of sleep and night terrors from many nights prior. Something was holding her panic back, but she didn’t know exactly what it was. But, Slania still looked rather perturbed. The blood stain on her trousers was darker that before, but the blood had begun to slow down.. “…Whose blood where they talking about, Layla?” She asked quietly, “Were they after us or… am I the one they were truly targeting?” [D]
thedawnbeauty
The older man moved back to the fireplace he didn’t want to be in the way of things, especially since he was a fugitive and his daughter asked to stay in hiding. He carefully handed the kit over to Layla to complete the work “ Check for infections, and put a drop of her blood in the fire, so we can test it.” Layla nodded back to her father and moved quickly to Slania side “ It’s going to be okay, I promise.” She pulled out a clean cloth dapping it gently “ Green or red?” She asked back to her father “ as he leaned over to see the blood was slowing down “ red, she can heal quicker with it” as Layla nodded again pressing a cloth against a red mixer potion “ this won’t sting, but it will help you healer father, my father is a mage.” She explained as the red potion was slow, but would slowly help develops a scar, as Slania asked her questions, Layla knew it would be good to withhold information “ Those men were stripped of their abilities, and when something special is nearby, they crave for it, my blood is useless them, but eyes however, if plucked could be useful, its where my talents rest. So, I think they were after you..” (d)

Now, perhaps to the surprise of the Creeds, the wound didn’t seem to heal quickly. Despite the potion, the wound only slow down her bleeding a little more, but that was all it did. Slania simply shrugged. “…That happens.” She flatly told Layla and her father. Keiran Riley, an angel, had tried to heal her when she was severally injured during the fires of Wexford, and it didn’t work. That was why Keiran had to resort to more drastic measures to keep her alive… When Keiran told her about it, that was when she began to realize that her body was resistant to certain magic. So, the potion not working as effectively as it should have didn’t seem to surprise her. “Thank you anyway. I appreciate the effort.” Slania added, and while her tone remained flat, she meant it.
Now, Layla did not need to withhold anything, because Slania already figured out they were after her. All she wanted was Layla to confirm it. “…That Morgan woman mentioned my blood. It’s because of my mother, isn’t it?”
After many years of suppressing things, something in Slania seemed snap. She balled her hand into a fist so tightly that her palm turned white. “I’ve done nothing but try to stay in the background, but people still go after me… first, because of my father. Then, it was because of Eamonn. And now … it’s because of my mother and her stupid decision to kill Gwen Blaine.” She spoke quietly, but something was off. When Slania’s eyes met Layla, she would be able to see it: growing rage.
Slania walked to the fireplace. She took the heavy fireplace poker, turned to walk to the door. “We should split up, Layla. You can stay here, with your father. You are connected to Carolina, the soulmate of my cousin’s. You’re beloved by my sisters, despite all these years. So, your safety is a priority now to me."

Creed remained quiet, years of pent up frustration was something he could understand, so he kept his eyes lowered on the ground while the girls spoke.
Layla was taken back when the red potion didn’t work like it should have, she wanted to immediately grab the green one, but when Slania said -that happens.- she was confused.
She remembered being hunted and bring the object of Morgan desires, and it was scary, but when she mentioned her mother, she stood up, “ It could be, your mother was really special like you.” She listened as Slania talked, but her eyes grew anger “ That was not a stupid decision, that saved thousands of lives.. she was kind and always helped people like you..” she watched as her take the poker stick and move towards the door. “ oh Slania.. “ she looked back to her father, who nodded he would be fine if she left
“ you are important and special, I haven’t seen in your sisters in so long, I doubt I am beloved. I am cursed to your cousin soulmate by a witch, and he is a murder.” She canted her head to the side. “ I can get you back to the manor, dad be useful and put one of those spells on us, so they can’t see us, so I can make sure she gets back.” She even moved to reach out and take hold of Slania hand “ I know I don’t have the right words, and I know you’re tired, let me get you back to the manor, make sure you get there safe.” ( d)

“…She didn’t tell my father.” Slania finally said about bouts of silence. “She went to battle with that woman, and my father didn’t know. He found out after it was all over, when she herself was at the verge of death. My father was beyond distraught. He was inconsolable. So, she made him a promise, and that promise would seal their fates.” Her eyes meant Layla’s. “Their mistakes would eventually cost them their lives.”
Slania looked down at the fire poker. Her head was throbbing at that point, but adrenaline was beginning to rush through her body, fueled by her growing fury. As a result, she was able to ignore the sharp headache. In fact, she no longer felt tired, or drained.
“Perhaps it’s a good thing you never returned. Mother would have wanted you to remember the Deirdre you left behind in Wexford. It was the happiest she ever was. You and my siblings share that. So don’t ever take those memories for granted. Don't do what Eamonn did.”
She then shook her head at Layla’s idea. “I don’t think it would work well on me. I can not risk you or your future getting into harm’s way because of me.” Slania meant her baby, of course. She didn’t want to say it outright in case her father didn’t know yet. Then, she then turned towards Layla’s father, “Thank you, sir, for your brief hospitality. I am truly grateful.”
Steps carried her to the door. She paused, and turned around. “I’ll meet you at the manor. Do not worry, I don’t mean to play a martyr. I want to survive. I want to live. I won’t allow Keiran’s efforts to be in vain…”
She trailed off, tilting her head. That last part was clearly not meant to be said out loud. But, rather than explain what she meant, she finally opened the door. “I am a seasoned warrior. I have to show these creatures what happens when you threaten a warrior. This is what I’m good at.”
With that, Slania ran out, into the depth of the woods. The Creeds would hear movements and rustling after her. Then, it all went still. [d]
