The tone of the conversation was making Eddie question more and more whether his surprise, supposedly cute gift was really a huge mistake.  “I really don’t think that this 50s minature bumper car is going to be haunted or possessed.  It’s not like it is a pendant that someone died wearing.  It has most likely just sat on a shelf gathering dust or shoved in a box until someone had a clear out.  But maybe I will just put it in a box and leave it for  a year or so and see if it appears to emit evil vibes just to be sure.”

Seeing the expression on the man made Clara giggle a little--not at his expense but she hadn’t meant to freak him out like that. “You’re right. Maybe it’s fine. I’m sure it’s a great cute gift. If you leave it for a year, though, what are you going to give instead?”

“I doubt there are many people who would leap out of bed during the winter.  Unless of course it’s to top up their blankets although they really should have come more prepared if that was the case.”  Abbie shook her head with a grin at the thought.  Looking with interest she smiled, “I don’t know that many second-hand clothing stores I must confess.  I have used Albie’s a couple of times when I have needed formal dresses but thankfully that hasn’t been too often.  There is nothing quite like having time for a good rummage through the racks of a store though.”  She glanced at the phone in her hand as if on instinct at the mention of a tow, “Oh no, my car is with the mechanic just now.  He said he didn’t think it was serious so I’m hoping to hear from him soon.  Are you on your way to the library now or are you picking up coffee first?”

“Oooh, I have found some cute tops at Albie’s but they’re usually very rare finds. The Treasure Cove is one of my favorites. It’s closer towards the boardwalk so you’d think there’d be lots of tourists but it’s actually hidden away. Though that does also mean they’re a little pricier than most thrift stores but the quality of stuff in there is much better!” Tilting her head, Clara watched as the woman checked her phone before smiling in response. “Coffee first. I also promised I’d pick up one of those large coffee travelers for everyone at the library.”

“Of course it’s not a good idea, it’s one of mine!”  Lauren retorted with a laugh and pointed to a nearby house.  “But how else can I get onto that roof unnoticed?”

“That... that is a valid point. Honestly, I don’t think I could counter that, but then that just sounds dangerous!”

“A certificate?” Eddie questioned in surprise. “No I don’t have a certificate but I bought it at the antique market and they have checked all their suppliers, or at least I thought they did.”

“The antique market? Oh man, I love those sorts of shops; you can really find some cool stuff there. But if it’s legit, usually there’s a certificate or something. Oh god, what if it’s haunted or possessed or whatever? So many of those old items have got some weird, creepy vibes.”

“It is but I am usually up before that if I have appointments starting at 8 and then there are the days I have early shift and my appointments start at 7.30, now that can be a killer, especially in the winter,” Abbie chuckled.  “I was planning to go and do some shopping in Eugene so decided that I would get in early but my car is playing up so it’s with the garage right now.  I’m going to grab a coffee while I wait and just hope it’s nothing serious.”

“The winter! When it’s cold out, all I wanna do is stay tucked into bed like a burrito,” she giggled, her arms wrapping around herself. “I love going to Eugene! They’ve got such cute second-hand clothing stores. That sounds like a very productive Saturday, minus the car part. Do you need to call a tow or anything?”

Eddie’s jaw dropped as he looked in surprise.  “Is it?  I thought it might be sort of romantic.”

“Look, I don’t want to judge your, well, judgment but... it feels super suspicious. Like, did you get that gift verified? With a certificate?”

“Isn’t that always the way though.  The day you really could sleep is the one you have commitments.  I had a late start on Thursday but was wide awake by six thirty and it was so annoying.”  Abbie gave a short chuckle, “Never mind I am sure it will give you good karma or something.”

“Six thirty!” Clara laughed in disbelief. “That’s too early for anyone to be awake. Even in college, the earliest I ever managed consistently was 7:30 and that was so I could get to my 9am on time.” She ran a hand through her hair and sighed. “Good karma is all I could ask for. So why are you up early on a Saturday?”

“Oh man, you’re telling me!” Clara stifled a yawn, arms stretched out for a moment before she gently smacked her lips. “I so wanted to sleep in today but I promised I’d volunteer at the library this morning. Present me is very upset with past me.”

Scrappy and excitable, Clara freshly graduated from college only a year ago and is now experiencing the “adult” world. For Clara, she has never really gone too far away from Aldridge. Even after high school, she stayed in town and attended the local college for her education. She finds a lot of comfort in her town but she doesn’t mind seeing it change. 

Clara was actually adopted by the Becketts and grew up in a very loving home. Her adoptive older brother had become incredibly protective of her and the two have a loving relationship. Everywhere he went, so did she–sports games, summer camps, movies, and as they grew older, even parties. And for all of that, Clara was grateful and it was because of him, she was able to really become her own person. Even now, any time she faces trouble, he is often the first person she calls.

In college, Clara majored in film studies and she one day hopes to work in that industry. In fact, it was all those times growing up and watching movies with her brother that really sparked Clara’s interest in films and movies. She definitely has a long way to go and while she’s not certain what path to take, she’s hoping taking some time away from school will help her figure things out. In the meantime, she’s working at the local movie theater box office. It’s not the dream yet but she wants to enjoy life for what she can too before going off to chase a profession she’s not certain about.

What is their opinion about the boardwalk and its effect on the town?

Clara absolutely loves the boardwalk, especially during its peak season. To her, it’s a place of fun and excitement, and even though it’s change, it’s good change! Aldridge Bay needs to not be so stuffy and go with the times. Plus, Clara needs a place to go during the summer that isn’t so far away that her parents would get worried.
