Ice Cream Sandwiches
“You two will stay in here until you both finish cleaning the dishes from lunch time and reflect on your actions.”
Two girls sit on the cafeteria benches both covered in marinara sauce. Strands of spaghetti dangle their hair and the pieces of meatballs are found on their clothes. Red marinara sauce is smeared on the floor and walls of the room.
“Why do I have to clean up? Sally started it!” Patty exclaims.
“Me? I didn’t! I’m not the one who threw the spaghe…” Sally’s voice trails off.
“Enough!” Miss Gabs roars, “Both of you made this mess which means both of you must clean up your own mess. Consider this a life lesson for the both of you. You girls used to be best friends, what happened?” Miss Gabs walks out of the cafeteria.
Silence persists in the room until Patty grunts and walks to the kitchen.
“Well?” Patty looks up and flings her hands at Sally, “the mess isn’t going to clean itself.”
“Woah.” Patty stands at the door, shocked by how many stacks of dirty plates there stacked above the kitchen counter. Flies are flying above the stacks, a tangy smell from the garbage that was from yesterday filled the air in the kitchen.
“Eh, I can’t even blink in” Sally says as she tries to rub her eyes, “Ok, there are too many dishes. We need to divide the roles. I’ll clean the dishes and you will dry them then we will put them away together? Deal?”
“Ugh, always telling me what to do.” Patty exclaims.
“Just hurry up, I don’t want to be any longer than you do. Pass me a pair of gloves?”
Patty throws a pair of rubber gloves to
In silence, the girls diligently clean the dishes. Hand in hand they clean the dishes together.
“You know, we are in this because of you.” Sally says.
“Me? What did I do?” Patty asks.
“You know ever since you started eating with the ‘popular’ group, you aren’t the same. You act like them and that’s not you.” Sally explains.
“You know it’s not like that. You are just jealous that there are other people who wants to be with me.” Patty protests.
As the girls finish drying the dishes and are almost done putting them away.
“I’m sorry,” Patty says, “Since we are in separate classes, I had to start making new friends and I guess I did forget about you while doing so.”
“I understand that you are enjoying time with your new friends. It’s just that I felt like you did not need me anymore and that I never get to spend time with you anymore, not even during breaks. Eventually, I gave up because I thought you didn’t want to be friends with me anymore.” Sally says
“I guess I can see how you see it that way…I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel that way.”
“We are best friends, and best friends will stay with each other despite anything,” Sally smiles at Patty, “can we go back to being friends?”
“Deal.” Patty sticks out her pinky, “Pink promise it?”
“You bet.” Sally laughs with Patty. After they finish putting away the dishes, the girls lay on the clean cafeteria tables.
“Ugh, I am so sore and tired from washing dishes,” Sally complains, “who would have known that cleaning dishes would actually be so tiring? I wish we had something to eat.”
“Oh! I know, give me a second.” Patty jumps off the counter, “I think they have some left over ice cream sandwiches in the freeze.” Patty runs back into the kitchen, “Gotcha! Here it is!” Patty passes an ice cream sandwich to Sally.
“Thanks.” Sally smiles and takes the sandwich. The two girl sit and
“Hey, remember when you drank that glass and your snorted it out of your nose” Sally says and laughs at Patty.
“Hey! You better not tell anyone about that time.” Nagged Patty.
“As if! The only person I would want to tell is my best friend, and that’s you.” Sally smiled and hugged Patty. The girls continued to sit and eat their sandwiches.
