A Plate of Double Chocolate Chip Cookies
Knock, knock, knock.
“Who is it?” a forlorn man rises from his chair in the middle of a gloomy empty room and shouts in a raspy voice.
“It’s me Jake from next door. My mom baked too many cookies for the holiday so she wanted me to give you some.”
Knock, knock.
“Mr. Fin? Hello? Are you still there?” Jake continues to bang on the door.
“What!” Mr. Fin runs and opens the door to a boy dressed in a tacky red hat, wearing red mittens and a large red parka, and holding onto a plate filled with cookies.
“Cookie?” Jake stands confidently and with strikes a charming smile.
Mr. Fin grunts at him. “Go home and leave me alone, kid.”
BAM! Mr. Fin slams the door on Jake.
Jake knocks again but softer.
“Hey Mr. Fin, I promised my mom to deliver these freshly hot baked cookies to you and to also invite you over to have dinner with us. The turkey is almost done cooking and we got pies tonight.”
“Kid, I told you to leave me alone. Tell your mom that I declined her invitation. I just want to be alone.”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought, but you see, I promised my mom that you would join us for dinner.” Jake scratches his head. “So, I am not leaving here until you come with me for dinner.”
“Kid like I said, I just want to be alone…” Mr. Fin replies.
“I thought so. It is getting a little bit too cold out here, if it is possible, can I please come in to warm up for a bit before heading back?’
Click, click. The door opens. Mr. Fin stands in his robe. “Fine kid. Come in.”
Jake runs into the house. “Oh phew! A fireplace!” Jake places the plate of cookies onto the table and kneels down to warm his fingers by the fire.
Mr. Fin shuts the door and returns back to his seat facing the fireplace in the living room. The living room only consists of a cushioned chair facing the fireplace and the rest of the house is too dimly lit to see the rest of the house. Jake looks up to Mr. Fin.
“I know things after Dorothy’s passing has been hard and you would prefer to be alone, but I believe the holidays are about spending time and having a hearty dinner with your family and with people who cares about you. And I am pretty sure if Dorothy was here, she would agree with me.” Jake places his hand on Mr. Fin’s shoulder.
Mr. Fin wipes his nose and nods. “I miss her a lot, kid. Christmas was her favorite holiday.”
“I know.That’s why I wanted to be the one to invite you over and bring you these double fudge chocolate chip cookies with the chunky chocolate Dorothy always liked. I remember that it was her favorite.”
Mr. Fin gazes at the plate of cookies and chuckles at Jake.
“You are a good kid, you know Jake?”
