This whole 6° of cancellation thing has to stop. We need to allow people grace and room for doing stupid shit. And I’m not talking about the people who actually do the bad shit. I’m talking about people who cross paths with them briefly and then everybody thinks that means that they’re best friends when they’re not, at all. Or omg if you liked the person who crossed paths with somebody that means you’re terrible too.
It’s just fucking stupid. It’s moral superiority Olympics. It’s virtue signaling. It’s performative outrage. Because I can almost guarantee you there is somebody that you like, watch, enjoy or even associate with who is problematic as fuck and either you choose to ignore it or you don’t know about it and so therefore you need to give yourself grace too for not knowing, and therefore having a chance to remove yourself from their presence, but you also need to give other people grace for the same kind of situations.
People wanna sit behind their screens and absolutely eviscerate somebody and slander their character, not based on their own behaviors, but based on behaviors of somebody that winds up in their orbit briefly and not even personally.
That girl is not friends with that man. She’s not even a big fan. It was a last minute thing. She wasn’t even aware of most of the awful stuff, truly. I wish she would publicly clarify that, but odds are she’s prob just hoping it all blows over and goes away. And that’s on her being young and kind of dumb and her reps being terrible advisors. You cannot give fuel to bullshit, but sometimes you should shut things down. That’s how I’ve always viewed it, but not everyone does.
At some point people are gonna have to get off this girl’s neck. She can’t breathe without people accusing her of things that aren’t true. Just because she was too good, too soon, too popular.
She’s not a racist. She’s not MAGAt. She’s not a bad person. Enough is fucking enough.
Being anti-racist doesn’t mean going after good people who make mistakes or have blind spots that they need to grow from and treating them as if they are irredeemable and they’ve committed a grave crime from which they can never return — it means going after people who are actually racist. It certainly doesn’t mean you then embrace misogyny, phobia, and vile evil rhetoric that makes you no better than any other hateful trash that set out to do harm to other human beings.
If you are doing victory laps because you were actually hoping there was more racism in the world, and you’re treating a misunderstanding as a gotcha to kick your feet and giggle over… I think you need to take a long hard look at what you’re actually about and what you think you stand for.
