shane hollander is THEE only child of all time

only child shane is very important to me…along with being neurodivergent i think his only child tendencies made him seem much older at a young age. i just picture little shane as this baby faced and freckled child but since he has only really been around adults he talks and acts like a little businessman trapped in a 8 year olds body and it’s just like:

little shane hollander who doesn’t quite know how to talk to kids his age cause he’s used to talking to his parents

little shane hollander who sits across from david in the mornings reading the newspaper/new yorker and doing the sudoku and crosswords

little shane hollander who is hyper independent and can put on his hockey gear all by himself by age 5

little shane hollander who instead of going to lunch with the rest of the kids stays in the teachers classroom to talk with them and has surprisingly developed opinions on the current political and economic state of the world (he listens to CBC radio)

little shane hollander who talks to his stuffed animals and has very elaborate rules and scenarios made up for them

little shane hollander who’s parents try VERY hard not to spoil him but he is so well behaved and polite and has the cutest and biggest brown eyes so he basically gets everything he asks for. shane knows that when yuna or david say “ill think about it” to something it’s basically a yes

I see a lot of posts about how Shane feels at Ilya becoming his parent's favorite, and how he would love or resent it or have a complicated relationship with it or--

Guys it's not true. It's a running joke. They're using it to reassure Ilya that they like him a lot (which is why Shane loves it) but it's not like. Real. Shane is their favorite. They spend a lot of time with Ilya and they truly enjoy his company and love him but Shane is their baby. He's the favorite. That's the joke. If it was true they wouldn't say it, they're saying because everyone there knows it's a joke.

Like, I'm sorry, but if Hollanov has a bad break-up the Hollanders are OUT. They'll be nice if they run into each other in the supermarket, or something, but there is not going to be further contact. Ilya is not going to come over for puzzles anymore. Unless Shane and him have kids when they break up, which would be a whole different animal, Ilya would lose Hollander rights and become a family friend they don't have contact with. Because his role in the family is to be Shane's partner, and as much as they love him, they're always going to choose Shane.

Shane is Yuna's favorite son and everyone involved knows it and approves 100%
