gotta take the pupperino into the vet tomorrow for her shot (it’s okay they love her there) and every night I go to bed and click the first ‘silent hill 2 is my fave game’ that exceeds three hours i haven’t watched to drift off to. tell me about your james. i love how he’s different from mine. and sh2 encourages that!!

she’s fun at pride! she doesn’t know what to do at first (she never does) but if she’s in catgear (she’d prefer to be) she’ll eventually draw attention. and then the easy mask slips on and she feels electrified joy. chappell through the speakers like a hymn and she’s leaping around in 7 inch stilettos and being throw microphones. she cartwheels through the crowd. she loves being precisely that, precisely there, fully accepted for who she is. someone hands her a lesbian flag and she tucks it happily into her utility belt with a warm smile.

she’s actually fantastic in crowds and group settings. always expect that she will slowly morph into making a scene. she has it under control. just trust her and play along. sometimes she’s a Barbie girl in a Barbie world.

if u attend pride (and selina has attended multiple prides in multiple states) you own an ‘I DANCED WITH CATWOMAN AT PRIDE’ if you did. she has enough in a foldable tote of surprising size. it’s massive IMPACT meme font. it is also an almost public joke about what a lowkey extrovert selina is.

she kisses the side of her hand as if seeking a reference, and glances at the shape of her own mouth to find a scale for his. she taps his cheek lovingly, twists open lipstick, and begins.

“….i was gonna say monkey but i thought you’d think it was dumb.”

her cheeks flush a pearl pink. she keeps artfully outlining, flips her cosmetic mirror from her pocket, round and gold gucci, so the omnic’s reflection might be visible to him.

“you look gorgeous. jealous. you’re the best shape. all your angles are so soft. kinda sucks i can’t do mascara on you.”

she watches the mirror float. and her mouth breaks into an impossibly enormous smile. a delight the likes of which even the monk has never seen takes its place on her lovely lips. she almost hops in place, elated.

she lets him touch her, guide her in accentuation, and she’s never been happier.

“oh, no, better. better. that blush is inspired, zen. —i wish i had my gold eye makeup, you’d look fantastic.”

a genuinely elegant palette.

selina doesn’t remember her father’s voice. or face. this makes everything worse, because it means every man just becomes the image of a father she can no longer clarify. it’s the trauma and the repression, but a dream, a voice will briefly unscrew the lid to pandora’s box. she doesn’t know sometimes if she wishes she could just peel the band-aid off and remember or if she’s grateful that she doesn’t.

it’s absolutely insane that my selina backstory is VERY common if you’re writing a woman who’s traumatized in the specific ‘daddy issues’ (i hate that phrase) kind of way.

selina’s shockingly low-key at pride, but she’s often unable to remain that way. she’ll let bruce do her lesbian makeup palette and she’ll try to stay on the outskirts but bruce is far too aware of how extroverted she really is so it’s not throwing her to the wolves, it’s pushing her at enrichment. it’s also not as if any of the batkids or harleen won’t drag her in at any given moment. plus, she really likes to dance.

huntress doesn’t know how many times she has to hit the brakes and skid before they ever truly get there; she’s not afraid to speak her mind candidly, she has plenty of opinions she stands by — but she has feelings, too, about the kind of baggage these conversations masquerading as rooftop-slash-alleyway chitchat often delve into. strong ones, at that, and she refuses to let them out of the bag so easily.

“and then?” she finally counters, dryly. “sounds sweet in theory, but then what, catwoman? life’s grander than our origin stories, which are often times only the mere beginning. i don’t like dwelling on the past,” she takes another drag of her cigarette, exhaling smoke the other direction. “if dwelling is all i’ll end up doing, instead of, i don’t know, my actual job.”

jobs, plural, but the cat-burglar doesn’t need to know that.

the cat’s eyes roll. remarkable as it is, she insists on being the tough guy, and yet, hypocritical, she is exasperated with what she perceives as the tough guy. the visage is something that’s read to her as a facade. perhaps it’s those blinders she’s often wearing — no one can be sincere in their statements, a haunting is a haunting even if they won’t verbalize it.

a cigarette swiftly finds itself between ruby red lips and she flips out a zippo from within the lack, hovers before it as lip stain leaves itself ever-present against a filter. the catwoman is laissez-fair where the huntress is tightly wound — for all her anxiety, she is all loose joints and muscles, loose elbows and knees. she exhales in great relief.

“forgive a cat for being nice,” she draws the cigarette in and flips it out again like a charming magic trick, “yeah, you don’t dwell on the past. d’you think it doesn’t dwell on you?”

“nobody well-adjusted runs around in the middle of the night with weapons. just making observational conversation.”

honestly selina has SO MUCH internalized ableism and lesbophobia and it’s literally entirely pointed at herself. everyone else is permitted to have needs that require attention but her? no. she’s so rough at herself about it. she’s always a stupid baby or a fucking liar. the fact that she’s slept with men makes her struggle so badly with her sexual identity, even if she’s literally positive it is gay. she’s far, far harder on herself than she would be on absolutely anyone else.

she has infinite patience for holly. all the antics she gets up to, every rebellious choice, every simple cancelled set of plans because the poor kid’s too overwhelmed, selina takes it with infinite grace because her own neurodivergence as a child was so policed and ignored. if a young selina felt she couldn’t answer or she couldn’t perform a task, she received a severe beating for being ‘defiant’ or ‘difficult’. and she internalized that belief. eventually, everyone else deserved agency, but selina does not. in her eyes, she was entirely deserving of her abuse because she is, uniquely, unlovable, a child born and therefore designed to be raised only in suffering.

the conditioning worked in that selina objectifies herself before you ever can. she already thinks about herself as nothing but a weapon, it is impossible for someone to hurt her by removing her personhood. she characterizes herself with the understanding that she must hurt because it is intrinsic to only her. she goes out of her way very hard to keep others safe who she cares for, especially children. but to talk about herself as a child is to understand selina resents and is very disgusted with who she was. which is violently irrational. the role of ‘ontologically bad’ was thrusted onto her by her stepfather. she’s chosen to wear it with pride, and it is extraordinarily difficult to even get her to feel okay with herself.

as for her sexuality… awful. she sleeps with men she doesn’t like to do things she doesn’t like and profit enormously from them. it’s the worst situation imaginable and it fucks with her ability to see herself as a lesbian because shes gold-starred herself into oblivion. when she starts to understand hetcomp it becomes something that’s incredibly stark for her to connect to. wow, that sure was her. this takes her long into her forties to finally manage to wrestle with, because long until then selina lives inside selina’s rules. and it works but it’s extremely stressful. making peace with herself does wonders for her emotionally (shocking!!!!). this also means daphne comes out as bisexual. which is actually different from selina and, thanks hollywood, the worst place that pays her bills, leaves her wiggle room to pretend men have any shot with her. but it’s extremely freeing.

she’s complicated. she’s exhausted by it. this is what keeps her up at night. her stomach grumbles loudly with nothing but an autocannibalizing guilt over milk tea.
