What happened in Orlando has been on my mind a lot today. I made the mistake of reading a few of the comments here in Australia and overseas about the situation, and the negative people fell into two camps - a) The victims are irrelevant. They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Stop making it about the gay agenda. b) (and this was sickening) ‘Serves them right’.
This distressed me a lot because the victims are the whole damn point. It was Latino night at the most prominent queer nightclub in Orlando, as part of a monthlong celebration of Immigrant Queer Month. Society has treated gay people as less than human for so long. Have treated People of Colour as less than human for so long. It became acceptable in the mind of a man that he could take a semi automatic rifle and shoot over one hundred people because he didn’t like that they could kiss whoever they wanted openly on the streets of Miami. This had nothing to do with religion. This had nothing to do with mental illness. This had everything to do with bigotry and homophobia.
