i just thought about the possibility of ryland telling rocky more about yáo and ilyukhina during their long trip back to erid. he speaks to rocky about their personalities, what they liked, and how brave they were to sign up for a suicide mission to save humanity. and at the end, he tells rocky how he made a small funeral for them, just by himself alone in space.

when ryland would eventually die, rocky would tell everyone he knew about his closest friend, grace. he’d talk about grace’s personality and what he liked. but most of all, how brave he was. how much courage he had, and his love for both humanity and eridian life, that helped him keep going. (and although unlikely, if the eridians decided to let his body rest in space instead of erid, rocky’s last words to grace would be, “grace, i commend your body to the stars.”)

I love the idea of Grace occasionally habitually slipping into Rocky’s speech patterns, but I’m even more obsessed with the idea of Rocky (who likely had to modify his own language much more heavily for Grace and his translator to understand it) occasionally slipping into his “talking-to-Grace” pidgin around other Eridians.

Like, Rocky will come home one day and be like “Adrian have good day working on Grace habitat dome, question.”

And Adrian will just go, “Yes, dear. We’ve made some good progress on the lighting adjustments. I take it you paid the aforementioned Grace a visit this afternoon?”

And Rocky, switching back to standard Eridian speech patterns and positively dripping tonal indicators for affectionate sarcasm, is left to reply “However did you guess?”

(They both lose it laughing. This happens several times a week)

Eridian Scientist ‘Linecook’: *excitedly putting something sealed through the airlock for Grace* Have made new drink for human to try.

Grace: thanks, Linecook, that’s very nice of you. *takes a sip through the pouch, frowns, takes a more forceful approach* huh… *gags*

Linecook: Does Grace not like it?

Grace: *gags again* no it tastes fine, I just didn’t expect to chew it.

Rocky: *looking stern* Rocky told Linecook that Grace would not like.

Grace: *gagging harder as he contemplates taking another drink* Actually it just tastes like thick water, I just think it’s the worst texture I’ve ever pulled through a straw in my life *gags again*

Rocky and Linecook: *arguing, Grace is pretty sure insulting the others family line, but he’s also pretty sure these two are cousins so who knows*

Grace: You know, if you add some flavoring and made it twice as thick, it would be pretty close to an Earth dessert that I would like.

Rocky: *definitely judging*

Linecook: *extremely confused* -and the straw?

Grace: God no, once it’s at that point, we use utensils because it can hold itself up if it’s cold. I’ll use a spoon.

School teachers Ortiz!Rocky and Grace AU where Rocky is the computer science teacher and head of the engineering club at Grover Middle School and uses his own, custom built AAC to communicate They somehow don't cross paths that often, but the first time Grace meets him it's at a teacher's conference and Rocky is going off at another teacher for being ableist, and he's adjusted his AAC volume so he's essentially YELLING LOUD ENOUGH TO BE HEARD THROUGH THE WALL OUTSIDE and Grace immediately backs tf off and changes course because he's not getting into that drama, except Rocky notices him and corners him afterward to ask him about the paper because Rocky thinks it's brilliant. He also thinks it's really funny Grace called someone a staggering waste of carbon. oh and make hit pride month themed idk. Adrien in this AU is a world-famous dancer and Grace thinks both of them are pretty -> doesn't know what to do about that.
