Laura didn’t understand. It wasn’t that she hasn’t the capacity to do so, but just her experience, her conditioning, kept her from being able to. She knew she was in a basement, though it appeared more like the hospital room of the Facility. That’s what she didn’t understand. The differences were subtle; the smell of hope replaced the stench of fear, an IV bag hung near the bedside, though it was no longer connected to her skin. An attempt to help, however futile. The room was both terrifyingly familiar, and foreign.

She heard and smelled someone approaching before they were far outside the door. She went limp immediately, feigning sleep, keeping her shackled hands in a comfortable position. Whoever it was, Laura hoped the checked on her and left, no prodding or poking so she could find her way out of this place. She didn’t want to be locked up again, she wouldn’t let that happen.

     Milo walked over to the girl before taking a seat on the mattress beside her. She reached out to place a hand on her shoulder before stopping an inch above it. Upsetting or making her uncomfortable was the last thing Milo wanted to do but she wasn’t quite sure what she could do. Going against her better judgment, she placed her hand lightly on her shoulder.

          “I’m sorry to hear that. I know how that can be. Is there anythin’ that’ll help? Maybe a comfort song or item? Do you want to talk about it?”

The close proximity of the other woman made the girl tense, and Laura gripped the leg of her own pants tightly. She didn't want to hurt people that didn't deserve it, not if she could help it, anyway. It wasn't always that way. The hand touched her shoulder, and Laura ran on instinct, her claws sliding out between her knuckles. Her hand swiped at the hand on her shoulder, while her other pushed the woman back with a sneer. She succeeded in pushing herself from the bed, and she rolled back onto her knees.

"Don't touch me." She growled.

Laura pulled her knees to her chest. "They all are." She mumbled, staring down at the mattress.

“Will you please tell me what they’re about?! How do you expect me to help if you don’t tell me?!” “You should go and see someone about those nightmares. They’re only getting worse, aren’t they?” “Can we sleep with the lights on?” “I haven’t slept peacefully in weeks.” “I can’t tell you my nightmare this time… It’s too bad, I don’t want to have to say it out loud.” “Can I sleep in your room? I don’t think I’ll be able to fall asleep in my own bed.” “I’m sorry for waking you… I had a really bad nightmare.” “I can’t stop thinking about that weird dream I had weeks ago. It’s like it’s haunting me.” “You look exhausted. Bad night?” “Calm down, calm down. It was just a dream. It’s over now.” “You’re overreacting. Everyone has bad dreams sometimes. No need to get all weird about it.” “Are you still thinking about that nightmare? I’m sure it didn’t mean anything, okay? We’re not in a horror movie.” “You should go to the doctor. These nightmares are making you miss sleep and you’re always exhausted. Get help.” “How about you come and sleep in my bed? These nightmares are killing me.” “I thought you didn’t get them anymore.” “I guess it was a bad idea to watch a horror movie before bed…” “When will you finally tell me what they’re about?” “Wow, you look exhausted. Did you sleep at all last night?” “Oh my god, that was horrible… that was so horrible…” “How about you sleep in my bed for the coming days? It can be like a sleepover. I’m sure you’ll feel good enough and the nightmares will stay away!” “I can’t breathe! It was real, it was!” “Have you tried writing them down? “I don’t need protection.” Laura snarled angrily. It was her age, she knew it, and everyone expected her to be FINE with being treated like a delicate flower. She was a killer. A monster. She was created for the sole purpose of death and destruction. If anyone needed protection, it was this woman, mortal and soft. Laura wasn’t soft, she was hard and durable.

Angel took a deep breath and shook her head. “I never said that you needed it. I said I was going to provide protection anyway. You can take care of yourself, but you shouldn’t have to. You’ve been through way more than me, but that doesn’t mean I’m clueless.” Torture was something one didn’t forget, especially when it was figuring out how your powers worked. Forcing you to sit through one test after another to see how much you could take. That, Angel understood personally. “For the exact reason that I know you can handle it, I won’t lie to you. That admittedly doesn’t mean it won’t take me longer to answer some things. It’s how Xavier handled me, so it’s the only way I know to handle others.”

Laura snarled. "I don't w a n t your protection." Her hands clenched into tight fists, and her face screwed up in anger. "I am N O T a child. I am N O T a delicate thing to protect, like a puppy or a flower. I have taken care of myself f a r longer than you, or anyone, ever think about. You want something to protect? Go get a puppy from the shelter." No one understands, not really. She was made, not born, she was broken, beaten, unmade before she could talk and built back up to be a weapon. She was like a gun, just point and shoot. "I am not you. I will never be you. Charles spoke to me like an equal, if you can not do the same, I see NO reason to stay."

Headcanon

Laura was built to be a weapon, an assassin. She doesn't see her age as an obstacle because she's been this way since birth, and since age seven as far as her mutation goes. Pain and death and blood fall in her wake. When someone vows to protect her, she'll either scoff and comment sarcastically, or completely ignore the comment altogether. She doesn't see herself as needing protection from anything other than herself.

The bench wasn't comfortable, but it was better than the ground. Who knew what was lowered down there, and regardless of her ability to heal, pain was still pain. A newspaper acted as a blanket, and her jacket and bag were shoved under her head like a pillow. It wasn't a comfortable sleep, but it was sleep. Until some 'well meaning' asshole woke her up, and Laura sneered, her growl a warning. If he touched her again, her claws wouldn't be so nice.
