──How did you try to create the confrontation between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, who were once in a romantic relationship? In the film, it was impressive that their scene became a world of only two people.

David Yates: We were trying to deal with the canon problem. The overall relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald is in the timeline of Jo (JK Rowling)'s entire story of Harry Potter, where the final encounter between the two, especially the final duel, is in the canon. It comes out after this film. So I asked Jo, "I want to make these two people meet and put in a part of the duel." I imagine the last big duel in her story, probably towards the end of the series. Rather than stealing it, I wanted the two to appear together so that the audience could better understand their relationship. To achieve that, I created a visual language, to imply that the scene in which they appear will disappear and become a world of only two people.

In an attempt to reassure Jo in order to respect ideas that come later, it was made that in the actual canon, they meet in their own world, where others can't see. In the canonical terms, the encounter between the two and their relationships and conflicts will occur over time. The encounter between the two in this film will actually happen later, so in this film I decided to portray it as what is happening in the world of only two people.

Now this just gives me more questions than answers.

Does that mean they were the only ones that could see themselves dueling each other at the end? Did they vanish in the eyes of the others when the duel was happening? Did they really physically duel at all, or was that a mind-duel, like they were only dueling in their minds while their bodies stood frozen in the presence glaring at each other?

And what about the meeting at the restaurant at the beginning? Did that also happen “in their own world,” where no one else saw except the two of them? What about the muggle waitress then? Or was she part of their own world, whatever that means for them?

“The encounter between the two in this film will actually happen later, so in this film [it is portrayed as it] is happening in the world of only two people.”

Does “the encounter” mentioned here mean the restaurant meeting or the final duel at the end, or both? Were they all happening in their heads?

So after watching Secrets of Dumbledore:

!!!SOD SPOILER ALERT!!!

I got out of the cinema a few hours ago, and I'd like to mention a few things:

1. "the summer Gellert and I FELL IN LOVE" I couldn't believe my own ears. They could have used many other expressions, like "met" or "got acquainted", but no, WB really gave us the whole truth. They. Fell. In. Love.

2. Albus's blissed out face when he sees Gellert, the way he closes his eyes, I bet he can feel him in the room even if he doesn't see him, his magic; and my darling really looks like Gellert's presence is balm to his aching soul (and a bit like he's just had an orgams but it's just me and my dirty mind).

3. Once they're touching, the fight is over. Immediately.

4. Gellert is mad about the blood pact, and doesn't even try to hide it. One does not throw himself off of a cliff unless he's seriously done with everything.

5. Did Gellert use to cradle Albus in his arms the way he does it with the Quilin?

Something I admire and find incredibly fascinating ...

...about this movie is the emotional reversal when it comes to Albus and Gellert. Their stances in this film mirror each other and by the end of the film change to where the other one was originally situated (in a way).

"Because I was in love with you"

At the beginning Albus is enfeebled. He wears his emotions on his sleeves. Albus is the broken one. Whereas it seems like Gellert is able to detach far more easily. Gellert is fully focused on his political aim and single-mindedly heads towards glory by becoming Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards.

Gellert turns away from Albus and leaves him alone in the café / restaurant.

"Who will love you now?"

By the end Gellert ist enfeebled. He wears his emotions on his sleeves. Gellert is the broken one. Whereas it seems like Albus is able to detach, able to overcome due to the support of his friends and his own willingness to step up. Albus is far more settled with his feelings by that point.

Albus turns away from Gellert and leaves him alone in the mirror world / at the podium, confronting the Aurors.

I find this weirdly poetic.
