This is the first time I RP on Tumblr. I was inspired by L-Official's blog and I decided to go with my fav from the series :))

We thought of doing an actual rp of these two so why not have it as a bonus thing on here since it’s one of their days together.

“How much longer are you gonna take exactly?” Mello crossed his arms, watching Near work on his puzzle… he didn’t get why the other always felt the need to finish these in one sitting. It was a pain. At least this time Near chose to do it on the kitchen floor so Mello could at least make himself a coffee in the meantime…

He wasn’t excited per se about their outing. Not exactly… but the thought getting out of the headquarters again was nice. Last time they’d managed to handle the whole awkwardness of being handcuffed fairly well… and if they got lucky the store wouldn’t be particularly crowded.

Having Mello so close touching him made him shudder. However, he was adjusting the chain somewhat clumsily, so to avoid falling Near resorted to holding onto his waist, so he wouldn't lose his balance.

"I remember you customizing your clothes," Near watched Mello's adjustments closely. "Every week I waited to see what you came out of your room with. Your thought process is fascinating."

Mello’s hands suddenly felt so much sweatier, clumsier—as if he’d forgotten how to properly use them. ‘Kurva!’

He couldn’t tell if Near was being sarcastic or not, was it meant to be an insult? Was that some kind of joke? “You did?” He mentally cussed himself out for how… soft that sounded. “I—didn’t know you paid attention to much more than your puzzles.” It was a poor attempt at sounding harsh again, best he could come up with on the spot, he immediately regretted speaking up.

God he hadn’t wanted to disappear so badly in a while… but there wasn’t anywhere he could do, so he busied his hands, trying desperately to ignore Near’s eyes burning into him.

"I'm very observant, but you already know that. Besides, you caught my attention from the first day I arrived at Wammy's, Mello" Near sounded monotonous, yet sincere. "You were always making noise and playing with the other kids, but your thought process and way of seeing the world were captivating."

The hands on Mello's waist were starting to feel heavy. He was too aware of them, but he didn't want to retire them either.

Mello’s grip on his tightened. Not painfully. But noticeably so.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” He asked, he intended it to sound snappy, dismissive. Mello wanted Near to be embarrassed for his words and yet he came as if he were asking for reassurance. He hated that. He didn’t need reassurance. He didn’t need to know Near found him special as interesting. He really didn’t.

Mello could never accept a compliment without a fight. It was obvious to Near that he couldn't say anything to him without him trying to deflect it.

"Exactly what you heard, Mello, I'm paying attention to you." He knew that Mello would pick a fight with him anyway, so he didn't mince his words. In fact, following the train of thought that no matter what he did, he decided to squeeze Mello's waist, just to see what would happen.

Mello immediately tensed under his touch, he tried to look unbothered but Near noticed the way he froze momentarily, the way his own hands backed up a little.

“That’s a creepy ass compliment or whatever it’s trying to be..” Mello huffed, looking anywhere but directly at the other.

Mello's reaction wasn't as loud as Near expected. He wondered if he should go further.

Finally he let go of Mello's waist, but not before leaving a soft farewell touch. Near wasn't sure what else to do, and the thought of touching him also made him nervous.

"I'm just objective with the facts. If you want to take it as a compliment, that's fine." He waited for Mello to finish arranging the chains. "Should we look for a necklace?"

‘If you want to take it as a compliment.’ Of course Near had nothing genuinely nice to say to him. Why did Mello even bother assuming otherwise? He took a step back, desperate to get some distance between as he silently swore to himself for the umpteenth time that THIS was the last time he was humiliating himself that week.

“If you want to.” He shrugged. A cold expression on his face.

Near noticed Mello's expression. Had he offended him?

"Have I offended you?" Near asked in a genuine, concerned tone of voice. Of all he things I wanted to do, offending Mello wasn't among them.

Near suppressed his urge to hug him and continued talking. "Forgive me if I said anything wrong" he tried to make amends.

Mello rolled his eyes, “No you—“ he hesitated, Near was expecting a simple yes or no but… Mello suddenly felt unsure. “Forget. You’re just a creep is all.” There. That was good.

“So, do you want anything else or not?” He asked, not giving Near an opportunity to ask for any further explanations.

"Okay, fine," he said in a small voice, looking away. Near didn't want to talk much further on the subject.

"I've seen some chokers," he pointed behind Mello. "Maybe you'd like to see some for yourself too. I know you like that kind of thing." He wanted to try to get the topic behind him, distracting Mello with something that interested him. His heart was still beating a little fast from the excitement of touching his waist.

Hi Near, I was thinking about something... True story: at my graduation, we had to draw a flag with all the students in the class drawn on it. The task was given to the best artists in the class (a gay guy, a straight and exteoverted guy I didn't talk to much, and me). The three of us drew caricatures of all the students in our own style (I drew chibis because I was an otaku, they drew more original caricatures), and then we had to see which one we preferred. The straight guy drew us all in a very funny way, highlighting each one's characteristic features in an exaggerated way (he made one's ears really big, another girl's boobs really big, and so on). We laughed a lot at these drawings. I don't think he even intended for people to choose his drawing; he just wanted to have fun. But what caught my attention was that I was the only "character" he drew cute; he even gave me bows (which I didn't have). After graduation, he confessed that he was in love with me, lol... Well, I remembered your finger puppets. The only one you made pretty is Mello…

My appreciation for Mello is great since we grew up together. I have seen him in various facets and I was around him for a long time.

Maybe you're right and I made his puppet more detailed because I really like him, as a person.
