My hot take is that the sex scenes in Kafka on the Shore are, for the most part, good actually. You can fault the novel for a lot - the first 100 pages being agonising to read, the story being abruptly interrupted by an antifeminist rant delivered by an author-insert trans guy, the cheesy Inoue Yosui needledrop, the fact that Colonel Sanders is there - but like. The sex scenes are like that on purpose. It's not bad writing, it's writing that's making you uncomfortable for a reason.

I say "for the most part" because I do think the dream-sequence rape scene in the third act is quite bad. Not because it's morally offensive or poorly written - it's just way too provocative a setup for the wholly inadequate payoff that follows.
