Love Bug: "What's so funny?"
He was laughing at her. He had to be! “What’s so funny?”
The Medicine seller of Ri continued to look out at the ocean in his sprawled out state, his usual mysterious smile ever present. He didn’t give her an answer, but his lips seemed to tweak upward more at her question. “You shouldn’t scowl so much. It will age you quicker.”
“Ah! You’re so rude!” Kayo cried, scrunching her fists up as she glared at him. Then she forced her face to ease, his words striking a nerve. “Tell me what’s so funny! I know you’re laughing at me.”
“Yes, comment! You can’t avoid me- we’re stuck on this ship together for weeks!” Kayo gently shook him, her hands on his arm and side as she rocked his body. “I want to know what you’re thinking, so talk to me!”
“Acting pushy won’t help you ge-ehet a husband.” He seemed to twitch under her hand, stiffening all over. Kayo was about to pull her hands back when she heard the soft titter in his voice. “Careful now.”
“Oh?” Kayo’s voice took on a new note as she pressed into his side once more- curling her fingers. In response, the Medicine seller shivered all over, twitching at the feeling once more. “Are you ticklish, Medicine Seller?”
His eyes cut to her, blue and piercing. Despite the look he shot her, he didn’t feel ominous. Then he looked away once more. “Again, no comment.”
Kayo puffed her cheeks, then sighed. “Alright then.”
She pretended to stop, then…
“Got you!” She cried, jumping on his vulnerable state and running her fingers against his torso. “Got you, got you, got you!”
“Ah-ha!” The medicine seller yelped as he spasmed, trying to grab her hands. “Kayo, stahhap thahhat! This is ihihimprohoohper!”
“This is worth being improper!” She argued, too delighted by his reaction to care for social etiquette. “Tell me what’s so funny, Medicine Seller! Tell me or I’ll tickle you forever!”
“Hohohow dehheehvious! Ehahhaha, you muhuhusn’t threhahahhaten one suuhuhch as mihiihishehehelf!” He squirmed onto his back as he tried blocking her out, soft titters and giggles rolling off his lips despite himself. “Iiihih’m quihiihihte theehehe dahhahanger in rehehhehturn!”
“Ooo, scary! What, you gonna tickle me back? Good luck with that- I’m not ticklish!” Kayo’s bold declaration was immediately followed by a loud squeal when he did just that- grabbing her waist and pulling her into his arms. “MEheheheheehehdicihiihne sheheheheheller!”
“So much for not being ticklish.” He mused, grinning secretly against her hair as he gently clawed into her sides. He rolled them over so they were on their sides, unaffected by her kicking feet and shrieking giggles as he dragged out her laughter. “Didn’t I warn you I’m a danger to threaten?”
“Ehehehahahhahaha! EhahhahahAHH!” She cried, swatting at his back and arm. Her fingers brushed against his ears, making him yelp and duck away. Kayo took her chance to win, shoving both hands up and tracing his ears. “Ghooht you nohohow!”
“Ah! Aheahhahaha- nohohoho pleahahshe! Oohohohokay, ohohokay you win!” The medicine seller begged, a rarity for him. Kayo whooped with glee, holding her arms up high as she celebrated. Her hair had come loose in their game, falling like a river of chocolate against her bright kimono. The medicine seller suddenly couldn’t breathe as he stared up at her beautiful state.
“What? What is it?” She asked when she caught him staring, a pretty blush warming her tan cheeks. In response, he smiled gently, running his thumb against her face, tracing her lip.
