i like when the academic article is niche and the historian gets mean 😈
whenever there’s news about a cool new archaeological discovery and all the comments are shit about curses and “put that back” and “not now 2020″ as if ancient humans were malevolent entities filled with nothing but spite for their descendants instead of like, normal people just getting by in ways they knew how
like lmao i’m genuinely sorry if your first instinct upon seeing a little carved figure is “cursed, evil” and not admiration for how much more detailed it is than its contemporaries or speculation on whom it was supposed to be
The ancient Minoan language known as "Linear A," long untranslated, may finally be deciphered with the help of the internet.
HELLO??!!
Ok after calming my initial excitement and rereading the article, it seems like what Dr. Salgarella has demonstrated is that the Linear A script is more closely related to the Linear B script than previously understood – which is a completely different thing from the Minoan language represented by the Linear A script being related to the Mycenaean Greek written in Linear B. Still a huge breakthrough and I absolutely don’t mean to slight Dr. Salgarella’s research in any way! But I feel like the headline “Minoan Language Linear A Linked to Linear B” is misleading at best b/c of a (very common) misunderstanding of the orthography vs. linguistics divide; this is really a story about a breakthrough in paleography and not a full decipherment of Linear A or a demonstration of any genetic link between the two languages.
(from the article:)
Asked by Greek Reporter if there are exact translations of any Linear A writing at present, Salgarella demurred, but explained why finding many corollary symbols leads to hope that it will indeed be completely understood one day.
“I am afraid there is currently no exact translation of the sign-sequences (= words) attested on Linear A tablets (as well as other document types). This is primarily because we have not yet identified the linguistic family the Minoan language belongs to (unless it has to be taken as an ‘isolated’ language),” she replies. ”
this is an example of an objectively funny crime

salvete classics friends! i do come on here occasionally but i’m not that active anymore, i’m spending most of my time on my sideblog @dynamitehoseok to feed my current hyperfixation with bts :/ if any of you fit into the weird overlap that is classics nerds and bts fans you can follow me there haha
in the meantime i’ll be writing essays on how their song dionysus fits into the mythological tradition <3
