CMC Rescue and KASK America Supporting Yosemite Search and Rescue
CMC Rescue and KASK America partner to donate new helmets and visors to national park service rescuers and air crew personnel.
(Goleta, Calif.) — Each year, an average of 250 visitors are lost, injured or die in the 1,500 square miles of the mostly rugged terrain that constitutes Yosemite National Park located in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. In any given week, team members from Yosemite Search and Rescue (YOSAR) may extract an unconscious person from a wrecked vehicle, cross a swollen stream to reach a lost or stranded hiker, rappel from high atop the sheer granite walls of El Capitan or Half Dome or be hoisted from a helicopter to retrieve a severely ill or injured climber. YOSAR was established in the 1960s to respond to such emergencies with a cadre of trained professionals.
To help to add greater uniformity to the equipment cache of YOSAR rescue teams, CMC Rescue, Inc., in partnership with KASK America, has donated 32 Italian-made KASK SuperPlasma Hi-Viz yellow helmets and 12 clear helmet visors. The donation is valued at more than $5,000.
The new helmets will be used first at YOSAR’s rescue training held at Tuolumne Meadows in the eastern section of the park. The high-visibility yellow color with reflective and glow-in-the dark features will increase the team’s nighttime exposure. YOSAR’s helicopter rescue team will add anti-fog, scratch-resistant KASK visors to their helmets.
Specifically designed for professional rescue and work-at-height applications, Kask Super Plasma helmets are lightweight, compact, amazingly comfortable and well-ventilated. They are equipped with protective aluminum anti-intrusion grills to deflect debris and water. The outer shell is made of high-density ABS plastic designed to withstand significant impact, and the four fastening points of the chinstrap are designed to decrease the risk of helmet loss in case of an impact during a fall.
“We know that having the proper equipment for each critical call is of the utmost importance for safety and efficiency,” said Joe Flachman, CMC Rescue’s Business Development Manager. “Because our company’s mandate has always been to offer the best specialized equipment available for rescuers, we were pleased to partner with KASK America as a distributor and to jointly offer this donation to YOSAR.”
Gian Paolo Pasini, President and CEO of KASK America Inc. said: “YOSAR has been, throughout its history, one of the most innovative rescue organizations worldwide, especially with regards to Heli Rescue techniques. Hence, it is a great honor for us to support the men and women of the YOSAR team with our search & rescue helmets”.

CMC Rescue Partners with Direct Relief International to Aid in Disaster Relief Efforts
On April 25, 2015, Nepal was struck with a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake leaving over 9,000 dead, and thousands more injured or unaccounted for, and without food, shelter or sufficient medical care. In the wake of this catastrophic event, professional search and rescue and medical response teams from around the world were immediately deployed to aid in the recovery and treatment of survivors. In moments like these, we may ask ourselves, “How can I help?” As a business in the rescue community we are further compelled to ask, “How can we best support those on the front lines of rescue and emergency response?”
The answer came in 2010, in an inquiry from Direct Relief International (DRI), an internationally recognized non-profit organization that provides essential medical resources to poverty- and disaster-stricken areas. In preparation for their relief efforts, DRI sought a partnership with CMC Rescue to design and manufacture individual backpacks for aid workers to efficiently organize and haul medical supplies.
It’s not uncommon for CMC Rescue to design custom products for agencies with specific needs. In many cases, product innovations are born of this type of necessity. In DRI’s case, the packs they envisioned needed to be lightweight and durable–able to withstand the rigors and hazards of disaster zones–and designed with high-visibility, easily identifiable by individuals and other relief agencies operating in the congestion.
The resulting backpacks, designed and manufactured with the same quality and care that go into our trusted line of life safety rope and equipment bags, have served DRI well over the years, and in that sense we feel proudly that we’ve also helped to do our part to support the ongoing relief effort in Nepal, and around the world.
It is both an honor and a pleasure to have been granted the opportunity to work with DRI, an organization that is globally recognized for its outstanding work in disaster relief.

Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians SPRAT
This article was written and submitted by Matthew Waskiewicz, a SPRAT Level III Supervisor and Instructor as well as a SPRAT evaluator candidate (see full bio below).
The Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT) was founded in the mid 1990’s to address the growing work at height community in North America. CMC Rescue was there in the formative years as the organization developed, and continues to support the industry with technical data and equipment. SPRAT provides specific standards and legislation for companies providing Industrial Rope Access services, and is a member based organization. Companies or individuals can become voting members within the organization.
SPRAT continues to evolve as Industrial Rope Access continues to become a more accepted means of access. Industries of application include Oil and Gas, Wind Power, Geotechnical and Infrastructures. Certified Technicians are capable of accomplishing many tasks including inspection, maintenance, installation and repair. The basic concept is that employing companies can provide a means of accomplishing these tasks in a safe and effective manner for clients, workers and the public.
SPRAT documents include Safe Practices and Certification Requirements for all employers that utilize a two-rope system used as work positioning. Independent anchors, rope and connection to the technician ensure that a “backup” system is utilized at all times. A graduated certification process relies on a technician with appropriate levels of experience as part of the work plan, and above all else, a rescue plan being part of the work plan. Companies that work under the SPRAT system tend to provide a multitude of services. Clients often see an initial potential, address the proposed job scope, and often times are blown away by the safety and efficiency SPRAT certified teams can produce.
Certification sessions are hosted throughout the world as SPRAT continues to grow. These sessions are usually accompanied with a training course. Although SPRAT does not currently require training to pass the certification, it is recommended to even the most experienced in various rope crafts to attend a training course. The certifications available are Level 1 (Rope Access Worker), Level 2 (Rope Access Lead Technician) and Level 3 (Rope Access Supervisor).
SPRAT.org provides up to date standards on their web site. As the industry continues to evolve, these documents do as well. Interested in industrial rope access? Become a voting member and participate in the various committees tasked to ensure safety continues to be the priority for industrial rope access services around the globe.
CMC Rescue continues to provide the industry with innovative products as industrial rope access continues to grow. Where work at height was once done with limited equipment, there is now a variety of gear that can be utilized for various field applications. Stay tuned to CMC Rescue’s Command Post blog posts as we begin to take some of the industries newest equipment to the field and provide technical tips and equipment reviews.
Matthew Waskiewicz is a SPRAT Level III Supervisor and Instructor as well as a SPRAT evaluator candidate. He enjoys meeting people from around the world utilizing various industrial rope access applications, and sharing knowledge with others to enhance all work at height applications. To Move From Mediocrity To Greatness, We Must Venture Out
**This article was originally posted by Abseilon USA on their blog.**
The responses received from the last blog were remarkable; listening to the stories behind the messages from all who took the time to communicate their thoughts and ideas was genuinely inspiring. The result left us with one of the most precious resources: optimism, the optimism that together we can make a difference.
Making a difference in this industry is absolutely possible and within our grasp, and as simple as one important thing: listening.
Now is the time to listen to the opinions, concerns and input of peers within the industry. The last article granted us this ability, and it has been invaluable.
The point of An Uncontrolled Descent: The Free-Fall of the Rope Access Industry was to question the current system of the 40 hour course and gather the thoughts and ideas of those within the industry so that together there is a path forward for the betterment of the industry.
Those who commented and voiced their opinions about the article produced opportunities to explore different approaches to solve the issues we are facing as an industry. Although there was an array of ideas, we did notice a trend in the comments we received. The majority of responses, from a cross-section of the rope access community, shared the idea of an apprenticeship as a path forward and a need for additional training provided to those individuals entering the industry.
Why Apprenticeship is Right for Rope Access Certification
According to the US Department of Labor, Registered Apprenticeship is a tried and true approach for preparing workers for jobs, and meeting the business needs for a highly skilled workforce. This reason alone makes sense for Rope Access certification; it works for the industry and develops a skilled workforce. Feedback from the most recent blog recommended raising the bar for skill requirements and properly enforcing those requirements, followed by a sponsorship with a contract. In essence, this defines an apprenticeship, and we could not agree more that this is the most appropriate path to take.
Here are the Components of a Registered Rope Access Apprenticeship
1. Business Involvement. In short, employers need to be a part of the apprenticeship design process. In order for the program to be a success, businesses, business owners and hiring managers must play an active role about their wants and needs for future employees.
2. Structured, On the Job Training. Every sanctioned apprenticeship revolves around this concept, and a rope access apprenticeship should be no different.
3. Related Training and Instruction. Rope access in itself is not a trade, but a means of physical access to perform a trade. An apprenticeship in rope access would require education partners to assist in training apprentices in trades to perform while on line.
4. Reward for Skills Gained. Apprentices receive increases in pay as skills and knowledge increase. Progressive wage increases reward and motivate apprentices as they advance through training.
5. National Occupational Credential. Every graduate of a registered apprenticeship program receives a nationally recognized credential.
It’s time to make a difference. Encourage a discussion on the subject with your peers and above all, listen.
