SasuSaku from Boruto Episode 21
Before I start talking about SasuSaku from episode 21, I’d like to make sure that ‘Boruto ~Next Generation~’ is the story about 2nd generation of Naruto world, not 1st generation (ex. Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura). Therefore, it is important to remember that SasuSaku’s role in Sarada Gaiden is parents.
Sarada Gaiden is based on the original manga written by Kishimoto sensei, and the story is about SasuSakuSarada family and Sarada’s doubt about her family relationship because of Sasuke’s absence.
SP added few new scenes and made some scenes longer to illustrate mom side of Sakura, and dad side of Sasuke; and this episode shows how SasuSaku’s relationship developed in more mature way.
From the conversation scene between Sakura and Shizune, we could see why Sakura could not tell Sarada about her dad. Sasuke is currently continuing his atonement journey, and also investigating any potential enemy similar to Kaguya. If Sakura tells Sarada about his journey, she will also need to explain Sasuke’s tragic past and his sin, which is deeply related to his clan. Sarada is too young to understand what happened to her dad, and she will be shocked if she hears what happened to her uncle, grandparents, and her entire clan.
Sakura hopes Sarada grow up with bright personality. She thought it’s the best way to keep everything about Sasuke as a secret and keep Sarada away from his truth. However, Sarada ended up having doubt about her family relationship and decided to ask directly to Sasuke.
Sakura says “I failed as a mom..” since she didn’t consider that Sarada grows up and someday she won’t be a baby girl anymore who stays under mom’s protection. I really loved this scene as it shows Sakura’s challenge as mom (especially considering Sarada is her first child. Sakura is in process to become a good mom :) ) Moreover, we can assume that Sakura learned more about Uchiha clan from Sasuke such as how Sharingan is activated at first time, and maybe they talked a lot about Sarada’s future as Uchiha survivor’s child when Sarada was infant (imagine SasuSaku as parents caring about their first born baby!)
Now, let’s go to daddy side :)
While Sakura was worrying about Sarada at the hospital, Sasuke was interrogated by Sarada. Sarada asks bunch of questions to him: Why is he not coming back to home (not staying with Sakura)? Who is the lady (Karin) from the picture? What is he doing outside of the town?
As we all know, Sasuke is not good as giving nice words to people (even to his best friend and his wife). For the same reason as Sakura, Sasuke couldn’t answer any of Sarada’s answer. The answer he came up with was “It’s none of your business”. Sarada gets really disappointed and runs out of the tower.
Naruto tells Sasuke that he could’ve at least tell Sarada about his mission, and Sasuke says “Sarada has Sakura. She will be fine.”
His line shows that SasuSaku is a couple and parents, trusting each other and caring about their baby together. As I mentioned above, Sasuke and Sakura may have talked about Sarada’s future as Uchiha, the clan vulnerable to darkness from tragic love. Sasuke trusts Sakura will protect Sarada and prevent such things from happening to her. This represents that Sasuke sincerely feels Sakura’s love and how her love can be a light in Uchiha family.
After Sakura punches Uchiha Shin, Sasuke and Sakura look at each other without saying anything. Someone might think ‘they are so cold! Why aren’t they saying a word??’
Sasuke probably kept quiet because he didn’t know what to say to her since he felt so sorry to her. Do you remember this scene from episode 16?
Sasuke: “Naruto, please tell Sakura that… I’m always sorry to her” - Boruto ep 16
YES, Sasuke cares about Sakura and he does feel sorry to her for leaving her alone in the town with their daughter. If Sasuke was good at starting conversation, maybe he could’ve said “Hi honey.. How have you been? I’m really sorry that I’ve left home for very long and I missed you and Sarada…”
Unfortunately, Sasuke is a type of person who is bad at expressing his feeling directly, especially when other people are around him, he keeps silent and just looking at Sakura.
Sakura also looks at Sasuke without saying anything, but smiling. I interpreted her smile as ‘Hi honey, I’m glad to see that you’re doing well.’
This scene was the most impressive one in this episode because it emphasizes that SasuSaku’s relationship has developed in more mature way.
From Naruto and Naruto Shippuden, Sakura was a teenage girl who got blushed in front of guy she likes (=Sasuke), and dedicated to her romantic relationship. Whenever Sasuke appeared, Sakura used to focus on only him, put him as her top priority, and said “Sasuke-kun!”
In this scene, all Sakura did to Sasuke was smiling at him. Smiling at him was an enough expression in this situation to show that she loves him and glad to see him.
And then, Sakura hugs Sarada saying “Thank goodness you’re okay”.
I really appreciate SP for showing how Sakura’s attitude toward her relationship with Sasuke became more mature as mom. If Sakura was more interested in Sasuke than her daughter in this scene, I would’ve been very disappointed, thinking “what kind of mother is she?!”
After hug, Sakura talks with Sasuke about Sarada. Voice actors’ work in here was amazing as they really sounded like parents concerning about their baby!
Sarada is SasuSaku’s child. Her existence already implies that Sasuke and Sakura love each other, which will be drawn in the next Sarada Gaiden episodes.
I think from Boruto anime in general, both Naruto and Sasuke are having difficulty being a good dad to their children. Interestingly, Naruto and Sasuke both didn’t really get much love from dad (Minato passed away when Naruto was born and Fukaku was very strict dad, not directly showing love to Sasuke).
