Listen this dickhead was 100% the kind of teenager who thought he ruled the town let’s just get that clear

Played quarterback like his dad and his dad’s dad and probably 8 other Mitchums before him

Took his team to the playoffs his sophomore, junior and senior years

Won a state championship as a senior (’07) and graduated in ‘08

Went off to college thinking he was hot shit he was okay and had a good run with the University of Georgia

Was drafted in the first round by the New Orleans Saints which was awesome until it wasn’t because his first game on the field he got tackled and broke his arm so badly he’ll never play professionally again and trust me it  c r u s h e d  him

He had a nice lil bout of being a whiny brat after the surgery that repaired his arm when he got back to town but then his old coach hit him up to take a coaching position at the HS and he took him up on it

Head coach (finally) retired last year so Tate’s worked his way up to Head Coach and this will be his first season leading the team

He’s 100% too confident for his own good tbh, always has been and always will be probably

Post accident Tate has a lil bit of a bigger anger management problem but the kid has always been pretty laid back when the stakes are low (so any time football’s not involved, basically)

Billie glanced up from the improvised sculpture of rib bones she was attempting to construct, the tip of of her tongue resting at the corner of her mouth in concentration. Her brows knitted in sympathy for his plight, every year around his time it was the same and she took it upon herself to alleviate his stress anyway she could. Bringing him lunch was the least she could do. She didn’t have any experience with such physically and mental taxing professions. There certainly wasn’t any hidden pressure when one scooped ice cream for a living aside for the promise of increased clientele during the scorching summer months. At the mention of such a rigorous training regiment her nose wrinkled in distaste. Billie’s stomach turned at the thought of spending any amount of time at a gym. Whenever she put actual effort into exercising she always ended up hurting herself or burning out almost immediately. 

“Do you really need to exercise that much, you’re already plenty…sturdy” she snorted, poking his arm to prove her point. It was like a solid brick wall. She jumped slightly when her bone tower came tumbled to the desk top. “Oh? What’s got you chipper then? Has Mama Mitchum been baking again?”

Sometimes, Billie really amazed Tate. How they could be so incredibly different, almost down to the tiniest of things, and still be the best of friends was always something he’d found a little impressive. As she poked him, Tate couldn’t help but flex and give her a wink, knowing full well that she wasn’t wrong. “Yeah, but if I stop, then I lose all this hard work, and we can’t have that, can we?” He laughed at the question of his mom’s baking, shaking his head. “Buffalo Bill, you really think that’s what’s got me feelin’ this way?” He looked at Billie with an expectant look, hoping she’d catch his drift, before finally spilling out with a “Kenz and I are havin’ sex. Lots of sex, Billie.”

This was going to be far from easy, Tate had once been his closest friend, and while Luke wouldn’t admit now that he’d not been the best guy either, Tate still dated his sister and broke her heart. Now he was aiming for a round two? But he’d made Kenzie a promise. “So she thinks.” He replied initially, ordering a beer for himself when the bartender came by. “I’m gonna be real honest, Tate, I don’t trust you, but Kenz is an adult, and we aren’t teenagers anymore. I’m not gonna tell you to stay away from her.”

“I know, and I don’t blame you for not trustin’ me. I wouldn’t trust me if I were you, either, but that doesn’t make what I’m sayin’ any less true. Kenz matters to me, Luke, a lot. I really do feel differently about her than I have in a long time.” Taking in a slow breath, Tate rubbed his hands together slightly, avoiding looking at Luke’s face as he said what came out of his mouth next. “I didn’t think I could ever feel this way about someone but I do. I can’t just walk away from it.”

“Shouldn’t you be stuck to a beautiful blonde’s side?” She teased, eyes playfully glaring as she looked up at Tate. He’d managed to sneak up on her, and she jumped so easily she was mostly mad about that. “Fussin’ with flowers is easier than facin’ everyone wonderin’ why I’m alone this time.” She replied with a gentle shrug, not really bothering to explain. She didn’t want to sound petty or jealous, Magnolia was happy for Kenzie. It just made her own single status painfully obvious. “She looks radiant on your arm too, I’m happy to share.” This earned a little giggle from her, she really was happy for her best friend. Magnolia snorted, shaking her head and glancing around the room. “Probably nobody, it’s real rare anyone has an interest in me.”

“That beautiful blonde is dancin’ with her brother, so I’m bein’ as scarce as I can be in the meantime.” Luke was an issue Tate wasn’t ready to tackle yet, and this certainly wasn’t the place. “People really givin’ you trouble about that?” He’d never been one to fret too much over showing up somewhere alone, but Tate also didn’t care too much about what anyone in town thought. “She’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen,” he said wistfully as he glanced across the room to steal a glance of her dancing with her brother. “And you’re obviously just a lovely, Mags. I’m sure people have an interest, they just might be intimidated by all the brains you’ve got up in here.” Reaching out to tap his hand to Magnolia’s temple, Tate smiled. “But what about you, who are you interested in?”

“They have a weird mushy texture!” Kenzie laughed, defending her hatred of the fruit as he backed out onto the road again and started driving. She couldn’t help but feel a little warm when Tate’s hand found her thigh and started running up and down it. His fingers were grazing the inside of her leg and Kenzie bit her lip to keep from saying anything that might embarrass her right about now. She loved the way he felt so confident touching her and letting his hands rest all over her body. She wished she was confident like that but she never had been. “I love a good porch swing.” She nodded as her eyes fell on Tate, watching his profile as he drove them towards this unspecified porch swing. “Sounds perfect for a late summer evenin’ with the cutest guy in town.”

“Me too,” he said while casting a glance in her direction. Not many people saw this side of Tate: the relaxing, enjoying the summertime air and having nowhere else to be. Tate didn’t show it to many people, but he was excited to let Kenzie in. Something about her made Tate want to slam his foot down on the pedal and take them away to a place where he could just be Tate and she could just be Kenz. He didn’t want to think about anyone else’s opinions or concerns for tonight. “Cutest guy in town? Well, I appreciate the compliment, Ms. Davenport.”

The look on Tate’s face when she opened the door told Kenzie she’d done a good job and she couldn’t keep the smile off her face at the way he was looking her up and down. He looked like a man dying of dehydration who’d just spotted a cool running river. She spun around slowly at his request, letting his hands move her whichever way he wanted to get the whole picture. “I figured we could start with your gift and then I’ve got dinner waitin’ in the kitchen and some cake to finish the night off.” She turned to face him and slipped her hands around his neck, getting up on her tip toes to press her lips to his gently. “Unless you’re hungry…I can wait I guess but I thought you might be pretty eager to unwrap me.” 

Kenzie had never been all that good at being sexy or seductive in any way but all the build up with Tate was driving her crazy. The fooling around in the car when he’d drop her off at home after a date and the late night phone calls when he just needed to hear her voice as he handled his own business enough to make her needy. She nipped at his bottom lip with another kiss and then looked up at him expectantly. “I’m ready…”

“Uh uh, not hungry” he said with a quick shake of his head when she mentioned him being hungry. Tate could barely form words as he looked down at Kenzie. His entire body was already miles ahead, thinking about what would be happening in a few moments, and he was eager to catch up. Tate wasted no time in pressing his lips back against hers as he sighed into the kiss, the tightness in his jeans growing already. Without another moment going to waste, Tate lifted Kenzie up by her waist and moved the short distance toward the wall, holding back on the amount of force he used only slightly. He wasn’t one to hold back often, but he didn’t want Kenzie to run for the hills yet, and there was a lot of time for them to unleash their inner desires later. Right now, all he could think about was the way her body felt underneath his hands, one of which slipped up and cupped her breast before he gave it a soft squeeze.

“It’s not a matter of me not knowing how to flirt,” he would be able to say many charming things if it wasn’t for the fact that he was so shy. He thought about them, every time he was attracted to someone, he had many smooth thoughts, but the problem was making them come out of his mouth, “I’m afraid that not even the smoothest person would manage to train me,” he was a little less shy than he was when he was younger, because his therapy was helping, but clearly, there was a lot of it left, and a lot to work on yet.

“Ahh, so you can flirt,” Tate said, looking Amelio over as though he were taking in a new man. “Why do you think that? What makes you think you’re not smooth?” Tate raked his fingers through his hair. “I’m not even goin’ to address the fact that you’re doubtin’ the Tate Mitchum’s skills here, pal. That’s a bold move.”

Kenzie watched as Tate hustled into the ice cream shop, her ears still ringing from the way he’d called her baby like it was her name. She couldn’t help the smile on her lips, mind racing at how easy it had been for him to say that to her. No one ever made her feel quite like this before, not even her ex-boyfriend who had given her all sorts of little pet names like that. Tate was quick inside the shop and when he came back to the car she smiled, taking the ice cream graciously. “Thank you, you’re the best, T.” She snatched the cherry off the top and popped it in her mouth before giggling and taking his own from his hand. “You can trust me, I don’t even like bananas.” Kenzie announced, setting both cups of ice cream on her lap. “Now where are we goin’ to enjoy these?”

Tate had shifted the truck into reverse and was nearly out of the parking spot when he jerked his head from looking behind the truck to Kenzie’s face, eyes filled with surprise. “Don’t even like bananas? The hell kind of statement is that? Bananas make everythin’ taste better, you goofball.” He winked at her as he said it before returning his gaze to pull from the parking spot. “I’ve got an idea in mind,” he said as he steered the truck down the road. Instead of keeping both hands on the wheel like he’d pretended he would do, Tate immediately slipped his free hand onto Kenzie’s thigh, moving it back and forth a little before he gave it a squeeze as it settled into place. “How do you feel about porch swings? I know, I know, most people put ‘em on the front porch and that’s not the kind of privacy you’re thinkin’, but I happen to know a spot where there’s on on the back porch, too, along with a nice big fence and a cute little garden.”

Billie showing up at his office had been a surprise, but one he appreciated more than anything. He was mostly joking when he told her to bring him lunch from the town’s famous bbq joint. “Bills, I’m tellin’ you,” he said as he licked the barbecue sauce off his fingers and looked up at his best friend. “There’s this extra level of stress that comes with football season. I’ve been eatin’ three times as much as usual, and you of all people know how much I eat most days. I’m runnin’ all the time and lifting weights but I’m still expecting to gain weight. I feel like this must be what it’s like to take steroids or somethin’, minus all that rage. I’m not angry, exactly, but there’s a good reason my attitude is so chipper.”

It had been a long time since Kenzie had been anyone’s girlfriend, and if she was being technical, she still wasn’t Tate’s girlfriend, but she felt like they were together and she wanted to do something special for him for his birthday. She wasn’t sure how long he was going to want to keep doing what they were doing but after the Belle Ball she’d been hoping he’d want to make things official with her. But Tate Mitchum was not like other men she’d dated and so Kenzie was trying to be patient. 

Kenzie had been planning this night for a few weeks now. She’d gone shopping in preparation, buying something special to put on just for him, along with ingredients to make him dinner and a chocolate birthday cake. As she got confirmation that he was on his way, Kenzie scurried into her room and changed into her lacy little number, padding into her bathroom to make sure she looked okay. Hair slightly tousled and undone, just enough makeup to help her feel confident, and the red lacy outfit she’d purchased a few days ago. She heard the knock on her front door and made her way out there, looking through the peep hole to make sure it was Tate before opening the door.

“Happy birthday, baby.”

As soon as the door opened, Tate’s heart nearly flew right out of his chest. He had no idea what Kenz had planned for his birthday, and Tate was beyond simply turned on at the sight of her in the lingerie. Everything about the woman in front of him was perfection: her body, her hair, her barely there makeup. More than that, though, she was winning over his heart with who she was inside, something Tate honestly didn’t think could be done. Mackenzie Davenport was making Tate Mitchum fall in love, and he didn’t mind it one bit. 

The fact that they hadn’t slept together yet was killing him. Not that he needed to have sex to survive, but Tate wanted to show Kenzie how he felt about her in the best way he knew how, and that included sex. He’d been respecting her every time she drew a line for him, going right up to it but never beyond it, and it seemed like tonight he’d finally get to go all the way with her. His mouth had fallen open at the sight of her at the door and stayed there for a moment before he forced it shut, swallowing audibly as he tried to find words. It seemed like his body was already steps ahead of his brain and his mouth, hands reaching out to take her waist as he stepped inside. Using his foot to kick the door shut, Tate held Kenzie at a distance, looking her over as he licked his lips hungrily. “Happy birthday to me, indeed,” he said, voice already low and filled with lust. Spinning Kenzie around slowly, Tate’s head leaned to one side as he took in the view from behind, a single finger dipping underneath the edges of the lace she was wearing. “How long do I have to wait to unwrap my present?” he asked as he brought her back to facing him.

“So ,” she knew she wouldn’t be able to last long before mentioning it but she didn’t think that she would have brought it up this soon. But, that familiar nickname caused her to stiffen a little in response. “Yeah, though I see you’re still getting your fill of Davenport.” she replied finally, arching an eyebrow delicately. “I have cousins too if that’s who you’re going for next, maybe Luke though he doesn’t swing that way but hey…worth a try right? Or my Mom, I’m sure that will go down well.”

Tate rolled his eyes, fulling expecting this kind of thing from Maddie. After all, they’d hooked up. It wasn’t like that’d just go away now that he was dating Kenzie. “Hey now, bringin’ up your mom is a low blow. Not that I wouldn’t, ‘cause everyone knows Mrs. Davenport’s got a rockin’ bod, but come on.” Tate took a deep breath in, slipping his hands into his front pockets. “Let it all out, Mads, I’m a big boy. I can take it. I’d rather you throw darts at me than at Kenz anyway.”

“Trust me, I don’t flirt, because I know if I did, would be awful,” he tried before, more than once, and he was still trying to understand how he was able to get their number, maybe they thought it was endering, which was something that he also didn’t get, “Smooth and Amelio never go in the same sentence, clumsy or not, I’m never gonna be smooth,” maybe if he got rid of his shy personality, he had a chance, but he wouldn’t put his hopes up, as he thought that the possibility was too small.

“You don’t flirt? Like, at all?” Tate’s eyebrows furrowed together slightly as he took those words in. “Dude, you’re way too attractive not to flirt. Like, you should be gettin’ laid left and right, bud.” He shook his head at Amelio’s words. “No, no, it’s a mindset. You can be whatever you want to be. Three fourths of bein’ smooth is in your head.” Tate reached up and tapped Amelio’s temple before resting his hand on the man’s shoulder. “Do I need to train you?”

Tate and Kenzie were a hard thing for Luke to wrap his mind around. The other guy had once been his best friend, but their falling out had been the least bit pretty. But that was also years ago, and Luke was a different person than he was as a teenager. Which stood to reason that maybe Tate was too… Even if the man’s reputation argued against that. So, when Luke spotted him at the bar he decided to be the adult and slide into the empty stool next to the other. “Guess we should stop bein’ strangers since you’re datin’ another one of my sisters.”

Luke Davenport was probably the one person in Madison that Tate was genuinely worried about running into these days. After things went south between them, Tate hadn’t exactly been on the best of terms with Luke, not that he could blame him. It was a lot easier to just avoid the man than to face him over and over again. Now, though, he knew the time would come eventually. He just didn’t think it’d be today. Tate nearly spit out the beer he’d just taken a sip of, forcing himself to swallow it as he turned his shoulders a little more toward Luke. “Yeah, I reckon you’re right. I know Kenz would want that, and I really do want to do right by her.”

“If there’s one way to get me to do anythin’ you want it’s by promisin’ me dessert.” Kenzie laughed softly, looking over at him in the moonlight and trying to wrap her head around how she’d ended up with someone so dang gorgeous. He knew what he looked like, and so did every woman in this town, and Kenzie loved his confidence. She’d always liked that about him, even when it bordered on cockiness she’d found his attitude so attractive. Most girls, like her friend Chesney, found it to be a little piggish and they turned their noses up at it but Kenzie found herself drawn to him, magnetized. “Someday.” She repeated softly. “I like the strawberry cheesecake flavor in a waffle cone bowl with sprinkles please.” She leaned over to press her lips to his cheek and finally let go of his hand. “You’re the best.”

“Good to know, I’m makin’ a note of that,” he said. Tate’s heart nearly beat out of his chest when she laughed. He’d do just about anything to hear her do that again, and that was exactly what he planned to do tonight. As much as he could make her smile, make her laugh, Tate wanted to do it. “Strawberry cheesecake in a waffle cone with sprinkles, got it.” Tate wanted to stay in the truck, wanted to keep his lips pressed against hers all night, but he knew she’d send him in after the ice cream soon enough. “Be right back, baby,” he said as he dipped out of the truck, making his way into the ice cream shop. The pep in his step, the way he moved at a pace only just faster than his normal gait, it screamed his excitement for him. 

When he got back in the truck a moment later, Tate held out the waffle cone bowl to Mackenzie. “As you requested, princess. Now, can I trust you to hold mine or am I goin’ to have to drive with one hand again?” He’d drive with one hand either way, only if she held both ice creams, Tate would get to put his hand on her thigh. That was his intention, at least, and he hoped she’d let him. “No stealin’ bites of my banana split flavored cup of goodness.”

She had been avoiding Tate like the plague, since she had heard that Kenzie and Tate had gone to the Ball together. Whilst she wouldn’t deny her sister happiness, she wasn’t entirely sure it could be found with Tate Mitchum of all people. But, she also was fairly prepared to kick the coach’s ass if he hurt her younger sister. Stepping out of the clinic on her lunch break, she wasn’t expecting to run into Tate however, and she sighed inwardly. “Tate. Fancy seeing you here.” she replied as politely as she could muster.

Tate had a history with Kenzie’s sisters. It wasn’t like he’d planned to fall for her, but he had and that meant dealing with her sisters. Particularly, Mads. As soon as he looked up and saw her, Tate froze. His gaze moved up to the sign hanging above her head, cursing himself for getting this close to the veterinary clinic. “Mad Dog,” he said, instantly slipping into the old nickname he’d used for her. It was obnoxiously common for him to use nicknames, even though he’d forced himself to stop calling Kenzie ‘Mack Daddy’ because she apparently hated it. “Long time no see.”

Anyone that knew him, knew how much of a clumsy ass he was. He always woke up with bruises on his legs, because he probably ended up bumping into the wall while he was asleep, another thing about him, was that he moved a lot when he was asleep. He went to sleep while he cuddled his ex fiancee, but rarely he woke up with her in his arms. It was his fault though, as he was the one that moved the most, “I’m still trying to figure out how I did it, I guess my job may be helping me with my reflexes,” sometimes they needed to be fast in their line of work, “I wasn’t trying to make a pass at her, no… I just didn’t see her.”

“Hey, I wouldn’t judge you if you had,” Tate said, shrugging. He didn’t know Amelio well enough to know if the guy was the kind to make a pass, but in this case, it hadn’t mattered. It was clearly a mishap and Tate would continue to tease him for it. It was too fun to let it go without a little joking around. “You should probably keep workin’ on those reflexes, though. I mean, the clumsy guy act definitely works for some ladies, but I’ve always found that being smooth goes over a little better.”
