I am not a particularly techno-optimistic person or a futurist or singularity believer or anything like that, but I think it kinda sucks that a lot of people in reacting to the nebulous threat of “the tech bros” have let themselves be negatively polarized against pretty straightforwardly correct ideas like “bodily autonomy and assistive technology is cool” (that is, fundamentally, the spirit that motivates transhumanism) and “death is scary and tragic.” One of the oldest extant works of human literature is largely about how awful mortality is and how hard it is to come to terms with death; it is in fact an incredibly common sentiment throughout history, and just because some people you know who really suck are also scared of dying doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
#especially pissed and sad about the transhumanism thing tbhhh#wdym a website full of furries and trans people has also become radicalized against the idea#that making whatever modifications to your body you'd like is cool and morally neutral no matter how 'inhuman' those mods make you#wdym the website with the largest community of profoundly disabled people i have seen on mainstream socmed#has also easily fallen prey to radicalization about how modifying your capabilities with external tools is somehow#tainting and corrupting the purity of the human spirit
that’s vastly simplifying transhumanism just to make opponents sound stupid
Maybe people (even disabled people) don’t view our bodies as something you can “upgrade” and treat as just a tool/object, like changing headlights on a car
and what objection do you have to that?
You are more than your brain and CNS, you are your body
You are not a “nerve jellyfish piloting a meat mecha”, you are your body
(most) transhumanists pretend that is not true, that the only difference between a body part and a tool is simply a difference in technology available, that it’s only the ~3 lbs inside your head that matter (perhaps even less than that)
That attitude treats humans as an engineering problem to optimize, nothing more.
A disabled person becomes a broken machine to fix up (or any humans who aren’t caught up with the latest technology, if/when prosthetics strictly exceed human ability)
.
Points worth mentioning but I don’t have enough time to write out fully:
seeing nature and humans as separate and antagonistic
the fact that it will measurably and irreparably increase the gap between rich and poor
the assumption of positivism
the assumption that a “perfect body” is something that can objectively exist and can be achieved (“I promise it won’t turn out racist, I know every other past movement about finding/making better humans turned out to be racist, but this is different because uhhh science”)
idea that a body has only extrinsic value
[note that you can debate and refute these points, but you can’t just brush them aside and blame “tech bros” for other people not immediately following transhumanism]
the existence of other ideas opposing transhumanism is not the thing in question. the argument here is that the fear of "tech bros" (not the "tech bros" themselves) has increased that opposition, not created it entirely
and those objections are, frankly, all worth brushing aside
you are free to define yourself as being your body. what you do not get to do is demand that everyone else define ourselves in the same way. (for the record I'm in the camp that says we can replace the brain too)
there is no line between humans and nature. humans are natural, human activity is natural, humans changing or replacing parts of ourselves if we see a need for it is natural. that practice has already become key to countless people getting the opportunity to live happily - or at all
there is, indeed, no such thing as a universal perfect body. each person's perfect body is the one they personally want, and we all deserve the chance to get as close to that as we can. what we do not deserve is the chance to deny anyone else that freedom
we can recognize people who refuse to accept tattoos as prudish. we can recognize people who refuse to accept organ transplants as dangerous. we can recognize people who refuse to accept gender transition as bigoted. and we can extend all of that to recognize the fundamental flaws behind objections to further advancements in morphological freedom
A particular disabled person becomes a broken machine to fix up the moment that particular disabled person wants to fix their body. If they are happy or content or at peace with their disability there is nothing to be fixed there. But if they want to change it to a different kind of body (im not even going to say better here)
Use WASD to walk around, my little protagonist. Yes, CTRL to crouch, SHIFT to sprint, good girl. Wait, are you fucking rebinding crouch to SHIFT, you little monster? And sprint to CTRL? That’s just how you’re used to? Who said you got to be in charge…

the world is wrong. but with enough willful self-delusion, you can trick yourself into thinking that costco hotdogs or something make life worth living. this is how the stock market works
pretty excrucian thing to say tbh

the government has passed a draconian law that requires all citizens to donate their gold and jewels to a massive fire breathing reptile lest their villages be razed and their princesses taken
because cops are bad you might be tempted to think that organised crime is good. do not do this.
"no parking" zones imply the existence of "designated parking" zones. lol would that be fucked up or what? imagine a space made just for parking... in the middle of a city or something. lmao.

michaels added a feature for a while in sept. 2020 where shoppers could ask questions that would be answered live by other shoppers anonymously. which led to some good michaels interactions.
the conundrum where most swordsmen are going to be right-handed, so your experience will always be skewed towards that assumption even if you're aware left-handed swordsmen exist, combined with the fact that this means left-handed swordsmen ALSO had more experience against right-handed swordsmen, is definitely one of the funnier manifestations of handedness. like yeah, no real way to get around that, it's basically a completely invisible height advantage

However, you will never be able to get a job in any other field.
Do you take the offer?
100% yes!
Probably yes
I'm honestly torn, this is a hard choice
Probably not
Absolutely fucking not

"THIS ISN'T A SEX THING" I exasperatedly yell as my leitmotif and that of my mortal enemy are arranged and mixed to play as a single track during our final climatic duel.
"ON MY MOTHER'S NAME, THIS ISN'T A SEX THING" I desperately howl as my nemesis and I pull off a seamless, perfectly coordinated team attack on a greater threat, with no prior training or practice, our skills and habits mingling and mixing perfectly and naturally due to our dozens of duels with each other, leading to immensely intimate familiarity with each other's martial habits, combat tendencies, and overall skillset.
Really hoping the other party members don't find out about my symbolically fraught combo attack kink.
It fucking astounds me how many people completely understand “being treated like a child is horrible” but never reach the very logical conclusion of “we should not treat children like that”
